Review: 75976 Wrecking Ball

Overwatch features numerous robotic or mech-based characters. 75976 Wrecking Ball appears especially impressive, accurately replicating the unusual round shape of its source material and incorporating superb detail. In that regard, this model seems reminiscent of the brilliant 75973 D.Va & Reinhardt.

Moreover, the modest price of £17.99 or $19.99 feels quite reasonable when compared with past Overwatch sets. The tiny Hammond figure looks fantastic too, maintaining the high standard for these characters that was established earlier this year when the first wave of Overwatch sets became available.

Minifigure

Various distinctive characters from Overwatch have already been produced and Hammond appears particularly interesting. This intelligent hamster was created at the Horizon Lunar Colony and features exceptional detail, comprising three shades of plastic which look remarkably accurate when compared with the original hero. His dark bluish grey harness and backpack are excellent.

The printed decoration is similarly intricate, faithfully replicating Hammond's adorable appearance. In fact, this figure bears some resemblance to animals which appear across the Friends theme! There is no articulation but the scaling appears quite reasonable beside standard minifigures so I am delighted with this rendition of Hammond.

The Completed Model

Hammond exerts an enormous influence on the battlefield, controlling an impressive mech which is protected by sand green armour. Its round shape has been replicated perfectly and the bright colour scheme compares favourably with the source material. Moreover, the designer has provided various interesting pieces which have not appeared in their respective colours before.

This vehicle measures 11cm in height which is slightly smaller than I had anticipated, although that does not detract from its outstanding detail. In fact, this model is oversized beside other Overwatch heroes but I think it looks marvellous on display, particularly since the LEGO renditions of D.Va and Reinhardt, among others, are similarly enlarged to achieve greater accuracy.

Six stickers are placed across the model, including one near the cockpit which refers to Hammond's original designation of Specimen 8. Another sticker surrounds the grappling claw launcher and looks nice when compared with the video game character, although the hook cannot actually fire. However, the yellow 3L Technic axle at its centre is unique and I like the matching handlebars on each side.

Powerful quad cannons are mounted on Wrecking Ball and these make superb use of black Technic pins which form the barrels. The cylindrical magazines also look marvellous but no ammunition belts are included, unfortunately. The mechanical detail beneath these weapons is brilliant though and the articulated legs are lovely, offering extensive motion.

While the majority of decorations are formed using stickers, printed components are included as well. The substantial 8x8 dish connected to the back appears particularly intricate and demonstrates great attention to detail. I think the sand green colour matching could probably have been improved though. Thankfully, the printed 3x6 curved windscreen element located towards the front looks perfect.

Hammond controls the mech from on top, providing an extensive view of his surroundings. The figure slots inside neatly and the simple controls closely resemble those visible during the game. In addition, the black 2x2 curved corner tiles are quite appealing as they have only previously appeared in 41365 Wyldstyle so remain relatively scarce.

Twisting an orange lever below the cockpit will cause Hammond to retreat inside the vehicle. This mechanism seems relatively simple and the function has been integrated nicely, especially since the activation lever could represent engine detailing. After the figure has been lowered, the circular hatch can close over the top.

Wrecking Ball can transform between Quadruped and Roll mode, allowing the character exceptional speed when travelling across the battlefield. That function has been replicated here and the resulting spherical vehicle looks reasonably accurate to the video game. The legs, quad cannons and shoulder armour fold inwards individually while another sand green 4x4 dish is fitted over the grappling claw, as demonstrated below.

The spherical shape is not entirely consistent so Wrecking Ball cannot actually roll smoothly. Nevertheless, the model looks wonderful and I think it would be extremely difficult to smooth its exterior any further so I am satisfied with this design. The folding legs seem notably impressive and the weapons are almost completely concealed behind them.

Furthermore, the magazines slot neatly into the shoulder armour which is ingeniously formed using sand green bonnet components. This connection is effective, exploiting the wheel arches which are ideally positioned to receive the 2x2x2 round bricks. Narrow gaps are visible beneath the magazines but improving upon this design would be impossible without compromising its Quadruped configuration.

Overall

LEGO Overwatch has already produced some wonderful mechs and 75976 Wrecking Ball represents an impressive addition to the range. Its unusual sand green, orange and yellow colour scheme seems faithful to the source material and distinguishes this mech from others which have emerged previously. The rounded structure looks magnificent too and I appreciate the transformation function.

Hammond seems equally appealing. This triple-moulded element is surprisingly elaborate and I love the complimentary printing. Moreover, the price of £17.99 or $19.99 seems reasonable in my opinion, despite the absence of minifigures. I would therefore recommend this set to both Overwatch fans and those who appreciate LEGO mechs.

It is visually spectacular, and an interesting build with some neat functionality. (and the Hamster makes me laugh everytime I pick it up).

I don't know a thing about Overwatch but that looks awesome and I may pick it up in the future. Good photos, too.

Add me to the list of people who have never played the game but bought this set. Couldn't resist picking it up just for Hammond, but the awesome mech is an added bonus, especially for £18!

Not really into this kind of thing, but I appreciate the fold-up function. That said...

"The spherical shape is not entirely consistent so Wrecking Ball cannot actually roll". Watch me. I'll make it roll.

By in France,

Neithrer a fan nor a player of the game or of the sets but as soon as I saw first pictures of this one I knew I liked it. The transformation feature works well, colours are attractive, and this new minifig is so cute and well designed! And IMO this set can stay on its own on display even for one who knows nothing about the theme or video game. Original, colourful, good play value and action features, affordable. A good set. Confirmed by your review, thank you for it this time again.

By in United Kingdom,

Love this. Been looking forward to seeing a review since early pics were released and I’m not disappointed. It’s small size I see as a distinct advantage nowadays as it keeps the price low and therefore makes it an instant, easy impulse purchase.

Well, maybe not instant, say with 20% off in a few weeks, I do have an expensive Star Wars habit to feed!

PS Hammond, I don’t know you, but I need your cheeky chops in my collection!

Another one here who doesn't know the first thing about Overwatch, but I really liked this set. There's something unbelievably nifty about it being a weaponised hamster ball. I love it.

By in Netherlands,

Weird: it contains the 3.2L axle with stud in yellow in stead of dark tan.

Here's hoping the Overwatch Theme continues.

By in United States,

I honestly view Overwatch as nothing but yet another videogame. Yet, this set, as well as the fact that Tracer vs. Widowmaker being on sale at Amazon for $10; is getting really tempting. May end up with two sets for a theme that originally, I cared nothing about.

Looking forward to making a pink version for my girls

By in United States,

I immediately bought this set because it looked neat. I hemmed and hawed and decided to return it. I didn't plan on building it and had no use for the pieces included.

It this review makes it out better than just the box art. But I have money going elsewhere.

By in United States,

I really need to pick up one of these. I don’t play the game, but this is just a fantastic piece of design and color work, plus the hamster looks so cute and cuddly!

This Feels like great value even despite the lack of figs, eager to pick this up soon.

Overwatch's character design is top notch, I've been admiring it from afar but now it's for switch I'll be jumping in.
Been buying the Lego Pre that being announced, now it's coming to a console I have I'm extra pleased with the the decision I made to collect it as I felt a bit silly collecting it having never played the game.

By in United States,

This is a beautiful build with a ton of great details and superb production values, but I'm not interested in giving any money to Activision Blizzard right now.

By in United States,

I really hope we get some fun Overwatch sets in 2020.
