The_Rancor waxes lyrical about an exceptional Star Wars set today:

No one will be surprised to know my featured set is a Star Wars set, but the one I’ve chosen is far from my first. I’ve been playing with or collecting Lego Star Wars since 1999 so the latter honour probably belongs to 7128 Speeder Bikes.

As much as I love scout troopers, the set I’ve chosen is younger... and far more powerful. If you were a prequel fan, 2008-9 brought a fantastic range of Clone Wars sets, but none greater than 10195 Republic Dropship with AT-OT Walker. The technical build was excellent, minifigs were plentiful and the vehicles have never been recreated since -- in my eyes a true icon!

In 2008 I was 15, a time quite challenging to prevent myself from going into a Lego dark age. As a hobby it wasn’t something I told many people about and I’d started going out with friends more, spending money on other things, buying less Lego. Fantasy Castle was just about keeping me in there but Star Wars hadn’t been very interesting for a couple of years.

The introduction of the Clone Wars subtheme gave me the much-needed injection of interest I wanted out of Lego Star Wars. Almost everything from the first few waves was excellent (except perhaps The Twilight). But the point that really got me more heavily involved again was the release of 10195 in 2009.

10195 belongs to an exclusive group of Star Wars sets larger than most playsets and Lego Exclusive, but not technically having UCS status, much like 2019’s 75244 Tantive IV. At the time 10195 was my largest single set I’d ever purchased and eliminated my Lego budget for months afterwards. But it was a great combination of System, Technic, large scale and Star Wars and I just had to have it!

It’s relatively rare to find a Star Wars set with two vehicles aligned to the same side, and certainly at this scale. LEGO had already released a Gunship, AT-TE, Fighter Tank and V-19 Torrent in the first Clone Wars wave - so this was the perfect follow-up to complement them. It was even better that this set straddled the lines between Episode II (Dropship at Geonosis), III (AT-OT briefly featured on Felucia) and Clone Wars (multiple times).

Nowadays we’re used to at least one exclusive figure in most sets, particularly larger ones. 10195 did something different and supplied only existing Clones: 2 pilots and 6 troopers. That meant a driver for both vehicles (forgiving inaccuracies) and enough troopers to fill a lot of the seats in the AT-OT. Clone Wars sets get a bad rap for their stylised faces designed to match the nature of the animation but in this you didn’t have to see them because they were all behind helmets. Anyway, though the numbers were nice, the minifigs themselves weren’t a deciding factor at all in my purchase. It was all about the vehicles.

The Dropship or LAAT/c is configured, as you might expect, closely to 7676’s Gunship (LAAT/i) design, but extends the length and wingspan accordingly to suit the intended load with a technic core for strengthening the central beam. Only one cockpit is used to pilot the vehicle but there are also some more hangar bay doors customisable using stickers like 7676 - here either a clone arm ripping off a Clanker head or a fearsome Wampa - I went for the Wampa as it felt more like a fighter plane of old. The mix of white and dark blue colour plating finishes it off nicely.

The AT-OT also borrows some construction methods from its similar namesake the AT-TE, with 8 ‘dangling’ loose walker legs and a similar chassis. The All Terrain Open Transport however provides rows of seats for the clones to sit on with a prominent printed cockpit area. Nowadays with different pieces and jumper plates Lego could probably fit a couple more seats in but 16 is more than enough for a small detachment, with turret holes and a loading ramp for maximum playability.

I’ve always thought the biggest USP of 10195 is the carrying function which not only carries the AT-OT but is also been designed to carry 7675 AT-TE Walker. A catch on a Technic assembly can easily be released whilst holding the Dropship that picks up whichever walker you like with surprising strength, cradling it with circular dishes on either side quite accurately depicting the magnetic clamps. The AT-TE doesn’t need changing but the AT-OT has a specially folding cockpit to fit into the space. Carrying around a Dropship with a walker attached beneath is enormous, heavy and not recommended over a long distance, but you feel like you can launch an assault all by yourself — swooshability on steroids if you like!

If you want this set nowadays, be prepared to pay big money. It originally cost £180/$250 but adjusted for inflation, that’s about £240/$300 in today’s money which would be a higher expense UCS or MBS set. You’ll be lucky to nab a complete used 10195 for less than £400 on the secondary market - but a modern classic this good demands a price to match its status.

Man, I still want this set, but it is has been so long and The Clone Wars has only grown in popularity that it is far beyond my current expense level to get. I was a college student in 2009 just coming into adult money as I worked summer jobs. I kept putting this one off because $250 was still a lot of money and because I was using a lot of the Lego budget into plying eBay for sealed sets I missed out on from my childhood in the 1990s. But sadly, by the time I graduated college and had a regular paycheck, this one was EOL'd and gone from shelves.

You were smart to get this when it came out. Although reviews I've read indicate its not perfect (the exit ramp on the AT-OT doesn't extend far enough to reach the ground and there are no controls for the pilots in the Dropship and AT-OT, for example), it is a worthy set that exemplifies how Lego Star Wars was reborn to newer, greater heights in 2008 to 2010.

Did Lego forget to photoshop out the stand holding the handle in the next to last photo? I just noticed a metal bar resting there with a dinged up plastic top that wasn't a Lego piece in the photo.

By in Germany,

From a time when TLG released so many great sets, especially Star Wars and Technic, not to mention classic Modulars, that it's truly eye-watering.

This set was so awesome, too bad I've never been able to pick it up. This is one we definitely need a rerelease of at some point.

Fyi, the Gunship can also carry the Juggernaut from the same period. Works fine. Try if you can..

This is a set that really needs a remake. Maybe with a UT-AT this time?

Great Set!!!!

By in United Kingdom,

I honestly have to say this is set is so OVERRATED. The build is hideous. I do not see what people see in this set at all. Then again as someone who can live without Star Wars I guess my opinion will be overlook by many.

And then when I see these price on eBay I wish I had one just to sell, upwards of £800.

Is this the biggest non UCS SW set?

By in United Kingdom,

I was so happy when I got this set. Both walker and dropship feel so solid, which is great for armoured vehicles especially when the dropship is as elongated as it is. And its great that the walker can carry so many troops into battle when Lego has a habit of only fitting its transports for a few minifigs at a time

^ 75244 Tantive IV (2019) has 10 more pieces: 1768 vs 1758.

This was also my brother and I's first big purchase! Still have it in one piece. Or should it be two pieces?

Did I mention this set has flick fire missiles too? Albeit with multi-launch ;)

Unpopular opinion: I think this set is overrated!

I don’t know, I think it was with a lot of the early Clone Wars sets. I own the AT-TE and really want the Magnaguard fighter, but the rest aren’t really my ‘thing’. Oh well...

By in Germany,

I'd buy a LAAT + AT-TE any time of the day over this, and use the spare cash for something else. I think this set's most value is nostalgia. (BTW, AT-TE isn't overly exciting either, but at least is a solid parts pack and is moddable).

And yes, there is a piece of shiny metal in the 2nd to last photo, holding the handle :)

Why why why has this never been re released or remade?!?!?! Screw the constant snow speeders and land speeders and give us this please Lego! :)

It would have been better had the helmets been phase II on them but I will take what I can.

"Swooshability on steroids" indeed!

This is the second time in a week an old set has been featured on Brickset the very same day as I build it. I will be conducting a spy cam sweep of my residence presently O_O

Hi! Excellent article! That is an amazing set, unique and the design is pretty accurate. What do you think about twilight? is another great set for me.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

It's a pretty amazing set for sure. The true troop capability of it. Especially now that Clone Wars season7 is over, you can see the Republic drop + AT-OT in a few scenes when they start laying siege to Mandalore. Totally worth it's original purchase price for sure. A quick check of eBay right now shows the highest listing of $1,375USD for a completely sealed set.

Nothing sinister. Just great minds thinking alike :)

By in Netherlands,

Such a cool set, even if I wasn’t into the prequel Trilogy. If I remember correctly, I should have a MISB 10195 in my storage unit, and a AT-TE to go with it.

The Twilight’s problem was more the source material than TLG’s design. The ship was fairly uninspired, like a clunky B-Wing. It also took the fairly unusual choice in Lego Star Wars ships of no windscreen creating a vacuum problem.

I just rewatched The Clone Wars movie last night and realised hardly any of the vehicles or key scenes have been missed as Lego sets. Maybe a ‘Shield Generator Ambush’ on Christophsis or ‘Ziro’s Hideout’ on Corsuscant wouldn’t go amiss but I doubt they’d have a huge audience. More Rogue One or Solo sets would though!

By in Australia,

This is just like the venator, everybody wants it because there’s no other option, if a new version of this set and a new venator came out the old versions would practically be null and void

At first reading of this review, I wanted this set very much indeed, but after the Jangbricks video, it's a bit more of a "meh".

I couldn't possible display it anywhere, it seems a bit of a faff, and not being able to drop-off the AT-OT using just one hand is a substantial miss.
