Random set of the day: Tri-Star Voyager
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6846 Tri-Star Voyager, released in 1984. It's one of 9 Space sets produced that year. It contains 69 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$4.45.
It's owned by 2492 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.
Help me come to life! If you like the set I've chosen for you today, please pledge your support for me on LEGO Ideas so I have a chance of becoming an official LEGO set!

No better theme to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of RSOTD!
Classic Space!

Wait, that means it’s less efficient. Never mind ;D"
Less efficient... or more powerful?
Nice one Huwbot.

Yeah, but how much fuel is in a star, let alone three? You could probably waste a lot of energy and still be fine.
It's certainly an ungainly-looking space ship.
Interestingly, the first set for RSOTD was also a Classic Space set.
Even weirder, they are both from 1984!

“Yo, dawg! I heard you like stars...”
Wish there were red spaceman rereleased these days.
Woo!!! Classic Space!
Now, look, I love spaceships as much as the next person -they're a big part of my collection- but, seriously, just what is that supposed to be?
I didn't know the term 'parts-pack' in the '80s, but that's what this would have been used as!
I loved this set as a kid. Good companion to the very first Random Set of the Day. 1984 was the first year with piece 4596 Plate Special 1 x 2 with Long Stud Receptacle. And this set has SEVEN of them, five in blue.
I have very fond memories of this set. The two white space wing parts are on hinges and fold down. Once this is done, the smaller, single-engine carriage can be removed to act as an even smaller scout ship. Even a 70 piece set had imaginative play features back in 1984.
More comments than likes? On a Classic Spaceship??
Is it because red looks sus?
I pieced this set together on Bricklink a couple years ago for a few bucks minus the minifigure. I have to say, this is one of the, if not the, best small ship in Classic Space. This is like the equivalent of a Classic Space microfighter, they took a large ship design, and scaled it down without losing any of the details. Plus it can open up and launch a smaller ship as well, I don’t know if any other Classic Space set that can do this (a few larger ones can be divided into front and back).
Everyone who loves Classic Space should try to piece one of these together on Bricklink, you will be very pleased you did!
Its a nice spaceship to escape to instead of BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU!
I wonder if it could use anymore of those trailer hitch pieces....
This set shows how more imaginative Lego designers were back then.
New play features mostly suck.
So much heft!
Now that's how you start your fourth year! Huwbot, my bot!
SPACE
I used to imagine that basically everything on this ship shot lasers.
After 7 years all that has changed is blue is the new grey!
I didn't have this one back in the day but I had the larger 6928 collector vehicle and of course the large base 6971. What an awesome set that was. Nothing modern comes close.
Classic space! Always a welcome sight.
I do understand some of the comments, like I would have the cockpit more sunken in if this was modern build.
But it's not a modern build is it?
You're looking at the first builds of a series that brought a lot of joy to people.

The reason the cockpit is so elevated is that it is the top of a small sub-assembly containing a hollow area that allows it to slide over a docking protrusion on the main ship (this is subsequently locked into place by raising the white space wing pieces on hinges). This allows the set to contain a small scout/escape pod that can separate from the main ship, which greatly improves playability.
However, I agree that this function results in the seat looking too elevated on the mothership and a bit ungainly by itself as a scout, although one could view the structure as landing pads on legs. I do like the headlight assembly at the front of the mothership and the side-mounted laser-rockets.
I didn't have this set as a kid but my friend did. Both of us were really into the "ship within a ship" sets so this was a favorite of mine, at the time the set I most wanted that I didn't have.

Thanks for explaining. :-)

It's rigged . . .
Here's a nice example of something that was discussed on a previous thread - namely, that "Classic Space" is not exclusively or even predominantly reliant on the blue/grey/yellow color scheme that is most often associated with the theme these days.
This set is an example of new molds ruining functionality. Later production runs of this set came with part 4081 with thick ring instead of thin ring. This means that the white wings on the back could not be moved up to secure the small scout ship.
Mid sized Space sets aren't as good as small or large Space sets but are still lots of fun!
Why is it that I, one of the BIONICLE lore guys, always miss Bonks on set of the day. It feels like whenever I decide "ah, I can skip two or three" we get one...
Ya know, Huw would it be possible to set up an email or phone text system to inform Brickset users when a RSotD that might interest them is picked? I'd love to discuss all the Space, BIONICLE, Power Miners, and Ninjago stuff that gets picked but it feels like I tend to miss out on them when I get bored of Town or Trains sets showing up and leave the site during slow news weeks. Knowing Brickset there probably already is an option to get notified of articles when they get posted and it's buried in the settings somewhere but I'd love to try it out.

Or perhaps have commenting last more than a single day? I often miss out on sets that I really would like to comment on, sometimes by just an hour or two.
@ForestMenOfEndor:
That was my first thought when I saw this. The most common Classic Space color theme was light-grey, often with trans-green accents. The accepted standard was 2, followed by what would eventually become the Futuron look, and then random miscellaneous stuff like this.
@paulvdb:
Or the white wings wouldn't flip down to release the escape pod. Or you troubleshoot the design and realize that all you had to do to make it work is remove the headlight plates, or find a different place to attach them.

You don't check Brickset every day? Then you only have yourself to blame for missing stuff.

I'll check it every day for a week or two, then get busy with work/have a few days with no news and stop, only to come back and I've missed something massive.
Benny approves! (And so do I!)
