Review: 30623 SHAZAM!
Posted by CapnRex101,
Numerous important characters inhabit the DC universe and Shazam is definitely among these acclaimed heroes. 30623 SHAZAM! has elicited significant excitement and the minifigure looks fantastic in official images, replicating essential details from its comic counterpart.
Unfortunately, this exciting polybag has proven scarce, although it remains worthy of comment and comparison with the Comic-Con version.
Minifigure
This rendition of Shazam closely resembles the version from 76120 Batwing and the Riddler Chase, albeit featuring a black hair piece which replaces the hood. His attire appears fairly generic, although it borrows most significantly ftom the New 52 universe where Shazam's distinctive lightning bolt emblem is white. The metallic gold highlights are similarly authentic and I like the textured detail on his upper chest too.
Furthermore, the double-sided head looks perfect. One side seems overwhelmingly confident while the other appears angry, featuring crackling electricity around the eyes. The subtle wrinkle between his eyebrows is another pleasing detail. Shazam wears an elegant cape which is made from soft fabric but this could potentially have been improved with a golden strip along its edge.
LEGO created an an earlier Shazam minifigure for San Diego Comic-Con. This figure was released during 2012 and takes inspiration from the character's original aesthetic, including slicked hair and yellow torso decoration. Both designs are impressive in my opinion but the modern version seems more detailed and his facial expressions convey more personality, as demonstrated below.
Overall
Shazam has enjoyed significant popularity since his introduction and I am quite pleased with the latest rendition of this hero. His attire appears reasonably faithful to the New 52 design but could also depict other incarnations of the character, including that featured in the recent movie. Hopefully this polybag will soon become more widely available as it would be an excellent addition to any DC Super Heroes collection.

How did you come upon this?
How's one supposed to get this again (beyond the aftermarket of course)?
Still annoyed that there were no sets based on the 2019 movie. I'd loved to see a minifig of Dr Sivana, Shazam the wizard, and the rest of Billy Batson's family.
It's a polybag that's a ...minifigure. Where have I seen that before.
(Sorry. Not a real Shazam fan)
Shazam. Also known as Captain Marvel until about 1972 (? Don’t quote me on that).
Didn’t like the film and not really interested enough to hunt one down, but...
How would you get hold of this minifigure? Is it in the shops, free giveaway or at an eye watering price on eBay?
i think thats the question...I havent seen any definitive answer on where he was available.
Release TBD ya'll, read the reviews!
Thanks, I'll be here all week.
Try the veal.
@MonsterFighter: he was known as Captain Marvel right up until the New 52 launched in 2011 (right around the same time Marvel secured the rights to Miracleman, the character's progenitor). Until that time, he'd only been referred to as "Shazam" in animations (wherein DC was unable to use the name "Captain Marvel") and on the cover of the books. Inside, he was always still Captain Marvel. DC just kind of gave up on the whole thing in 2011.
Looks a bit closer to Zachary Levi's Captain Marvel costume. The lightning bolt angles off to one side, while his is in a symmetrical triangle, but the belt is pretty much an exact match, and the hair is a better match than wet look.
The old hairpiece better represents Captain Marvel/Shazam’s traditionally wavy hair.
I’m guessing the polybag is going to be included with a yet-to-be-announced but hinted-at LEGO DC movie.
I want a Captain Marvel figure to add to my Lego Justice League as much as the next guy, but where has this guy been available? Has anyone seen one in the wild?
Spelling mistake with the f in from missing in the sentence: although it borrows significantly *rom
I'm just glad to find out that I can recreate this minifigure simply by collecting the earlier Shazam and Poe Dameron's hairpiece. Luckily I do not collect the bags these minifigs come in.
I purchased the polybag from BrickLink but am not sure whether it will be made widely available at some point. I certainly hope so.
@The Teenage Brickster - I have the Comic-Con Shazam minifigure so might as well use it when the opportunity arises!
@ALFIE22 - Thank you, that has been corrected.
Considering Billy Batson appeared in the new DC Batman Direct to Video Special I expected Shazam to come in that, but instead the pack-in Polybag was The LEGO Batman Movie The Mini Ultimate Batmobile, which makes me wonder if Shazam will be included in an as-of-yet to be announced sequel to that special, since it has a teaser ending which features Billy and potentially will lead into a LEGO Shazam special. But it might become a 2020 release or December release if that happens and they still aim to include it this year.
Is the hairpiece the ONLY difference from the white hood version from the Batman Riddler set?
