LEGO to sell wooden toys again

No, thanks. I can tell Lego has lost their way when they claim to be selling "collectables" and not toys.

I’m wondering whether it’s something to do with the IKEA connection? I have a slot at 12 o’clock on Nov 1st, so I’ll be one of the first to find out!

A while back I remember hearing something about Lego collaborating with Ikea on something, so I wonder if this is the outcome of that.

Of course it's going to be expensive. Achieving the clutch power with wood isn't cheap!

Trying to market themselves as a collectible does not mesh with what I'm looking for. I want building blocks, not collectibles/exclusives/limited editions or whatever else they want to spin.

Over 700 sets produced last year by Lego, one "wooden collectable" and people already say "Lego lost their way" or "I want to build with blocks not buy collectables"...

Are they producing a set in a wooden box, like back in the Glorious Olden Days Of Yore?

I think the guess of a wooden minifigure is a good shout - compared to statuettes for various media (like superheroes or videogames) £109.99 isn't too bad. I look forward to finding out and then still not buying one, but I am pretty confident Lego aren't making a mistake here.

The Duck or minifig (as erithromycin suggested) seem like the likely candidates. Since it isn't a particularly evident anniversary, there isn't a clear choice. If they pursue this idea further beyond this single item, I'd love for them to produce the "det bedste er ikke for godt" wooden sign that was in the original Lego workshop. I've recently wanted to make/have one of my own for my Lego room. Definitely a longshot and something only the AFOLs would recognize, but it would be pretty nice.

Interesting, most interesting. I'll have to wait and see what it is. 2020 would be the 100th birthday of GKC. That I could see them making a big deal out of.

As for who would spend £110 on a wooden Lego toy? I would, for a vintage piece. £110 isn't going to get you much. Maybe a Ferguson accessory or badly worn wooden animal.

@monkeyby87 EXACTLY! I have a friend whose dad bought (or is going to buy, I don't know if he did or not) TWO of the new ISDs with the purpose o building one and keeping the other in the box. WHY?? If you want to keep the box intact, use a pocketknife to slice the tape and then store it somewhere safe. Don't buy the set just to never open it. That's not the point.

I wonder if this is the reason LEGO legal has been targeting the 3-D printing community with takedown notices. There has been several artists who were making large wooden or plastic minifigs. LEGO may themselves want to get into that market?

Given their history, I hope they insurance against factory fires. Isn’t that why they stopped producing them in the first place? Was it Kjeld or Godtfred Kirk Christiansen who started one of the fires accidentally?

My son and I often buy duplicates for various reasons. Sometime like Voltron so we will have each figure in stand alone mode as well as a combined mode one. Some sets we believe will eventually go up in price so we have one to build as well as one for the future to possibly sell someday.
And I don't mean a quick flip, rather keeping for 10 or so years.
The "point" is whatever that person decides it is.
We both Love building, but my son is way more into free building than building sets. As a result we have literally several hundred sets that we have not built, or will not build anytime soon.
Some sets we actually like the looks better in the boxes than in built form. Like the Brickheadz.
Also buying a set now for a few hundred dollars and storing is much preferable to buying it several years later when we have the time to build it but it has gone up so much in price.
And there is no way in the world we could actually display them if all made. The space it would take up is just silly.
Hopefully someday we will have our man cave with the room to set up our Lego museum.
So while I believe Legos are meant to be played with, there are many reasons why one would buy sets and not open them anytime soon, or even at all.

Again...... SOMEONE in Lego marketing has a bet on, how far can we push these fans/ collectors / completists / mugs. Also its really only available for people near London, surely people from a long way off are not going to pay to travel to London for a chance to be able to pay £110 for an unknown Lego ish Wooden thing? Hopefully it will be bought out by scalpers and no-one will want one so they will be stuck with it. Was this just in the UK ?

I don't like that they make such a fuss about it, especially the secrecy.
Why not simply say "We are going to make an exclusive wood giant minifig, it looks like this and will be available worldwide from January 15th for x.xx USD/EUR/GBP/... from these retailers: ..."?

I have really grown weary of fussing about, discussing rumors, love/hate/indifference comments before the thing has even been seen.

I will therefor not say anything about the proposed product until it is officially shown in the flesh.
