Random set of the day: Modular Space Transport
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 6892 Modular Space Transport, released during 1986. It's one of 17 Space sets produced that year. It contains 150 pieces and 2 minifigs.
It's owned by 1,324 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

How do they expect to get anywhere with such low clearance of that chassis? They're already scraping off the back bumper!
My favorite modular, looks great in between the Cafe Corner and Palace Cinema

Doesn’t matter: transparent yellow and transparent red.
While Space was fantastic at modular aircraft, it's modular groundcraft where a bit... clunkier. Between the two Mars subthemes, M-Tron, and Galaxy Squad we saw hints of what could've been, but that was mostly modularity in one set and not between sets. Getting something on the scale of the literal flagships but for a buggy or cart would be fantastic, and all you'd really need is a standardized width/chassis to build segments on.
And here I thought I owned every modular!
I love Classic Space but this is a set that doesn't really work
Ah, the 1st gen minivan of Classic Soace.......
Wait, this has wheels? I thought this was a Modular SPACE Transport? Seriously, I thought it was a spaceship...
Someone need to dye all that blue black. Will look so much better.
They found the edge of flat moon
When I was a kid, a friend was going to ask his parents for this set for his birthday after seeing it my house. He asked if it came with figures. (We were used to the Star Wars sets of the time that didn't come with action figures...because who really wants 20 Luke Skywalkers?)
Yeah, not a lot of ground clearance...but pretend that those wheel guards are hover engines. Problem solved!
MST 6892 just doesn't have the same ring as MST 3000...
I had a lot of space from this era as a kid, but don’t remember this at all. It’s ugly now and I assume I thought it was ugly then.
Yeah, not all the Classic Space sets were a hit...
I got this model when I was a kid. I was soooo disappointed at the time of receiving it. After playing with it however, you learn it’s value. The model really is a hidden gem of a play set and so well balanced. Even more than one person can join in the fun. I still use the pieces today too.
Hmmm...has an 'AT-AT on a budget' look to it, even though it's on 'roller skates':)
Looks horrible. I love it.
One of my few childhood sets! Got it as a birthday present from cousins. Wasn't a Space Lego kid, but did enjoy having this.
Well, at least it has an arrow showing which end is the front. I was confused!
It's a battleship.
No, it's a hodgepodge. That's what it is.
I had this set as a kid and really loved it. I really liked the way it "hovered" across the floor when I pushed it because the wheels were hidden. It came with a lot of tiles which was unusual for the time. It was a clever set the way it split and when the front cockpit detached with a grown-up Technic pin it was very swooshable despite it being large set (note to self – don't remake it and dash your childhood perceptions of how big it really was!)
In 1986 LEGO makes "6892: Modular Space Transport" with tiny wheels.
In 1986 LEGO also makes "6926: Mobile Recovery Vehicle" with giant wheels, no doubt to recover "6892 Modular Space Transport", aka the St.Chamond of 1986 Space LEGO.
Either some sort of inside LEGO designer joke to make two vehicles the same size, same year, with opposite wheel size, or an epic win for the LEGO military industrial complex - selling defective vehicles to LEGO Space and then selling LEGO Space the recovery vehicle to recover said defective vehicle.
Not sensing a lot of love for this one, maybe it's because 1986 was Blue Space's last stand and the imminent dominance of white aesthetics made it seem dated? I don't remember it being on the shelves for the usual 3 years.
Always looked more appealing to me somehow than 6926 released the same year, though of course it was 6940 or 6985 that were the real standout releases. Wish I had got my hands on 6783 though, that felt like a leap into a different era with the Light & Sound System, while still being "modular".
I love Classic Space but this... not so much.
This surely is one hell of a modular space ship.

I love Classic Soace.
“Space transport” just means it’s a glorified bus that’s on the moon doesn’t it?
Possibly the ugliest Classic Space sets. I mean, no Classic Space set is ugly, so let's say "less beautiful".
They should have _at least_ put it on a landing plate instead on sand dunes for the box photo... now it looks like the driver slipped off road.

And considering this is the RSOTD on the day of the official announcement of the UCS AT-AT, that's quite a coincidence.
A great design by the great DANIEL AUGUST KRENTZ.

6926 is the ugly one
@iriz This is afaik the ONLY space set designed by a castle designer
This always was a strange set, the spacecraft in the front would fly off, but as no propulsion more a glider hence the launch at the edge of a cliff, but as no air in space unsure how much uplift you would get? The module at the back just fell off, so really a rig for transporting these two around. I always wondered if you could build a launcher for a single larger aircraft which might make the set more appealing.
This looks...quite bad actually. No swoosh, no wheels, weird technic beam at the bottom. No, I don't think this one aged well at all.
The only thing helping it is the trans red.
The LEGO photography is bad on this.
It’s supposed to look like it’s floating. They could’ve angled it better to disguise the tires.

"You can mock its ground clearance all you want but some of us remember the great lie that was 6927 All-Terrain-Vehicle with the height of a single plate between its undercarriage and a hefty insurance claim."
In fairness to LEGO, 6927 was known in the UK as Mobile Tracking Station, so no claim - at least in the UK - to be able to manage all terrains. Also, in a weightless environment, the clearance required is less because it’s easier to drive over obstacles.

I agree that this isn’t particularly good looking but it does offer a little swooshability: the front section detaches to form a small flyer.
@legoDad42, I suspect the picture was taken that way on purpose so that prospective buyers wouldn’t think it could (somehow) actually float and therefore be disappointed when it turned out it couldn’t.
Admit it, Classic Space is often seen with rose-tinted glasses too, and not all sets from that era are classics. Nor does the blue tran. Yellow and white/grey automatically make something awesome. It's okay. Sets like these make the real standouts from the era and beyond more special. And there's definitely fun to be had with it. But it's just not automatically a great set if it's Classic Space.
I believe this was background set dressing in this amazing, yet relatively gloomy fan created online game: https://jalex.se/classicspaceadventure/ However, it was in an underground garage it couldn't possibly have entered on the side-scrolling 2D plane.
I only ever remember this one from catalogs. Yeah, I’ll admit I never wanted it the way I wanted other CS sets, but I wouldn’t have turned my nose up at it, either.
SPACE is SPACE, after all.
My favorite modular!

No,it's for transporting space, it doesn't go there.

The arrows denote where the Technic pins line up so you can reconnect the modules. I don’t have this particular set but in all the others I do have from the era, the arrows always point to some connection location.
@jkb:
It does kinda have a “large, stone fortress” vibe to it. I bet Red’s mother was a hamster, and White’s father smelled of elderberries.
@Mechalex:
One plate? That just means it can get stuck on all types of terrain, including fresh tarmac.
Love it, the "feet" must be some hover-technology while the wheels meant to be hidden, and not actually exist (cheater wheels)
Why do I think the wheels are meant to be just there to help it move ? :
72001 : Lance's Hover Jouster has hidden wheels but it's meant to be a hover vehicle, and wheels below on turntable make the movement smooth.
72006 : Axl's Rolling Arsenal has a hidden helper wheel inside.
@TeriXeri:
I built a tank that has hidden wheels. It’s for my Green Army Men Army, and like any cheap plastic tank, the treads don’t actually roll, so the tank has to have four tiny wheels hidden in the middle.

Actually, I like this set. Do you think Blacktrons are French (Les Trons-Noires)?
Modular Space Transport : Clone Turbo Tank :: Alien Moon Stalker : AT-AT
@jkb:
Nah. Yellows are the ones inside the fortress.
I never had this one, but having just flicked through the instructions what a blast this is. If you go back 40 years who wouldn't have enjoyed building this, taking it apart and rebuilding it into something else. What a great set. Now hunting on eBay!
