LEGO to sell wooden toys again
Posted by Huw,LEGO is opening a pop-up shop in Covent Garden, London at the beginning of November at which attendees will have the opportunity to "be the first to own the brand new wooden LEGO collectable."
VIPs were invited to an event on the 1st and 2nd of November by email earlier today but the limited number of places available have now all gone.
As far as I can tell 2019 and 2020 are not significant anniversaries of the first LEGO wooden toy, or the iconic wooden duck, so I don't know what it is or why it's being produced now.
Whatever it is, it's either big or made with premium materials, because it'll set you back a cool £109.99...
So, speculate away in the comments.

Could it be something to do with the plant-based plastic?
Who wood spend that much money on a wooden Lego toy?
So it's a "collectable" and not a toy?
No, thanks. I can tell Lego has lost their way when they claim to be selling "collectables" and not toys.
I’m wondering whether it’s something to do with the IKEA connection? I have a slot at 12 o’clock on Nov 1st, so I’ll be one of the first to find out!
A while back I remember hearing something about Lego collaborating with Ikea on something, so I wonder if this is the outcome of that.
Of course it's going to be expensive. Achieving the clutch power with wood isn't cheap!
Whatever this was, the slots were gone very quickly ... I clicked within an hour of the email being received and they were all gone. Mind you I wouldn’t have signed up for a London based event where I had to spend £110 on an unknown item!
Got wood?
Trying to market themselves as a collectible does not mesh with what I'm looking for. I want building blocks, not collectibles/exclusives/limited editions or whatever else they want to spin.
What? £109.99 for a wooden toy!!!?
Over 700 sets produced last year by Lego, one "wooden collectable" and people already say "Lego lost their way" or "I want to build with blocks not buy collectables"...
Are they producing a set in a wooden box, like back in the Glorious Olden Days Of Yore?
Ran out of plastic?
I think the guess of a wooden minifigure is a good shout - compared to statuettes for various media (like superheroes or videogames) £109.99 isn't too bad. I look forward to finding out and then still not buying one, but I am pretty confident Lego aren't making a mistake here.
Giant minifigure, or nothing ??
Tried to book a slot when my email arrived but no slots left. Contacted lego and they said the emails went out in batches, others received theirs an hour earlier. Rather gutted.
Chunk of 2x4 with an Apple logo branded into it?
@StarWarzFan777, probably the same people that would spend $800 on a set of plastic bricks and never build the set.

I speculate that there'll be a lot of unhappy collectors pursuing this exclusive, expensive, rare product.
Maybe, with the wood LEGO toy, it means that they're going back to the basics by dropping all of the licensed products and getting creative again.
It could potentially go along with the weird commercial that they released recently.
IIRC £109.99 is the price once charged for the wooden blue toy box https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?G=60010
The Duck or minifig (as erithromycin suggested) seem like the likely candidates. Since it isn't a particularly evident anniversary, there isn't a clear choice. If they pursue this idea further beyond this single item, I'd love for them to produce the "det bedste er ikke for godt" wooden sign that was in the original Lego workshop. I've recently wanted to make/have one of my own for my Lego room. Definitely a longshot and something only the AFOLs would recognize, but it would be pretty nice.
UCS Star Destroyer stand so you can enter the Brickset competition.
Interesting, most interesting. I'll have to wait and see what it is. 2020 would be the 100th birthday of GKC. That I could see them making a big deal out of.
As for who would spend £110 on a wooden Lego toy? I would, for a vintage piece. £110 isn't going to get you much. Maybe a Ferguson accessory or badly worn wooden animal.
@monkeyby87 EXACTLY! I have a friend whose dad bought (or is going to buy, I don't know if he did or not) TWO of the new ISDs with the purpose o building one and keeping the other in the box. WHY?? If you want to keep the box intact, use a pocketknife to slice the tape and then store it somewhere safe. Don't buy the set just to never open it. That's not the point.
On Lego Ideas "Wooden Toys" is actually a valid product category on the list of IPs.
I wonder if this is the reason LEGO legal has been targeting the 3-D printing community with takedown notices. There has been several artists who were making large wooden or plastic minifigs. LEGO may themselves want to get into that market?
Given their history, I hope they insurance against factory fires. Isn’t that why they stopped producing them in the first place? Was it Kjeld or Godtfred Kirk Christiansen who started one of the fires accidentally?
Love wood, so if it looks nice, day 1 purchase for me.
My son and I often buy duplicates for various reasons. Sometime like Voltron so we will have each figure in stand alone mode as well as a combined mode one. Some sets we believe will eventually go up in price so we have one to build as well as one for the future to possibly sell someday.
And I don't mean a quick flip, rather keeping for 10 or so years.
The "point" is whatever that person decides it is.
We both Love building, but my son is way more into free building than building sets. As a result we have literally several hundred sets that we have not built, or will not build anytime soon.
Some sets we actually like the looks better in the boxes than in built form. Like the Brickheadz.
Also buying a set now for a few hundred dollars and storing is much preferable to buying it several years later when we have the time to build it but it has gone up so much in price.
And there is no way in the world we could actually display them if all made. The space it would take up is just silly.
Hopefully someday we will have our man cave with the room to set up our Lego museum.
So while I believe Legos are meant to be played with, there are many reasons why one would buy sets and not open them anytime soon, or even at all.
The Lego abides.
I knew Lego's plastic construction bricks would just be a passing fad.
If they re-released some of the vehicles, or the duck for say $30 or so, I'd be game for one of them. But 110 quid?! And my folks thought that Brio and Thomas and Friends was expensive when I was into it as a kid! This is definitely one of LEGO's dumbest decisions. If I spend $120 on a set (which I did once, on a Technic excavator that really confused me), and I don't build it, I still have the parts to do what I want with it. With this, it's just an overpriced bauble.
Hope it's sustainable wood
The Japanese company Mokulock has been making wood Lego-compatible bricks for a while now - they’re pricey, and shapes are limited but they feel great and it’s to test your building skills with a limited selection (sort of like with Kapla - one shape, many colours).
Medicom also makes wooden version of its plastic Be @rbricks , and they look and feel really nice, but are extremely hard to find and stupidly expensive.
I don’t mind Lego joining the trend myself, but hopefully the sise matches the price (maybe a jumbo-sized minifig?).
However cool a wooden LEGO is, I am thinking that they are "milking the milk for the milk of it..."
A deluxe wooden Clikits set? Huwbot would bulk-buy!
Again...... SOMEONE in Lego marketing has a bet on, how far can we push these fans/ collectors / completists / mugs. Also its really only available for people near London, surely people from a long way off are not going to pay to travel to London for a chance to be able to pay £110 for an unknown Lego ish Wooden thing? Hopefully it will be bought out by scalpers and no-one will want one so they will be stuck with it. Was this just in the UK ?
Thanks but no... I rather focus on spending me 100 quid on another train set... speaking of which at SmythsToys I just got myself 2 boxes of 60197 and they were under 80 quid each... so head off to there ladies and gents!!! but last January I got even a better deal for the same train set in Belgium from Carrefour. Paid just over 80 euros (70 quid) per box and buying 2 I got a 3rd for FREEEE. Forget Argos lol...
Might be an idea for @Huw to add promotion/discount info and links for major European retailers as often they get some crazy deals as one can learn from the above?
^ @Huw, is it possible for you to add other French retailers on top of the amazon comparison please? I could provide names and websites
^ Given the low number of French users here, I don't think it would be worth my while, to be honest, and unless they have affiliate programmes on which I am accepted, and provide a product feed it's not possible to do anyway.
I don't like that they make such a fuss about it, especially the secrecy.
Why not simply say "We are going to make an exclusive wood giant minifig, it looks like this and will be available worldwide from January 15th for x.xx USD/EUR/GBP/... from these retailers: ..."?
I have really grown weary of fussing about, discussing rumors, love/hate/indifference comments before the thing has even been seen.
I will therefor not say anything about the proposed product until it is officially shown in the flesh.
Is this mystery item made of wood in order to confuse the knock-off manufacturers in china or just ordinary LEGO customers?
What kind of wood will be used - actual pine, oak, juniper... or given the secrecy - small green plastic cypress trees (fingers crossed)?
And most importantly will it hurt less or more when stepped on at night, compared to regular plastic bricks?
Well this is surprising after the whole save the planet ordeal, maybe it's wood made from trash.
Sounds like an April Fools joke to me.
If it's a collaboration with IKEA, then it's going to be some fancy storage.
@Brickwright , check Etsy. I know of someone who offers just what you're looking for.
Fingers crossed for a wooden minifigure with movable head, arms and legs. <3
It would be cool if it is a giant wooden minifigure, and a standard size Wu like we saw in the Ninjago movie.
My money is on the duck, but a mini mfigure would be cool as well.
Display shelf (wah, wah, waoww).
Regarding price bespoke toy wood castles etc can go for £500 in an example I saw. If this is mass produced... oh god it's not like one of the brown minifigure tools made huge is it? Broom? Club?
Funny, a few years ago 'Space' channel here in Canada (now 'CTV: Sci-Fi' for...reasons:|) one Christmas ran "The Secret World of Lego", and in it, one of the heads (can't remember he was THE head of the company at the time, nor his name...) had a bunch for proto-minifigures in the background on a desk; one of them being the 'Hot Dog Man'. Really hope these are something like that:)
Hope the factory doesn't go up in flames soon... (-:
Anybody have a Friday slot they want to swap for my Saturday 12pm slot?
