December commences tomorrow so our popular annual Advent Countdown is returning!

Four new Advent Calendars have been produced during 2020 and our articles about the calendars will be spread throughout the day:

  • 9:00am - 41420 Friends Advent Calendar (MeganL)
  • 12:00pm - 60268 City Advent Calendar (MeganL)
  • 2:00pm - 75981 Harry Potter Advent Calendar (CapnRex101)
  • 4:00pm - 75279 Star Wars Advent Calendar (CapnRex101)

Times are GMT/UTC.

The Advent Calendar articles will be spoiler-free as they appear on the homepage so you can safely visit Brickset before opening your own. Alternatively, you can change your news article preferences on your profile page if you would rather not see the Advent Countdown.

December is particularly busy on Brickset and we have plenty of interesting articles coming up within the next few weeks, including plenty of 2021 set reviews!

Crazy hard to find advent calendars this year... guess I waited too long. Same with the elf clubhouse. Kids will be super sad about that one. :-(

I don’t remember who was doing it last year but can we have the Star Wars vs Harry Potter tally again? I really liked seeing the winner for the day.

Oddly you need to buy them early when they are released, so like 2-3 months ago.

Has the team ever considered a daily megapost for all of the advent calendar content so it's compiled in one place?

Counterpoint: Not everyone is interested in all of the calendars.

Brought the Star Wars one and hoping my local supermarket still has the Harry Potter one its had all week and hoping tomorrow they will reduce it. Fingers crossed.

@Matt_Z_ did it. Looking forward to some friendly competition this year! That's the only reason I view the advent articles, because IMO the daily gifts don't need a thorough review and speak for themselves.

I was in a Smyths Toys yesterday picking up an order and I noticed they still had some on the shelves

By in United States,

I’d like to take a moment to thank all of you at Brickset for the tremendous amount of effort and time you put in to this website, especially this time of year. Typically this season is considered a joyful time by many, though for others it can often be a tremendous struggle. This year in particular it may be one of the most difficult to navigate for lots of folks.

For some LEGO fans, having this site and the connective tissue of community that comes along with it, along with the daily December countdown posts, are such a welcome, needed addition to this time of year.

Looking forward to it. As Casey Kasem used to say...on with the countdown! WOOHOO!

There are only three builds in the Star Wars one not listed on the box. Shouldn't they be surprises?

I -love- the "boat does not float" warning by the three and a half Lego bricks representing a ship at the bottom right.

There are pros and cons to this approach but I think the consensus is that because people like to comment on specific models it's easier to do that when they are in separate articles.

Sacrilege warning!.... We bought many Lego advent calendars for our children when they were younger, I must confess that I thought Playmobil's where so much better as they slowly came together thru the month to make a whole coherent Christmas scene....

Will miss Huw's humour this year, but looking forward to these, as always!

I got my first advent calendar last year (Harry Potter) and have the new one ready to open. I wasn't able to open it day by day last December since I was at school and my calendar was at home, but this year I'm really excited to do it the right way (and I'm super excited for those gorgeous Yule Ball minifigures)!

Just opened the first Star Wars today (it’s the 1st in Aus). Pretty good if you ask me... but you’ll all have to wait ;)

@Rusticjohn:
I used to like the SW calendars before 2017, but that's because I like microscale SW craft in general. HP was actually the standout last year, and really did make a cohesive scene (which I didn't really appreciate until a whole week had gone by). This year's HP calendar also looks like it might work well as a scene. If they continue that, I may permanently switch to 2xHP per year (one to build, one to part out), and only buy one DWAC for the pre-Disney models and minifigs.

By in United States,

My 9 year old son just got into Harry Potter and asked for this year’s Advent Calendar, which is pretty neat for his first HP set.

Being that I will be purchasing the LEGO Star Wars Skywalker Saga for PC, I picked up this year’s Star Wars Advent Calendar (my only LEGO SW set - hey, I only have so much $ to go around and Super Heroes have dibs) for the code to unlock a character in the game. Just wondering - I got mine from Target, and it has a peel-away sticker on the box for a code to unlock a Darth Vader in a Christmas sweater that matches his calendar minifigure. Anyone know if it’s an additional character to one that unlocks with the code in the box?

Just checked the Harry Potter 2019 calendar... And exactly like you said, a wonderful coherent Christmas scene with some very nice mini builds.... Happy to be proved wrong, I look forward to the reviews of this years calendars.

I made a mistake - Barnes And Noble in Clifton, NJ was selling both the 2019 and 2020 HP Advent Calendars, and my son favored the 2019 calendar due to the inclusion of six essential characters. I say he chose wisely!

@Rusticjohn:
I mean, if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. HP has very few vehicles, so they can't seed it with a few minifigs and fill in the rest with microscale vehicles (they'd run out before they finished the first calendar). Friends had a similar problem until they landed on the idea of doing ornaments, but their ornaments are fairly generic Christmas fare, aside from making all the girls get one ornament with a character-specific color scheme. Do that with HP, and you'd basically end up with three ornaments for each House, six minifigs, and one super-Christmasy model (like a tree or a hearth).

But a scene, on the other hand... _That_ they can do. There's tons of dinner scenes in the Great Hall, the Yule Ball, Hogsmeade, the Slug Club party, and probably a few more scenes they can work into an Advent Calendar. The only problem is, with FB3 getting pushed back another two years, they might not be able to keep it going for the 8ish years it will probably take to round out the series. Once FB5 is released, I wouldn't be surprised if they shelve the IP again. Maybe. Depends on how long a nostalgia wave the Millennials can surf, I guess.

I think this is a great idea, not only would the front page be cleaner but I'd love to see a "which calendar had the best gift today" poll.

I must admit I've never bought or cared for the advent calendars, the builds are just too minimal to be interesting. The "24-in-1 Christmas build-up" sets (40222 and 40253) were nice as a source for free parts, but I wouldn't pay actual money for this stuff.

@MutoidMan:
Last year I bought one copy of the calendar on early clearance, but I think it was two weeks into December (I remember something about building three models every day to finish it on time, and thinking it was a curious coincidence that I never assembled two minifigs on the same day). Then I got an idea (which I still haven't done anything with, due to the pandemic), and I bought another ten copies on even deeper clearance. I worked a really nice deal with another member of my LUG for the six characters from nine of the sets, and kept the rest of the parts. Since the main thing I was after was the pile of trees you could build with ten copies, unloading all those minifigs worked out pretty good.

This year looks like it will make a nice scene, but won't be as useful for my plans, so I only bought two copies (both discounted at Walmart). I'll build one copy next month, and harvest whatever parts and minifigs I can use from the second copy.

Morning here now in The Netherlands, I opened it too. Good one, and pretty expected if you look at the past year. Seeing the instruction, I actually thought it was something different.

Where the heck is this mythical store, it feels like I’ve trawled everywhere in the north west for the last 3-4 weeks on the hunt for them!!

They post spoiler-free teasers on the front page. You can read the site without seeing any spoilers, but you can also start discussing them on the same day. If you pushed it to the next day, you'd be guaranteed to get spoilery comments referring to the model people were opening on that day.
