Review: 40385 Trophy

Every so often LEGO releases a new product and you wonder why it hasn't made something like it before given what you'd think is an obvious demand. 40385 Trophy is certainly such a set.

It's a versatile enough to be given to just about any recipient on any occasion. What's more, it gives us our first look at the so-called Kjeld brick...

Its versatility is thanks to the extensive sticker sheet that provides all manner of icons and slogans that can be mixed and matched as needed.

The 2x2 sized ones are for adding to the top of the trophy, while the 2x4s are for the base.

Here's the Kjeld brick. It's been produced for Spike PRIME sets to make it easier to interface System and Technic parts and here it's used in the base to provide a sturdy anchor for the neck of the trophy.

Why is it called a Kjeld brick? I'm not sure if the story I heard was told to me in confidence or not so I won't share it here just yet!

The trophy doesn't take long to assemble, and it's not a bad parts pack. It contains plenty of SNOT bricks including twelve 1x1 bricks with studs on adjacent sides (26604) in three colours, and enough tiles to apply all of the stickers. It's likely that you'll only attach two so they are effectively spare parts.

Here it is, with Mr. Brickset for scale.

It's sturdily built so shouldn't fall apart when raising it above your head on receipt!

I can see this being very popular and it's the sort of product that should be in the assortment all the time, like wedding cake topper minifigs and birthday themed sets.

When released on 1st January it'll be available in brand stores and at LEGO.com for £11.99 / $12.99.

Thanks to LEGO for providing the set for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

A very nice customizable gift at a reasonable price, even if later used as a parts pack.

By in Canada,

I picked up a few of the Kjeld bricks from bricks and pieces. I was really hoping to find out why they were called that.

I'll maybe get two, one to show off and another for parts.

@Huw, pardon my ignorance, but how does one properly pronounce Kjeld?

With the j as the y in "you"

LEGO should make these in grey/silver and brown/bronze as well, so they can be given away as prizes for numbers two and three in any type of contest.

I could imagine a use for a marketplace where we could pick up chromed versions of those yellow parts...

Looks pretty good--though I think at least pearl gold or pearl silver would look good on it. Plated parts in silver and gold would look great, but I am sure LEGO chose yellow to keep the price down.

I can see this as being a quite popular set with schools and the like. Plus, unlike the various awards I've got from grade school my folks won't let me pack away, these are actually more than just a paperweight--it can be rebuilt into whatever one can imagine, since it's Lego.

I could really do with some black 2x2 Kjeld bricks at the moment. I hope they are used in lots more sets in the coming years.

By in Germany,

Oh so that part is new, I was wondering if it existed for a long time and I only recently saw it. The treehouse uses a red one for the trunk's upper structure so that's where I saw it first.
