33% off VIDIYO beatboxes at Amazon.co.uk
Posted by Huw,
They were only launched today but already Amazon.co.uk has reduced the price of the six VIDIYO beatboxes to a more realistic price: £11.99, a saving of £6.
I often wonder whether LEGO sets such absurdly high RRPs on products like this knowing full well that they'll be reduced in next to no time by the likes of Amazon.
Anyway, if you fancy a bit of DJ Llama action, shop now »

But are they worth twelve quid? Still not sure...
They set such high prices and get a lot of backlash, just to be undercut in price by Amazon. I feel that in a couple of months we will get to -50%, and that will be a fairer price.
I hope they drop in price on Amazon here, too! These things definitely aren't worth $20 USD.
Marketing ploy... they set the pricepoint much higher than what they’re worth so when they go on sale you think you’re getting a deal and the business still makes money.
The Minifigs look great and I also have an idea for the boxes, but they definatly have to go half price before I am willing to buy them.
Bricking hell, I think we all knew these would be discounted on Amazon in next to no time. But not on day of release.
That was fast
I brought one from Smyths last night, they have priced matched Amazon and would rather support Smyths than Amazon.
Well that didn’t last long. I predict another eight months—maybe nine—before the theme is cancelled for good.
First we're encouraged to take custom away from local toy stores (when they're open) by getting discounts and "free gifts" when buying on-line from LEGO.
Then we're encouraged not even to buy from LEGO but from an on-line retailer with very dodgy work conditions and a record of tax avoidance.
Capitalism really will eat itself.
(none of the new items seem to be on the UK Lego website anyway)
I'm hoping that this set or line might finally knock 70828 Pop-Up Party Bus off the top of the Amazon reductions list as that set seems to be unshiftable & I would appreciate the change.
Remember that the price of these items has to go into the cost of licensing the music from Universal, the cost of developing the app, the cost of maintaining the app and the cost of paying the moderators to make sure everything that gets uploaded is safe as well as the cost of the LEGO itself (which is also expensive because of all the new molds and prints and things)
Lego does this at the expense of other countries which do very lousy sales unlike Europe and usa

This is actually a pretty nice set. I once bought two cheap for resale, but no one was interested at fairly low prices. So I just built one for myself and was positively surprised. Apart from the wheels I think it looks rather cool. There's a good parts selection, and it has interested building techniques and functions.
Apart from that: strange marketing strategies bij LEGO. Architecture, Speed Champions and Technic are also regularly priced way below RRP on Amazon (30 - 50%).
The VIDIYO product line is just going to be a Big Bomb!
If Lego wanted to create a Video Games Division, they should've just done that. As it currently stands, JangBricks noted (My LEGO Vidiyo video: Thoughts, confusion, concern @ 11m44s - Feb 18, 2021) that the VIDIYO app can be played for free on its own, and all its Special Tiles (gaming levels) can be Unlocked by scanning the relevant picture found on the Internet. So now you just have Crazy Expensive Minifigs.
After these Lego Yes Men get fired, I guess the price of all Lego Product lines will increase in the near future to compensate for the loss. Lose for Lego; Lose for Fans!

Except that’s not necessarily for ‘play’ but for collecting. You still need to scan in a minifigure each time to play as that character.
Well, LEGO decided Vidiyo wasn't worth even releasing in my country, so I guess I'll have to pass. I don't really wanna go through the hassle of getting such a small box shipped from overseas.
I just ordered the one with the dabbing minifig, I liked the design. I’ve also got my eye on the cyborg DJ guy, but, despite being cheaper, £12 is a lot of money especially when trying to slowly save up towards the gardens.

An image of the minifigure will suffice, and the official images include a suitable one, e.g. https://images.brickset.com/sets/AdditionalImages/43103-1/43103_alt3.jpg
Jang is right. No purchase necessary.

Not sure if I'm correct, so someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 16 BeatBits as they are called differ in every set. That's what I've been lead to believe anyway looking at reviews the same Beat Box set has different bits in the reviews I've seen, unless I'm not looking properly which is a good possibility XD.
TLG noted in their annual report last year that in Australia the trend has become that lego set are routinely discounted by 30% rather than 20%. This year all the “$30” price point sets are “$33”, and the discounted prices have risen accordingly.
They know what they are doing.

LOL, you really believe they will maintain their app?

I agree, I think the bus is an interesting set with some unusual or interesting pieces & techniques ... Its just that no one seems to want it. I've seen worse sets shift quicker & for less discount. I just want a change in the Amazon list.

In its pricing modelling, LEGO would have assumed a certain period during which the app had to be maintained. The fact that it may not have to because the line doesn’t survive is a different matter. Pricing is set on the basis that a product will succeed, not that it will fail.

If, as seems likely, the ‘Yes Men’ are based in Billund, they probably won’t get fired. Danish law makes dismissal for poor sales so expensive for companies, that most enterprises prefer just to sideline those employees with sinecures.
Just saw these at a toy store priced at 22.99 EUR (blind boxes 5.99 EUR). All the vidiyo stuff had full shelves, probably not a single set had been sold yet.
Will vidiyo be one of those themes L***n and other offknockers won't bother with?
^^^ I’ll also be glad to see something else at the top of the Amazon discount list. Remember when Dimensions occupied a full page, I got so sick of seeing them.
The beatbox parts might be good for a MOC at some point.
I really can’t decide whether to collect these Vidiyo figures, mainly because of all the negativity. Will the figures be collectible in the future... who knows.

There's nothing wrong with the VIDIYO figures themselves; it's the over-inflated price point due to combining it with a poorly thought-out app which obviously isn't Lego's core competency.
Bought the punk robot and dj alien with a 15% discount at Brickshop.nl and they'll probably be it for that entire line(2 good looking minifigs and enough printed tiles should I ever build a music store)
The consumer couldn’t give the tiniest hoot about the costs incurred by the manufacturer in bringing a product to market.
I've just bought the Party Llama from Smyths - the threshold for free postage is only £15 so I just added a series 21 minifig blind bag. I like the tiles a lot but I doubt I'll spend more than a few minutes on the app.
I'll be looking on in envy from the colonies.

"LEGO in the USA does add 20% to the price because they know stores sell them for 20% off all the time.
However, even at 30% off these things are hugely overpriced."
Interesting. In Germany, so I've heard, it is said that LEGO is the toy with the lowest profit margin for stores after the stuff only sells heavily discounted. LEGO does not offer dicounts to stores and gets 100% the demanded price.

Would this apply to freelance consultants, too?
I want all of these sets, but I don't $20 want any of them. Hopefully the US price will go down too sometime soon.
I don't understand how Amazon could claim the money is "off" when they were never sold at the initial price...?
Also, such a discount suggests some pretty huge margins – or are they a loss-leader to get some momentum for the range?

Then watch them do 40% off to offset the price hike lol.

No, but they would not have been the key decision makers. New product concept generation, product pricing, and product greenlighting - while all possibly supported by outsourced services/professionals - would have been ultimately decided upon within LEGO.
The LEGO employees responsible will be fine in the short-to-medium term even after Vidiyo tanks. They may find their advancement in the company at an end and their responsibilities diminished, but unlike hires in the US or UK, they would not find themselves immediately out of a job - at least not until LEGO has a round of widespread redundancies as happened a few years ago.

I bought them all full price at midnight then 5 mins after they went on sale so techinally they did but not really. Quickly cancelled and reordered lol once they went on sale

Now if only they’d actually keep our stores stocked. So many sets selling out day 1 and never coming back, even before the pandemic disrupted the supply chain.
I found these guys out in Australia, today.
$25 for the beat-box sets.
One minifig, and a few tiles.
TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS.
I'm out.
I'd get them on sale.
This really makes me cross! I knew my daughter would want one for her birthday, so I bought on the day of release at Lego.co.uk, which I basically never do for the discount reasons outlined above. I thought Vidyo was totally over priced, but hey-ho, it’s a birthday present for a 7-year-old, shouldn’t be a total Scrooge and I didn’t want to risk missing out by waiting for the Amazon markdown.
Really unimpressed...
It's hilarious to see people thinking LEGO will get ruined or bankrupt just from this theme itself. You should remember that this is just a SINGLE "theme". And I'm pretty sure the cost to get all this designed and produced is minuscule compared to other themes. Don't get me wrong, I'm confident this theme will be a flop like hidden side (at least HS had actual sets), but so far it just seems LEGO is continuing on its experimentation on integrating digital with LEGO. Let's hope LEGO will stop or degrade the intensity of this kind of investment.
