Could you become a LEGO Technic designer?

Posted by ,

LEGO is seeking a new product designer to join the Technic team, after posting the vacancy on the LEGO Careers website earlier this week.

Possible desirable qualities include a particular understanding of LEGO Technic building, given its differences from standard LEGO elements.

You can view further information here. Let us know if you apply!

Well, how about really expensive models with very little in regards to actual mechanical mechanisms, any they do have we can cover up with panels plastered in stickers, all controlled by a locked down app that requires a smart device costing four times as much as the actual set? Do I get the job?

Well it’s a job for the Technic department...
...and Technically you’re 100% right
I’d give you the job!

By in Poland,

In the 80's and 90's - of course I could.
Now - I can't put together some sets with instructions ...

By in United States,

Find room in the budget for whatever jkbrickworks needs and be done with it

By in United Kingdom,

First thing I'd create is K.I.T.T then The A-team Van..

Gravatar
By in United States,

If it were for a system-related theme I might seriously apply. Technic MOCing and me never got along to well so I will pass.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I definitely could not.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

If only I had the portfolio. They will hire me, one day...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Im sure i could put together a set of instructions with mistakes in it and then pretend it was a deliberate design decision when someone else points out the mistake rather than just admitting it & solving it.

By in Australia,

Pass this info onto the Brick Experiment Channel on YouTube.

I wonder if Sariel is going to apply.

By in Italy,

Really tempting, but I know I miss half of the requirements :(

Surprisingly an accurate description of modern Technic...

By in United Kingdom,

Me (having somehow got the job): How about reinstating B-models for large sets?

TLG: You're fired.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Whoever gets the job needs to start making more animals and figures. Mindstorm sets have such limited articulation and we haven't gotten a BIONICLE set in forever.

Heck, just pop in some 10-piece or so identical Matoran builds as pilots for some of the huge models and you've got my money.

By in United States,

Someone get in there and revive Competition, complete with funky colors.

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

I do apply. I just need to finish my portfolio. I wouldn't apply for designer from system bricks but Technic is my all time love.

Gravatar
By in United States,

1) Can't move to Billund.
2) Don't have a portfolio.

Otherwise, this would be my dream job.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm a mechanical engineering student, and I definitely do not consider myself Technic Designer qualified by any means.

Holy shit there are a lot of nasty, snarky comments in here.

I can't imagine why he would. He already collaborate closely with the Technics team, sees some of the projects, gets access, and still can do what he likes, make money from videos and book. He basically has the best of both worlds.

True. But somehow, they are all pretty much justified.

I am a Technic guy and the quality of sets of recent past is declining at an alarming rate for all the reasons mentioned above. Let's just be crystal clear: Technic is NOT Model Team. Yes, it is nice when a model is easily recognizable but not to a point where the 'technical' aspect of it is hidden or inexistent for the sake of cosmetic appeal.

BUT...

We might have a chance to see a revival of Technic in the not too distant future. A few months ago, Lego surveyed its fans about what they would like to see from the Technic line (lengthy discussion available here on Brisckset). If Lego ever listen to what was in that survey according to the posts on Brickset (Lego does not have a good track record of listening to its fans) then we might see some very novel products in a couple of years. Don't keep your hopes and aspirations too high though - Lego does what Lego does...

Can Lego just give us a large creative bin of just Technic pieces already?

I'm curious about who quit... And why.. :)

As it is an EU based job they can't discriminate on the grounds of age so won't have mentioned one.

"Intrigued by functions, mechanisms, how things work and how to combine digital and physical experiences"

Oh no, what are they up to now. Not more digital.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Being someone who is useless at creating anything with Technic without instructions, I've always admired those who can!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The most Technic I can do is Bionicle.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

It’s bad enough building Technic. Stuff designing them.

Gosh, I wonder why that might be...

Gravatar
By in United States,

A Technic build starts from the inside, then to the outer shell. Also I wouldn't want a job that was to disassemble Technic sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sure. I could also become a professional skydive instructor. Neither is likely to end well..

It's kinda weird. I'm mechanically minded, and great with geometry. And yet I don't build Technic almost ever. I did build the sailboat, and want to get the catamaran, but that's about it.

Could also have been fired...or (hard swallow) promoted. I don't like to root for anyone to lose their job, but with the lack of "technic-y" components in the technic line lately...someone should be shown the door, IMO.

Wonder how many eventually applied, in the hundreds is a minimum most likely...for a 1 opening...yeah right....

Could it be the designer of the ill-fated 42113 ???

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of us needs to get in there and advocate for a Powered Up hardware controller.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I haven't tried myself but it may be possible to use the Lego City Powered Up train controllers to run Powered Up Technic motors using the Powered Up app or other 3rd party code?

While they waiting for someone to move to Denmark, why don't they just have a Technic competition on Lego ideas to design original non-car sets falling into either small (<500), medium (<1000) or large (<2000 pieces) sets, or flagship Powered Up set with at least 3 motorized functions? It's been over two years since the last Technic Volvo competition, so I'm sure there are plenty of ideas out there.
