Latest changes to the website
Posted by Huw,
This week I've addressed a few user suggestions and also made some significant changes to the set, minifig and parts listings.
The biggest change concerns the minifig and parts listings, which have been brought into line with the set listings in terms of functionality and appearance. Both now have a list view and a gallery view which can be toggled instantaneously. This has enabled the removal of the tags from the gallery view, where they took up too much space and often didn't fit horizontally, to the list view, and the addition of more information to the list view.
For example, on this minifig list, in list view it now links to the sets the minifigs appear in, which can be hovered over for a quick view. The 6-month average sold prices from BrickLink are displayed there, too.
Conversely, on set listings such as this one, links to the minifigs that come in the set are shown (if there are 16 or fewer), which can also be hovered over for a quick view.
The 'preview on link hover' now works on all set, minifig and parts links throughout the site, except in a few places where content is loaded after the main page load. I've also sorted out the issue with them appearing too quickly and not disappearing when you move your mouse away from the link.
I have also made a few other tweaks to the listings and details pages to tidy them up a bit, so as ever if you notice any anomalies or problems, please do let me know.

Ive just noticed I have no idea where the link to the suggestions page is actually located on the site. Ive always just used links in these articles.
Huw, the link to the minifig list has an extraneous comma, and so the "Avatar," category is empty and nothing is listed.
^^ On the home page sidebar.
^ Well spotted, thanks.

Hey guys, you don't want to have Huwbot on the selves as the next approved Ideas project !
@Huw : awesome. Just when I thought the site couldn't get any better, you find more ways to improve it further.
Loving this Huw.
With the 6 month average prices visible I'm wondering, how easy or hard would it be to allow sorting the list by either of the average values?
Oh, nice!
I've personally grown to prefer using Gallery view; but it's definitely handy to be able to switch between both that and the list so easily, especially with all the added info on the list view. And the hover-links being used there is INSANELY useful; thanks so much for all the work you've put into making these new additions! :D

Yes, I don't see why not. Give me a few days...
When viewing the parts of a set from a set page the pictures of the parts are now so large they are all truncated. Zooming in or out makes no difference. If I view them in a table or parts list they appear okay but the default view is now no longer much use.
I'm not seeing that. Can you send a screenshot?

True but you do have to make an account though
Wow, Huw. As always, nice work!

I would but I can't see an option to attach a screen print either here, on the 'get in touch' option or the 'contact form'.

@Huw, I also saw this on mobile, desktop seems fine.

Further to the above & what @Nivst said....... I'm using a desktop PC. The pictures are truncated on Internet Explorer but appear fine on Microsoft Edge. Hope that helps.
Any chance of bringing back just the "Character Name" tag in gallery mode?
Also seeing the image issue on Chrome, text over pictures and other errors along those lines
Was the increased size of pics for parts and minifigs in gallery mode intentional?
I'm not surprised things are not right on IE but I am surprised anyone is still using it!
SOme of the display issues could be due to a cached stylesheet. Press ctrl-F5 to see if that resolves it.

Possibly, if the CSS will allow it!

Yes

Thanks Huw, Screen print sent.
I use Edge increasingly as Microsoft is clearly pushing people in that direction. So its not a big issue & I know how to get around it now.
BTW: Pressing CTRL+F5 just reloads the main set image.
@Bricklunch:
Heh. Using an unsupported browser will increasingly make lots of things not work correctly, as browsers that _are_ supported will continue to evolve, and websites will adopt those changes. Microsoft isn't pushing people to switch to Edge anymore. Now they're pushing people to upgrade from regular Edge to Chrome-based Edge. Anyone still using IE is basically off their radar at this point.
And there's F5 and Ctrl-F5. F5 just refreshes the page, maybe picking up stuff that didn't load properly the first time, maybe loading new content that wasn't there before (mostly comments that have been posted since the last time you loaded/refreshed the page on this site), but I think it's common to just reread any cached files (particularly images, as I recall years ago when download speeds were much slower than today, many sites used to have an image cache page that allowed you to load all the common elements to their website design in one go before you started to surf for content). Ctrl-F5 should force it to download everything from scratch, replacing any cached files with fresh copies. If the page loads slowly enough, this may be very obvious. If it loads quickly, you may not notice the difference.
@PurpleDave - Thanks for the info.
Nice improvement/update to the site! I'd really like to see half star ratings in reviews become a thing.
^ Why are they needed? If presented with 5 options or 10, people would still have trouble deciding, only if there were 10 they'd have twice as many choices to decide between.
I somewhat prefer the old Gallery view for Parts, as then I could see several more parts on-screen at once, which reduced scrolling. That's not a big issue, though. I do notice, however, that the new format seems to render the pop-up views (from clicking on the part images) useless, as now all that information is displayed by default below the part image, which is now by default quite large. I guess my query here is whether it would be reasonable to shrink the images a bit and have the names only appear in the pop-up view (which, I know, is similar to the old appearance). It wouldn't be fully in-line with the set/minifig listings, but given how many more parts there are than sets, maybe a more compact appearance is justifiable, and it would give the pop-up views a use.
I came across a couple issues as well, which you may be aware of already:
One- When searching parts, the part images for the results are right-aligned, not centered.
Two- The punctuation for the part names seems to be missing; E.g., "Brick Cone W 3 2 Shaft" instead of "Brick, Cone, W/ 3.2 Shaft".
Other than that, I like these changes. And this is my first time commenting, so I must say that I've been visiting Brickset for several years now and it is easily my favorite website. Really appreciate all the work you put into it, Huw!
I do like the changes you’ve made on the list of sets pages, but I see a few problems with the actual set pages.
First, the minifigure tab no longer displays how many you own and how many sets the minifigure appears in. It also has made the images so large that you can only fit one across the screen on a phone as opposed to two, this means a lot of scrolling if you are looking at a large set.
The parts tab also has enlarged the images resulting in only one across, and it too is missing the how many sets contain a particular part.
I’ll email you some screenshots.
The parts list for a set no longer works for me. It loads about 4-6 rows then freezes the page.

You make a good point. The popup view for parts probably is superfluous now given the images are larger. They used to 6-across on desktops but are now 5-across, (or 4 across under the tabs) in line with sets and minifigs. The extra width accommodates larger tags, which even now, can sometimes overflow.
The 'images' view provides the most compact appearance. does that meet you needs?

Thanks, I will sort that out.

I've been experimenting with removing some characters to make them easier to read but I'm not yet convinced it's an improvement.

This should be OK now.

Same here. Didn't notice this before, because I used my PC (Firefox browser), where it worked fine, but now on my mobile phone (Android, Chrome browser), the parts page is completely messed up. At first it freezes the page after about six rows of images, but when I scroll up or press the "Top" link, the top of the page now is just as blank/empty as the bottom, and only the middle part of the first couple of rows of images remains visible.
Is that parts pages? In which view? Or parts lists on set detail pages under a tab?
All views are fine on my Galaxy S9/Chrome.
The minifigure link improvements are awesome. Thank you for your continued improvement of the website!

Done -- you can now sort by them, descending.

By 'images' do you mean the knolled view? That one works, though I can't see the Design IDs at a glance there. I'll just switch between the gallery and knolled views depending on what I'm doing.
Per the parts being only 4-across under the tabs, the images seem almost unnecessarily large now (on both desktop and mobile), to me at least. Is there a way to make wrapped tag cells, such that the tags go onto a second line instead of overflowing? Then you could have the parts/minifigs tabs 5 across, thereby reducing the image size a bit, while still being able to see the full tag.
"I've been experimenting with removing some characters to make them easier to read but I'm not yet convinced it's an improvement."
I also don't think it's an improvement, due mainly to the loss of decimals and fractions in names, which makes those names more difficult to read. Also, it makes searching for things like "3.2 Shaft" counterintuitive, since you have to remove the period to get any results. Just my thoughts.
Also, the set details pages for larger sets (like 7965) are running really slowly today. Once I load either the parts or minifigs tabs, switching tabs causes the page to freeze for upwards of 10 seconds before updating to show the correct tab, at which point the same process recurs until the tab's contents fully load. I've not seen this happen before; is this just me?

The part list for for a set details. The one between ‘Minifigs’ and ‘Description’. I’m using safari on an iPad.
Searching for parts is fine although the pictures are weirdly a lot bigger.

I tried it out by opening the set details page for 10246 and then klicked on the "Parts" link. The standard view that opens is the one with the issues. The page loads fine until about the sixth row of images has loaded, then the rest of the page remains blank. When I scroll down I suddenly see some more rows of images much further down the page, but when I scroll back up, everything above those rows remains blank, and even the beginning of the page, which at first displayed normally, is now completely blank. Even a page refresh only leads to the same result as before.
Chrome browser on Honor 8X.
The "Value New" and "Value Used" shortcuts have been very useful to me, pretty much covering the suggestion I made (172), but I noticed this morning that some minifigures don't have these links. For example, on https://brickset.com/minifigs/category-AFOL-Designer-Program, ADP006 has neither of those shortcuts.
The data is saved when the BrickLink APi is read to populate the panel on the minifig detail pages. If the figure is not available there, and none have been sold in the last 6 months, no data will be available.
Ive only just noticed the new views and honestly, they seriously hamper the way I use this site, and the way I design MOCs. I would really appreciate a legacy view as an option, because not being able to view tags, part IDs, etc, unless Im restricted to only having two parts visible on my monitor at once is a serious inconvenience for me, as well as just generally being unnecessary on a desktop site. Or at the very least, please make tags visible when enlarging a part on gallery view, though even that would render the view less functional than it used to be.
I feel like Im crazy for still wanting to use a desktop, in this day and age. This overwhelming push to mobile-ise everything on the internet at severe cost to usability on desktop is so infuriating to me. Its just not necessary to make everything take up so much screen space on desktop like it is on mobile.
Hi Huw, nice little improvements :-)
One thing that I did notice (maybe it's just me):
If I go through to a set listing (eg. https://brickset.com/sets/theme-Space/subtheme-Alien-Conquest), as I hover over each Minifig listed a separate pop-up does appear, as expected.
However if I go through to a minigu listing (eg. https://brickset.com/minifigs/category-Avatar), I can hover over the first set in 'Appears In" and the set thumbnail pops up, however if I hover over the second set, no pop-up appears at all.
