Review: 40380 Easter Sheep

2020 is the third year that the seasonal sets released for Valentines, Easter and during the main holiday period have been BrickHeadz so it's probably becoming difficult for the designers to come up with new ideas.

We've had an Easter bunny and an Easter chick, and now this year we have an Easter sheep, although I think 'lamb' would have been a more appropriate name.

One interesting aspect of it is that, at 192 pieces, it contains more elements than any other single BrickHeadz set.

That is largely on account of coming with over 80 1x1 round tiles and plates, mostly in white.

It's covered from head-to-toe, back and front with them to make it look woolly and I guess they do a pretty good job.

It's not obvious why the ovine has orange spots on it until you notice the orange-tipped paintbrush in its hand.

However, it's not immediately apparent what it's been painting since there's only one small orange piece, a 2x2 round plate, on the attractive stand.

Still, it's quite cute and I guess the orange adds a splash of much-needed colour.

Another attractive entry to the BrickHeadz series, then, that's available now at LEGO.com for £9.99 / $9.99.

So, bunny, chick, lamb... what will the designers come up with for Easter 2021, I wonder?

Thanks to LEGO for providing the set for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Next Easter - Brickheadz Jebus. Seasonal Brickheadz must come to an end soon - Halloween still have vampire and Frankenstein’s monster, Christmas has a snowman but other than that I’m struggling to think what they can do

Nice review, and I think it looks quite good, but it's definitely not a bovine! ;)

By in United Kingdom,

Surely the orange stripe around the yellow and azur egg explains the paints presence everywhere..?
Sometimes in popular culture the Easter Bunny is depicted as a rabbit but sometimes as a hare so there is always that to exploit next year.
its already out of stock Lego LEGO.com.

By in Belgium,

I always thought bovine meant cattle.

By in Singapore,

I love it. This is much better-looking than 40148 Year of the Sheep. I think I will display it alongside my 41597 BrickHeadz.

As others have said, sheep are not bovines.

Next year we may get vignettes, but that is just my theory.

I think sheep are actually ovine

By in United Kingdom,

This model would be considered ovine, according to the online dictionary “ovine” means relating to, or resembling a sheep. Even a ABS plastic one.

Cute kiss curl, good ears, weird nose. And the sheep’s not bad either.

By in Australia,

I love the curl on his forehead, that's very cute. Not enough to actually put aside my indifference to Brickheadz, but it's still cute.

A chocolate bunny could be great for next year, especially since there will have been 2 years since the last bunny

I think he is adorable. My 11 year old said "arrrgh that's terrifying". I am not sure if she has ever met any real sheep though. Poor city - raised child.

By in Canada,

Nice choice of background colour for the pictures, makes me think the sheep is happily enjoying a day in the farm :)

I have a few of the other Brickheadz animals, seems like the style suits them well in most cases. Definitely getting the sheep too.

“orange stripe”

Yep that’s what I thought. It’s unlike Huw to miss out those small details.

Does anyone know whether they are making any other brick-built animals (other than Brickheadz) for Easter, like the 40086 easter bunny set in 2014? Please not one like the chick in 2016!

I hope that 2021 will bring.... come back of seasonal vignettes!

By in United States,

I think this looks great, but honestly, I’m getting tired of these seasonal Brickheadz. Like @parsom suggests, I hope we see the return of seasonal vignettes in the near future

As much as I love this set, I’d be down for vignettes returning. I wanted them so much back in 2017 (I only got the Easter one, though) and I feel like there could be so many possibilities. Maybe a Lunar New Year Set that’s under the $50 mark? Another dating set could work for Valentine’s Day, as long as it’s themed around a new location. Perhaps a small Easter parade for next year? The possibilities go on and on.

Love it. Love it. Love it.

Did I mention that I love it?

Looks like a goat? wow...

Easter sheep? Man, Lego is really running out of ideas...

By in Norway,

Fun fact, this Brickheadz is number 100th. Has a special print for the number on the box.

(if you have time, can you update this review with the picture of the box?)

By in United States,

I'm amazed at it's SHEER brilliance.

By in Denmark,

I hope TLG will go creative next year and expand the traditional range of "easter animals".

I am looking forward to an easter kangaroo, an easter pig, an easter camel, an easter parrot...

Whatever, as long as we get some more Brickheadz.

No, but it most certainly is "ovine" like the article reads.

Good review! I love how soft and curly the sheep's wool looks! As others have said, I think it's pretty clear that the sheep is painting Easter eggs, and the orange paint was used to add the finishing touch to the yellow and blue egg.

@InterstellarPig: I guess one option would be a butterfly. In some Christian traditions and in historical Christian art, the butterfly's life cycle is used as a symbol or allegory for Jesus's death, burial, and resurrection, and from a secular standpoint, they're associated with springtime since in temperate climates, the warmer spring temperatures and blooming spring flowers tend to forecast their arrival. But from what I've seen, bunnies, chicks, and lambs are definitely more typical Easter symbols these days.

@Djhorn's chocolate bunny idea is also cute! After all, even the vignette-style seasonal sets often revisited similar concepts every few years, and I don't remember anybody acting like that meant vignettes had worn out their welcome.

I wouldn't mind if vignettes did return, since it's been enough years at this point that we could probably expect some new ideas or techniques, but I also wouldn't mind more BrickHeadz — I'm sure there are lots more ideas out there designers could dig into.

@Clb204: You say that as if lambs aren't a standard symbol of Easter and springtime? In traditional Judaism, the sacrifice of a lamb or goat was a part of the observance of Passover. Christians subsequently adopted the lamb as a symbol of Jesus's sacrifice and incorporated it into Easter traditions.

From a secular standpoint, lambs are typically born in the springtime, and thus part of the broader association of that season with fertility and rebirth for thousands of years. And then there's the more recent proverb "in like a lion, out like a lamb" which describes winter storms giving way to gentler spring weather during the month of March.

It's certainly no more of a stretch than a bear or puppy for Valentine's Day!

Easter Mickey, maybe?

By in Germany,

Easter elephant?

Honestly, I would so wish for the return of seasonal vignettes. I never liked BrickHeadz to begin with, and by now it really shows that they are running out of ideas. Time to call it a day.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

I agree it should have been called "Lamb", however, I know why LEGO didn't do it.

Calling it "lamb" would obviously report immediately to the Christian concept of the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) which would mean a religious set and that goes against the silly rules.

Easter Ideas: Chocolate bunny, girl bunny, baby bunny siblings, duckling, painted Easter egg with legs cracking out...

I'm also kinda hoping for
- President Day Mount Rushmore presidents, and/or Uncle Sam,
- a leprechaun,
- Christmas polar bear (or is that too Coke-like?),
- Lunar New Year animal-themed animal (ie- 2020 would have been a rat, 2021 would be an ox),
- a groundhog (which can just be re-released with the same model and different kit numbers for hundreds of years),
- a Valentine's cupid,
- birthday cute animals that can have the party accessories removed for everyday display (like a hedgehog, squirrel, and other animals based on the cute things in the Friends series)
