Review: 60326 Picnic in the Park
Posted by CapnRex101,
Emergency services and exploration sometimes dominate LEGO City, therefore overshadowing less dramatic products! 60326 Picnic in the Park conveys that difference, portraying an attractive outdoor setting and introducing the marvellous new squirrel component.
These minifigures feature several new elements too, including an exclusive dark brown hair piece. Additionally, the price of £12.99, $19.99 or €14.99 seems inexpensive, providing the perfect opportunity to acquire some unique pieces.
Summary
60326 Picnic in the Park, 147 pieces.

Minifigures
LEGO City minifigures are becoming increasingly varied and several unique parts are therefore provided here. They include the park worker's head, which features subtle wrinkles and seems slightly older than many equivalent characters. The dark green cap and legs look excellent too, complementing the minifigure's collar.
The torso has appeared in several previous sets, having been produced for the scout in 60202 People Pack - Outdoor Adventures. This design suits the gardener, although his three-wheeled vehicle displays a leaf symbol and including similar branding on the minifigure would have been beneficial.
Two visitors to the park are also included, again featuring new elements. The older minifigure wears a unique blouse and jacket which look brilliant, especially in bright light blue. The boy's torso originates from Hidden Side, but remains relatively scarce in LEGO City and looks great, including metallic silver buttons alongside white highlights.
However, this character's most interesting feature is definitely the new hair piece. This element includes appealing texture and is only available here in dark brown, while the black version is found in 60330 Hospital. The female hair component is more common and neither minifigure includes a double-sided head, but these smiling expressions are reasonable.
Cycling helmets also accompany both minifigures. Their different colours are appreciated, but I would welcome a dual-moulded helmet for characters with longer hair. Even if the hairstyle was not absolutely perfect, I think matching the hair colour would be adequate.
The Completed Model
LEGO City is sometimes criticised for focusing too heavily upon vehicles, so I am pleased that this tree and picnic table are the biggest models in this set. The tree is reasonably simple and only measures 12cm in height, although its bright colours are attractive and these parts could prove useful for constructing additional trees because they are fairly generic.
The picnic table makes good use of 1x3 arches, creating a superb repeated shape. The colour scheme of tan and medium nougat looks nice and two cups are provided, flanking a decorated pizza box. I dislike the light bluish grey tiles though. These are supposed to represent the edge of a path, but I would have preferred exclusively earthy colours.
Two printed acorns are nestled in the branches, shared with 60317 Police Chase at the Bank. These stand out nicely against the bright green and lime green leaves and another acorn is included as a spare. Of course, they are provided for collection by the squirrels, which are perhaps the most exciting addition to this set!
These animals are absolutely adorable, as expected. The squirrel element is available in three colours and two are supplied here, while the light bluish grey version is found in 60329 School Day. Including two different colours in one small set feels generous, especially since the black-haired squirrel only appears in 60326 Picnic in the Park. Their bushy tails look wonderful and I like the squirrels' large eyes as well.
Vehicles inevitably accompany the picnic table and tree, beginning with this bicycle and trailer. Flame yellowish orange bicycles have appeared before, but this brighter yellow variant is new, matching the crate. The connection structure between this bicycle and the trailer is fairly basic, although few alternatives were available and the light bluish grey droid arm suffices.
The park maintenance vehicle appears slightly more complex, featuring lovely curved shaping across the front. The colour scheme of green and orange looks good, arranged with a green stripe continuing through the centre. The roof is accordingly decorated with a stickered leaf emblem, which is the only sticker in this set.
There is space for one minifigure inside the cab, with accessories secured on clips behind the driver. Furthermore, the flatbed section can accommodate some flowers for planting, perhaps replacing those already planted under the tree. The flower assemblies are nearly identical, so they can be easily swapped.
Overall
60326 Picnic in the Park appears reminiscent of the fantastic People Packs created for LEGO City between 2016 and 2019. Despite lacking the vast selection of minifigures, the new pieces and relaxed environment certainly recall those popular sets, which were primarily focused upon leisure in LEGO City. This makes a welcome change from emergency services.
The squirrels are probably my favourite feature of the set, although the unique minifigure parts and printed acorns are also appealing. Moreover, the price of £12.99, $19.99 or €14.99 seems very reasonable, especially in Europe, so I would absolutely recommend adding this set to any LEGO City display!

What a great set! Was one of the first ones I picked up this year and like @CapnRex101 says it is pretty darn perfect!
I feel like the acorn prints would work better on transparent tiles, as they look a bit odd here.
Great review! I look forwards to getting some squirrels. The black one will go to live in Mirkwood.
Wow that black squirrel is striking.
I absolutely adore squirrels!!! This is a must buy for me! Also that kids jacket outfit reminds me of Shang Chi’s casual outfit.
Once again, a set that isn't expensive but still LEGO exclusive here.
Kids who can't read yet, or aren't experienced in finding stuff on the web or don't have access to a LEGO store won't find this.
Yeah, I get it, it's niche, but with that mindset, you can give up before greenlighting production.
A shame many won't know this as it's even a set worth the price.
It's overpriced and an exclusive to Toys R Us here in Singapore. But they've already had a 3 for 2 on City sets! 3 in the bag. Bigger tree, more squirrels :)
This set would have been a day 1 purchase for me, if only it wasn't a LEGO exclusive :(
Depending on how deep you want to get into slight variations (open/closed studs), the yellow bike was in 6420 but now thankfully a lot easier/cheaper to get.
Is anyone else old enough to remember when getting a pitchfork would've been a huge deal? Now it's so common it's not even noticed. This is a golden age we're living.
I wish it wasn't lego exclusive. But a nice set. To the point where I wonder why it took this long for us to get a set like this!
Lovely little set with quite a few handy parts, and at a price that made it a great GWP Threshold Topper Upper!
The kid must be a big Patrick Mahomes fan! Lol

The helmet is especially disappointing because there's already a perfect piece from a CMF! Other than that, this is a really nice set.
I definitely plan on picking this set up sometime. It looks neat. I doubt I'd keep it together, but I can understand the appeal of adding it to your city. Plus squirrels help sell sets I'm sure.
Okay the Marvel Superheroes line has no excuse left to not put Doreen Green into a set now... Let's go nuts!

Oh my word!! That hair though!!!
I have looked at the set a dozen times but only after you mentioned it, I saw the black squrirel :D
Ah, yes, the Yellow Bike W/ Accessories set.
The yellow bike is not new, but very rare. It appeared in I think one set, way back in the 1900’s, and the only bikes that cost more than even a damaged yellow bike were non-production colors. So, even more than the squirrels, this inclusion is a big deal. They’ll make more squirrels, but there’s no guarantee of more yellow bikes.
And speaking of squirrels, in the US, there are two types of squirrels. There are black ones and grey ones. When they interbreed, that’s when you get red squirrels. Yeah, weird.

I'm really hoping that the next series of Marvel minifigs follows the DC series's example of being full of obscure characters. If we can have Batmite and King Tut, we can have Squirrel Girl and Hydra Bob
I have one will probably get a second as great for a food area and maintenance trucks in a theme park plus squirrel battle packs..

Joke fail.
adjective
1. attracting attention by reason of being unusual, extreme, or prominent."
How was the joke a fail? It was making good use of the multiple meanings of the word striking.
I thought this looked good from the release photos. This review makes it look even more attractive. Will be a great addition to my town, when I get around to building it!

Homonym
Noun:
Each of two or more words having the same spelling or pronunciation but different meanings and origins.
As mentioned the tree is a little too simplistic, but otherwise this is a fantastic set.
Hmm, strange thing that for any markets in Europe region is this set LEGO exclusive...I´ ve just bought 2 pcs in czech local Tesco store.
2 squirrels, 3 great minifigs, a yellow bike, printed tiles with acorns, a yellow crate at just €14,99, I'm in!!

Can eating a pizza sitting at a bench really be called a "picnic" though...
Good review! This is definitely a very fun and charming scene for a low-priced set like this.
It's also a great example of how much more generous the City theme is with buildings and scenery this year than it generally was in any of its earlier years. For a long time it was a frequent complaint that the City theme's heavy focus on vehicles made it poorly suited for building actual cities! But you can create a pretty substantial layout of streets and buildings from this year's sets alone, especially if you complement the "road system" sets with natural scenery from sets like this one.
On that note, there is a part of me that wonders if the grey tiles on the set's base might be meant as an indicator of where you can link it together with another set or MOC (by adding a 2x4 tile in place of the 2x4 tile). While it wouldn't make sense to connect it right up against a road, it could easily be connected to a sidewalk, just like the outdoor training center from set 60306.
This set's tree is honestly very nicely constructed for a set this size! It's tall enough to be convincing as an oak tree, and while the sides flush with the edges of the base lack any branches of their own, the branches and leaves on the other two sides are packed tightly enough to give the tree a very healthy appearance. The horizontal stripes created by the 2x2 Medium Nougat tiles feel a little unrealistic, but they don't really hurt the aesthetics.
The picnic table is a wonderfully parts- and space-efficient build as well, despite eating up a lot of the set's 8x8 footprint. The use of 1x4 plates and tiles gives it both a nice wooden board texture and a good balance of studded and non-studded surfaces. Now, one improvement I feel LEGO could have made to the "picnic" portion of the build would be to include one or two quarter-circle tiles representing slices of pizza to make the picnic role-play scenario feel more believable.
Squirrels are also a very fun new wild animal for LEGO City, especially since they can be such a great fit for both urban and rural environments. It's great that this year's sets give us three different colors of squirrel right off the bat, and that this set alone includes two of those three colors!
I'm a little indifferent to the park maintenance vehicle and worker, since when I was a kid I feel like I was way more interested in and attentive to the sort of park activities that I could actually relate to taking part in, rather than the 'grown-up' park activities like tending plants or mowing the grass which I'd only ever see happening in the background.
That said, it certainly boosts this set's play value to include both "work" and "leisure" play scenarios in the same scene. And including a vehicle for each of those scenarios expands them to include not just the experiences within this tiny section of park, but also the experiences the figures have on the way there and back. Especially if you incorporate the set into a larger layout with places for the characters to come from and roads/paths for them to travel on.
All in all, this is a very thoughtfully designed set that really shows a lot of attention to making the most of its size and premise. I hope the City theme continues to introduce more little leisure-focused vignette sets like this one in future years: perhaps a beach scene, or a winter scene, or a creek-side fishing scene, or a backyard gardening scene.
It also has me thinking about other sorts of "kid-size" vehicles that could be featured alongside small vignettes like this. For instance, the crate mold used here could be used with some different wheels and a pull-along handle as a classic "little red wagon". Some other possibilities that could be neat to see would be a molded tricycle for younger child characters, or a tiny brick-built car (maybe built on the chassis from the Super Heroes Mighty Micros sets) similar to toy pedal-powered cars like the iconic Little Tikes "Cozy Coupe".
Whether or not LEGO pursues any of those options, it certainly gets my imagination running in a way I can perhaps channel into some

There's the side-order of a lovely bit of squirrel too!
Its so good that LEGO have finally introduced a Bright Yellow bicycle again after 38 years (it only previously appeared in that color in a 1998 postal worker set)
And the rest of the parts in the set are pretty nice as well.
A great set, but I worry pizza box will just be left behind as litter, there is no litter bin. But as in real life, pizza boxes are too big to fit in bins. It's good to have a tuk tuk to minifigure scale at last, but I think a gator would have been more accurate here
Squirrels are awesome! I'll add this one to my collection.
I have one question, not directly connected to this set. Why are so few sets with those middle sized legs?! Aiming toward City sets
What a delightful set. Not a single police officer or fire fighter to be seen either :-)

@xboxtravis7992:
Careful what you wish for. Without headlining a feature film, she’s exactly the sort of character they’d dump on San Diego and never produce again. Anyways, I haven’t really looked too deeply into it, but it’s probably possible to figbash a decent SG from stock parts already. And teal scooters aren’t a problem. It’s the horde of angry squirrels that has really held things up. I did pick up the SG+scooter action figure pack when it popped up at Target, so I could use it as reference material, so one of these days I’ll give it a shot, even if they don’t.
@SimonMClabby:
I’ve already got Hydra Bob. Just take a regular green Hydra goon and park him next to Deadpool.
I see things like that park worker vehicle (with 4 wheels rather than 3) scooting around my university campus all the time. Great little LEGO build, perfectly scaled to a minifigure, the park aspect of this set is really lacking though - that tree is perfectly square in cross section. And for $20 it feels like there's something missing here.

Well I have kitbashed her already, using one of the Friends line's squirrels as a stand in for Tippy. But considering her prominence in the Lego Marvel video games her continued absence in an official set hurts.
But I pray there is no exclusive SDCC plans for her... that would be truly awful. Just shove her into one of those Spiderman sets, she goes to the same university as Peter Parker in the comics so it's not an unreasonable idea to merchandise her via proximity to Spiderman.

Sh*t on it....
@PicnicBasketSam:
Three wheels seems like a terrible design. They put two in back to better support a cargo load, especially if it’s not balanced side-to-side. But doing so makes a vehicle prone to rollovers when you corner too fast. And with those squirrels lurking around, you just know one of them will jump out into the middle of the road to cause you to crash, while the squirrels are celebrating with high-fives and hand-slaps.
@xboxtravis7992:
What parts did you use for SG?
Speaking of people packs, why did Lego stop making them? They were very popular and a great way to populate layouts; which would have complemented the road system and 'connectivity' of these newer sets well.

Ahhh, Americans!
No sense of humour ….
So when the review mentions no double-sided heads, I'm wondering, "The woman's hair would cover that, why didn't they use one on her?" Then it mentions the helmets and I'm like, "Ah, that's why."
I already had this set on order, now I'm looking forward to it even more!

I had to dig around for it, but I did post the figure on Brickshelf a long while back. Its not perfect, the hair collides with the tail: https://brickshelf.com/gallery/xboxtravis/Collection/img_7565euro.png
Lovely set, really like that small vehicle. Seems a little sad to have pizza for picnic though.
When I was a kid I wished for more sets like this (Paradise / Town theme), that touch upon mundane subjects.
And Pirates. And Space.
I like this set. I got as an extra buy to push me over the edge for a GWP. And it didn't disapoint.
There was a 3 for 2 sale at Toys "R" Us the week this set arrived after a delay; I'm surprised it hadn't sold out within the first few hours and I only saw one customer bag three copies of it. In fact, I didn't get anything from that promo (which included City and, shockingly, Star Wars); I was only there for the Night Protector CMF as well as Mario Character Packs Series 4, both of which had also only arrived that week.
It's not something I'd get 3 copies of, though. 2 squirrels are plenty considering I already have Friends squirrels as well, and I want the grey one too. Is that one only in 60329?
@MrClassic: Which small vehicle? There are two.
@TheOtherMike : The three wheeled car.
Loved this set from the moment it was announced - keeping it on my wishlist for now as it would be the perfect addition to meet the ever-increasing GWP thresholds. Particularly like the female minifigure. Some really great City torsos this year.
I built my own park on 3 baseplates for my modular building street during Corona lockdown, so I'm definately gonna get this for the vehicles and squirrels. Never noticed you could combine the flowers and tentacle plants in such a way.
Ouch! Sold out at the Utrecht LEGO Store, very popular they say, but it keeps coming and going..
@Spike730:
You mean the grass shoot with the curlicue at the top? Yeah, it’s a bar-diameter hole, so flowers that have bar-diameter stems (mostly developed for Friends, I believe) can plug into the curlicue. Or you could arm them with knives and swords, and have them declare war on vegans.
60326 is the Patrick Mahomes origin story, sort of like Batman Begins. As a young boy, watching his pizza get torn to shreds by the squirrel horde of a demented groundskeeper inspired him to give up picnics forever and devote himself fully to football.
Those squirrels are so adorable! You can buy them on bricks and pieces for 1.43$.
@ @xboxtravis7992:
Ah, shoot, I was hoping for better news. Yes, she’s recognizable. I’d been thinking of using the wolf tail, which I believe comes in reddish-brown, and which wouldn’t pose any problems with most hairstyles. The skunk tail (did that one come with a fox?) is a much squirrelier shape, but the color’s lighter than I’d prefer. Is that the bomber pilot/explorer jacket from S2 CMF? The pattern is probably the best one out there, but I wish that part was dark-brown. The only dark-brown leather jacket I can think of is Indy, though. And I was hoping you’d figured out a solution for the ears, since the only appropriate ears I’d been able to think of were the Catwoman cowl (um, no.) and the CMF cat-burgler hair (needs a haircut).
Anyways, I definitely want to find a goofy, open-mouthed expression, grab one of these new squirrels and a teal-ish scooter, and start adding her to our layouts. Maybe even design a Mighty Micro for her. I’ve got one for Deadpool where he’s wearing a unicorn costume and driving a taco.

1900's thanks that made me laugh
Reading that comment about the welcome change of pace from fire and police sets got me thinking: Lego City doesnt actually seem to be a very nice place, does it? Theres obviously a LOT of crime, a LOT of arsonists on the loose, and well, both those things repeated over and over and over... Sure theres a few parks like this, but the extreme amount of emergency services might indicate that it might not be the safest place for a picnic.
@gorf43:
Yes, there are definitely a lot of criminals. They wear prison stripes, often combined with domino masks. But we don’t really have much concrete evidence of arsonists. Fire, sure, but that doesn’t prove causation. It could be bad wiring, lightning strikes, someone who is epically unskilled at cooking on a grille...or yes, arson. But someone would have to investigate to make that determination.

Arson certainly seems to be a prevalent issue in Lego City as evidenced by the not one but TWO "Fire Starter" sets (60088 and 60106).
@Binary_Code:
Oh, is that what those are? Whew! The first time I spotted one, I was concerned that it might be encouraging real kids to take up arson. Seeing a second set with the same name wasn’t reassuring.
Seems the only 'negative' perhaps worth mentioning is the lego store exclusivity? (is that worldwide?).
Seems a great little set. Bizarrely a suitable MINI WIG W/ Helmet does exist, albeit part of the mountain biker cmf.
Imagining if this set also came with a white bird...
@Andhe:
Walmart lists it as “sold by Walmart”, so it’s not just resellers looking to take a loss on sales tax. One Target near where I live shows “limited stock”. Looks like a general release in the US.
The CMF helmet is post-HP1/TLM2, which were the last and first waves when they changed from exclusively Chinese production to global production across at least five different nations. The helmet could, in theory, be accessible to regular set designers, but maybe it depends on which plant has the mold.
I do have a pair of spare “cave birds” from my second copy of Home Alone, since they used unprinted white birds (no printed eyes = blind = lives in permanent darkness) in the indoor Christmas tree.
Nice set review. Seems like a good set for the cost. I think the trike, bike, and Squirrels really justify the cost, if it gets down 20% in the US it will be a great buy!
@xboxtravis7992:
I’ve started working on my own Squirrel Girl, and here’s what I’m currently looking at:
For hair, I’m thinking the new Ron Weasley hair, partly because I actually have it available. Friends has a new pair of cat ears on a plastic headband, and I’m debating using one of those for her squirrel ears (doing so may mean changing her hairstyle).
For her head, I’ve currently got S18 Brick Suit Girl, again, because it’s something I have available. I wanted a face that makes her look appropriately nuts, but I’m not sure this is the right one.
For the torso, I finally settled on Frank Rock from Monster Fighters, with arms from the S12 Dino Tracker, which gives me a dark-brown, short-sleeved, fur-lined leather jacket. The shirt, unfortunately, has dark spots on it, so I hit it with an olive green Sharpie to cover them up.
Legs will be coming from the S22 Birdwatcher, which I’ll have to pick up soon.
I do like the shape of the skunk/fox tail more, but hate how it’s mounted at the neck, and only comes blended with white, so I’m going with the wolf tail in reddish-brown, from either Tasmanian Devil or Wile E. Coyote.
And then there’s the scooter. I cracked open a copy of 853990 to get the azure Vespa. I figured out how to add high sideview mirrors to better match the action figure I found. I’m working on adding a basket to the front (I think I have a workable solution using S7’s Little Red Riding Hood and a pair of Brickarms monopods), but the tiny windshield is right out. On the back end I’m giving it a white seat, and the plan is to eventually have one squirrel riding in the basket and another perched on the seat. I’d like to get a pink hair bow from Friends and put it on one of the squirrels.
