Why on Earth would you pre-order a Lego set?!?
Perhaps fear of missing out?
Even though Lego sets are generally readily available everywhere once officially released.
No matter how much I like a Lego set, and I think these helmets look really nice, this new trend of 'pre-ordering' is beyond me, and not something I personally welcome.

While I agree with the concept I've pre-ordered a couple of sets to capitalize on the free gift with purchases that I might've otherwise missed out on. I wanted the free train but there wasn't really anything that currently captured my interest that I didn't already own so I pre-ordered the mandalorian set to qualify

Pre-ordering helps to stop the absolute pounding the Lego systems take when a popular item goes on sale, and helps them to predict demand. It probably helps reduce the number of disappointed customers too. It also might result in more product being available if there is enough time to ramp up production (or the opposite and stop them over producing an unpopular set)

Usually there is a gift or other incentive, or just knowledge that you will get item among first.

I can understand but I never make preorders, actually I'm more post order person, waiting for deep discounts.

Btw interesting how lego is pushing classical theme, I guess they got tired of sets based on modern movies being in sales bin.

Was unable to get the first 2 due to no release in UK, so no incentive to get these either!

I am loving the Fett helmet but my dad (who is a non SW or LEGO fan but a casual man) loved the Tie Pilot helmet, when this passes I am planning to reward part of what he gave me and my brothers with sacrifice.

@TheBigLegoski :
I preordered the first UCS MF. I was the only person in my LUG who did this, and it netted me a 20% discount on a $500 set, while everyone else was complaining that even $400 was too much. I also got one of the 1st Edition copies, which reportedly sold out in preorders alone. Later on (mostly after seeing how high the resale prices hit once it was discontinued, but also after seeing my copy at two shows and a club meeting), a _lot_ of people in my LUG lamented skipping it.

Besides that preorder, where you got a very tangible benefit, people have a lot of experience with highly desirable sets selling out on day of release, and then having to wait some random number of days before they could finally get an order through.

@kraken:
I mean, they're just going by their normal release schedule, with a few tweaks due to some pandemic raging across the planet. Past experience has shown that they really only have the ability to go off book by a few weeks, and then only for a very limited range of sets.

Last year's Darth Vader and Sith Trooper are rather different: a fair bit smaller, and only half the number of pieces. In addition they are busts, not helmets only.
I have last year's Darth Vader, and will not display it together with these helmets. Let alone consider them all part of the same series.

Eh.

These look like they are more for adults. They don't have any real play features.

I'm skipping these.

(This was a sarcastic post in response to the Mario sets being too aimed at kids.)

By in Germany,

GWPs have so far been the only reason for me to ever pre-order sets.

Thanks, I wasn’t aware of the differences, I just sort of told myself what’s the point. And now I’ll have to buy them all LOL!

Because you want it as soon as possible?
Because you might not be busy and not be able to place an order

Even though you are unlikely to miss out in the grand scheme of things, if you wait to order it, there is no guarantee that it won't be on back order by then.
