A history of farmyard animals

Posted by ,

Minifig-scale farm animals are among the most coveted and, in some cases, rare LEGO pieces that the company has produced.

The introduction of sheep earlier this year completes the collection of 'classic' farm livestock, so let's remind ourselves of what's available.

Horse (1984)

The horse was first introduced in the Castle sets released during 1984 in black and white, with the brown one following two years later in 6379 Riding Stable.

A foal was produced in 1996 for Paradisa sets 6404 Carriage Ride and 6418 Country Club but has not appeared since.

Horses have come in a variety of different colours and prints, including light grey with dark grey patches in 7189 Mill Village Raid, a set that will be mentioned more than once in this article.

A version with articulated hind legs was produced during 2012 for Lord of the Rings sets including 9472 Attack On Weathertop, enabling them to strike a rearing pose.

Cow (2009)

The cow, design ID 64452, was introduced in 2009 in 10193 Medieval Market Village, which contained two brown ones. 7637 Farm, released later that year, came with two of the black-and-white version.

A cow was last seen in 2014 in 60052 Cargo Train, in a cattle truck, and in total they have appeared in only four sets. At BrickLink you'll therefore need to pay at least $20 to acquire one.

Pig (2010)

Plain nougat-coloured pigs were introduced during 2010, in 7566 Farmer, 7684 Pig Farm & Tractor, and Harry Potter set 4840 The Burrow.

The printed version in the photo below came in 7189 Mill Village Raid a couple of years later, and a brown-spotted example accompanied the farmer in series 16 collectable minifigs.

A pink one was introduced in 2017, in 70357 Knighton Castle, and one with an updated eye print can currently be obtained in the build-a-minifig stations in brand stores.

Prices at BrickLink start at about $1 which makes the pig the cheapest cloven-hoofed farm animal available at the moment.

Goat (2011)

The goat has appeared in just one set, 7189 Mill Village Raid (again!), which contained two of them. It's the most coveted and expensive animal on the list and new examples will set you back around $50 at BrickLink.

Chicken (2011)

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The chicken. The egg was not introduced until 2016!

Like many of the creatures in this list, chickens debuted in 7189 Mill Village Raid, both in white and sand yellow. The white one has appeared in quite a few sets since, including some of this year's, but the sand yellow one has not been seen since 2011. A brick yellow (tan) one was produced for the fox costume girl in series 19 collectable minifigures.

Sheep (2021)

Ten years after its cloven-hooved brethren, the sheep finally made an appearance this year in 10775 Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck's Farm, accompanied by a white chicken and a brick yellow horse.

It's currently available at LEGO Bricks and Pieces (search for element ID 6342625) for a few bucks so now's the time to buy them before they go the way of the goat and skyrocket in price.

Duck (2019)

I don't really think that this duck qualifies as a farm animal, but it's cute nonetheless!

The period 2009 to 2011 was the golden era for System-scale farm animals, when four of them were introduced, and City had a very decent selection of farm sets. However, the release of 10775 Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck's Farm this year with a sheep to go with it gives me hope that we may see more in the future.

If you purchased 7189 Mill Village Raid for $70 in 2011 you'd have two goats, three chickens, a spotted pig and a grey horse with a combined value on the secondary market of several hundred dollars. How many do you have stashed away for a rainy day? How many do you wish you had stashed away?

In the US, sheep sold out on Bricks & Pieces immediately and have not been available since. BrickLinkers and hoarders bought them all out as soon as they were released. Don't know if they will ever be restocked.

I don't like how LEGO has switched to tile-on-brick for animals without a saddle. The groove bothers me far more than the studs.

" [The sheep is] currently available at LEGO Bricks and Pieces (search for element ID 6342625) for a few bucks so now's the time to buy them"
For those who can even buy from B&P anyway. At least in my neck of the woods, there appears to be a reseller who has had a large inventory of them imported and is selling them for a decent price, and I really should get my hands on some, shouldn't I?

By in Canada,

Just a small nitpick, but when you say "A foal was produced in 1996 for Belville sets 6404 Carriage Ride and 6418 Country Club but has not appeared since.", do you mean Paradisa instead of Belville?

By in United Kingdom,

As a fan of moulded animals, I really appreciate this article. Thank you @Huw for it and the pictures!

I have Mill Village Raid which I bought full price from a LEGO store after seeing posts online suggesting it would be worth it. I was sceptical at the time, but that advice has since proven to be right.

Just before the horse with the articulated hind legs was released, LEGO was clearing stock of the fixed-legged horse in white through PAB so I was able to pick up several fairly inexpensively.

I don’t know if we’re allowed to mention rumours, but I believe there’s a foal due out early next year in CMF S22.

I kick myself everyday for not buying MVR before my grey ages. Or two. Of course the only two Kingdoms sets I don't have (7189 and 10223) are the most expensive now...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow. I got my Mill Village Raid when Target clearanced it at 50% off (!); I wish I’d gotten multiples.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was shocked when you said new goats were on BrickLink for only $50, so I rushed over there only to be disappointed.

The cheapest *used* goat sold in the past six months was $48, and the cheapest new one was $60. The cheapest goat currently available is $57, in Germany.

The cheapest goats available for sale in the USA are $103 in used condition, and $140 in new condition!

I'm sooo glad I bought a couple of goats for myself a year or two ago before the prices reached these levels. I have a hunch that @Huw has popularized them even more by including them in some reviews. (And I love it when Huw does that!)

By in Singapore,

Farm animals are so great! I only have the cows for now unfortunately:(

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

The sheep is out of stock at lego.com like 99.9% of the time. Windows of opportunity do exist, but they are rare and short, and then they are gone again. Either way, if you really need it, check back regularly (like multiple times a day). You only need to get lucky once.

Or, if you only want a few of them, I guess it's OK to pay the BrickLink price.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

What about the rabbit? Isn't considered that one a farm animal too?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The sloths are miffed at the exclusion. They feel they're just as cute as ducks.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I bought one 7189 and a few extra animals of BL back in the day. My plan was to buy more sets and I waited for a sale in my local store, but that never happened since they sold out before that :S

Since it has become my favourite set of all time (in retrospect we now know how unique the set is) I wanted one sealed in the box however that one costed me more than 70$ :P

It is definitely about time we get a new farm wave in City, I am sure we would see plenty of farm animals again then..

I agree the rubber duck is no farm animal ;)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

It's great they introduced the sheep this year. I hope they release it in new colors in the future to add variety and make it widely available on several sets as well as Bricks and Pieces.

And yes, one more time, LEGO if you are listening please bring back the goat!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a great article, I really like the backdrop you've added for the photography!

Every year I hope for a return of the farm subtheme, but I guess they're only farming rabbits in Lego City these days.

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

The "LEGO Bricks and Pieces" remains limited to select countries (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Greece, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Russia, most of Asia etc are still excluded), but nevertheless the animals usually remain out-of-stock (of checked ones: CMF animals, tiger, new elephant..., and the sheep as well).

Also as a *future classic I would've included the ostrich from 7570. There are ostrich farms all over the world.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Thanks for the article. Please LEGO, another wave of the Farm/wildlife sub themes. More animals, new animals!

Gravatar
By in United States,

What, no mention of the ostrich? And if you know anything about farms, you know that mice and rats should be included. The rubber ducky is definitely a bath toy, but farms do have bathtubs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I remember seeing and wanting 7189 Mill Village Raid in the Lego catalogue because of the barn and the windmill. I never thought the animals would become so desirable.

I never managed to get that one. However, I did get some of the cheaper Kingdoms sets such as 7187 Escape from the Dragon's Prison and 6918 Blacksmith Attack. That was a great subtheme of Castle. I wish Lego would go back to something similar.

By in Canada,

Love this article! I was fortunate enough to grab some sheep off Bricks and Pieces... as someone mentioned above, if you have access to the service Try, Try, Try! Windows of opportunity do exist, but they are rare and short. I actually just grabbed my first cow off BL this week and am patiently awaiting the arrival! haha

Gravatar
By in Canada,

We need another proper farm theme. Probably just a wave of city sets would cover that for most people, with one big farm set with a barn and whatnot, and some smaller sets in the usual price increase up to the big set: A pickup truck with horse trailer, tractor with hay wagon, different animal "battlepacks" including four of every animal and a small pen with shelter. These could be 20$ to 40$ depending on the size of the animal and obviously size of the enclosure. Im mostly into sci fi and fantasy Lego, but I would certainly be happy with a nice semi realistic farm theme. Last years tractor and this article actually have me pretty excited for some farm sets!

They have been restocked multiple times on BnP. Its just that there are those likely watching the site like a hawk waiting for them to come back into stock as they are wanted (especially at their 1.88 (USD) price), but they do reappear, same with the horse from the same set and from from the Ideas blacksmiths shop.
Also White chickens and Pink pigs have recently appeared in Build a minifigure(BaM) bars in LEGO stores, which has likely dropped the prices a bit for both of those currently on BrickLink.

By in United States,

I've got one of the hinged horses (in brown) as well as several of the old version with the narrower head (the kind that could fit piece 89524 on the head) in black, one cow from the Cargo Train, and a few chickens I think.

You should do dogs next!

I am kind of surprised that the goat is the most expensive.. guess you could say it's the G.O.A.T.... yeah I'll see myself out.

I've always wanted Lego chickens, as chickens and ducks are my favorite farm animals. I guess I've just never been provided the chance to get one. Also, I would like a Lego horse, something else I also do not own. I only own the lioness from 60267 and the deer from 75945.

Interesting article, Huw, as are some of the comments. Would it be possible to do a similar review of Minifig-scale dinosaurs?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I'm predicting a farm theme as part of next year's city waves. My reasoning being that not only do Lego now have a sheep mold, they've also released a couple of farm-themed 'Great Vehicles' (harvester and tractor) in recent waves. Similarly, the African Jungle wave was preceded by the Safari car as a 'Great Vehicle'.

Modern Lego animals are too flat on the side. The elephant is the worst. But to me it's the side and the whole face. I think the nose is too long or something. "

It’s a matter of opinion of course, but I disagree. While I’m OK with rounded animals, I prefer the earlier, stylised aesthetic that emulated toys made of wood including having more flat surfaces and right angles. The BrickForge cow looked more like LEGO than the actual LEGO cow!

(Before someone points out you can give wooden objects rounded edges, I’m aware. It’s just more labour intensive so if you’re making wooden toys by hand in large quantities, they will tend to have flat surfaces.)

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

I remember reading some 2022 set list that included a City horse trailer set for $30. I am not sure if this is confirmed or just a rumour, but it certainly seems plausible. I also don't know whether it is part of a farm subtheme or just a one-off set. After all, there were a few farm-type sets in recent years, like 60287 Tractor or 60223 Harvester Transport, without an actual farm subtheme. We will find out eventually I guess.

Personally, I am excited for a horse trailer set because it should mean saddles become available again. Without a steady supply of saddles, BL prices have been climbing to uncomfortable levels, and at this point, it's not the horses but the saddles that have become a bottleneck for me.

I don't know about in the U.K., but in the U.S.A. it's not uncommon for a farm to have llamas or alpacas.

Disagree, what Lego needs is a system whereby people *can* buy 200 sheep *without* it causing supply problems. Because really the only way to counter these animals getting stupidly high in price is to meet the market demand for them

"Mark Stafford also shared that he originally wanted to include a goat in the T. rex’s stomach as well, but the goat mould LEGO used in the 7189 LEGO Castle Mill Village Raid sets got damaged."

http://thebrickblogger.com/2019/06/lego-jurassic-park-t-rex-rampage-review/

"“We all know the goat is coveted, because of how quick it ran and how limited it was,” Austin explained. “The problem was that, with all the moulds that we have in the company, some of them have to be given up so we can make way for the new moulds. And [we had] such a big drought of not having any place to use a goat, so we’d lost the mould for that.”

By the time the LEGO Group had cause to bring back the goat for 2018’s 21315 Pop-Up Book, the required mould was history. But as Sam Johnson recently tweeted, that didn’t stop the Ideas team from trying.

“We actually went to the Vice President of Design to talk about the goats,” Austin continued. “So we really did try to do the best we can with that, but even we have limitations with what we can and can’t do.”"

https://www.brickfanatics.com/legos-designers-know-the-goat-is-coveted-but-cant-bring-it-back/

Basically it is just a money issue, when the demand is high enough they will be forced to make a new goat. They make new parts all the time, so other than it is expensive it should be no problem. We just need a theme with a need and a budget to bring it back!
Hopefully they will make it in a different color then the original ;)

By in Austria,

I never got why LEGO is so reluctant to produce and thus supply children (and AFOLS, let's face it) with nice farm animals.
I mean, kids love them, adults love them - so nicely designed farming sets, pet zoos, animal clinics should sell really well.

Can it be, that LEGO friends with their "cutesie" animals has ruined the aspects for "city" animals?

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I can't believe it's a money issue for Lego. They produce so many specialized parts nowadays that only appears in a few sets: I'm thinking of CMF, Friends, Ninjago stuff. But a goat seems too much, even though it's something which could be used in a lot of castle, city, Friends, and accessories packs, for many years to come.

Great article, Huw! This just shows how few farm animals have been released in the last 40 years compared to the countless Friends animals with eyeliner. There is still a lack of donkeys, ducks and gees, turkeys, roosters, bucks, oxen, calves and rabbits that didn't escape from the lab. :) I guess you could count the 3 different rodent variants also as farm animals since they usually feed on grains.

There is a funny anecdote to why the old horse model has the wrong leg thickness on the front, right side. One of the Designers spilled the beans during an interview on that story.

Good question, but it should be noted that urban agriculture is a growing trend in cities everywhere! For example, the City of Cincinnati recently made it easier for communities to establish small farming operations on vacant lots.

It also had this very rare brown brick with 1 by 2 brown tile for the brown horse. In that time there wasn't much brown colored Lego. I do have the brown cows and speaking of those ... if we all support this Lego Ideas project https://ideas.lego.com/projects/001df6aa-2c65-402c-85ae-dde95cf7a148 we might get new Lego cows in a different color!

Ads are going absolutely NUTS on mobile! Can’t read the article for the hundreds of overlays.

LEGO really needs a better system to stop people from buying 200 sheep / torsos / animals at a time."

Or maybe they need to forecast demand better. Some of us have a legitimate need for 200 of a particular animal.

Good. That's plenty of revenue generated from casual users who are not logged in, then.

@Huw:
At times, it becomes nearly impossible to hit the Login link because ads are covering it, causing the page to shift around, and tying up system resources to the point when you do manage to hit it, it may not register.

And even when you are logged in, on a slower connection, it can be nearly impossible to read the comments because each image takes as much as half a second to load, so by the time you find your spot, the entire page shifts down the size of one image, and you have to go chase down where you left off again.

there's a pretty clear stylistic difference between the horse and the rest of the animals, I kinda wish the others stayed closer to that, it would fit in better with the blockier look of minifigures imo.

Great article damn now I want some sheep.
41150 Contains a rooster that is not so "friendish" if you understand what I mean.
It doesn't have the puppy eyes and the pin your ribbow hole.

For future can you make this for dino's?

Lego must be monitoring brickset.com or something, as the sheep has been available for the last 30+ hours or so. That's way longer than anything I have seen before. Sometimes it was gone in under an hour. Get it while you can, people! Who knows if it will remain available, but even if it does, it's a good buy that you're not gonna regret.

The chicken comes in so many colors. I have a gold one and a silver one.
Mill Village Raid has always been the one that got away. I found it for $50 at a discount store while visiting my parents near Christmas time. Mentioned it as a gift idea, but I only got the Kings Carriage instead. I will ignore the fact that I was in my 30s at the time ;)

The new Mickey farm set also comes with the new tan horse (first tan horse appeared in the new Medieval Blacksmith shop.) My wife purchased two of the Mickey farm sets, bought a few extra sheep, and combined them into a sheep farm. She already has an extensive horse ranch (super expanded version of Paradisa Rolling Acres Ranch 6419-1) and expanded farm (Mill Village Raid), but apparently needs sheep. The only farm animal she doesn't have is the black & white cow. We're hoping that popularity of the new wildlife rescue sets will lead to more farm sets with the larger animals (and yes, she has every single wildlife rescue set - she 'needed' them for the zoo!) Hopefully Lego will continue to add animals that are not too 'Friend-ish' so we can continue to expand our Lego farming community and local zoo.

I don't like this sheep design.

I got 2 Mill Village Raid sets on sale. I should have bought more.
