Review: 30588 Kids' Playground
Posted by MeganL,
30588 Kids' Playground is a fun little polybag that's currently a gift with purchase at LEGO.com when you spend over £40 / $40 / €40 on City sets.
Compared to some of the GWPs that have been offered recently it's not particularly exciting, but the spend threshold to acquire it is low and it contains two unique minifigures, so it's not all bad.
The two minifigures are a little boy and a little girl. It's a nice change to have two minifigures included. They're dressed for a day of fun, but it looks like they're on their to or from school, considering they have their backpacks with them.
Both the boy and girl have nicely printed torsos, the boy has a flannel vest over top a t-shirt with a peeled banana on it. The girls seems to be dressed for an entirely different season with a white sleeveless top with a green pattern. The pattern for both of them continues on the back.
There's plenty to do at the park, even for a small set. There's a small merry go round, on which the little girl decides to have a snack.
The girl isn't the only one who likes the merry-go-round.
Note: sloths are not included in this set.
There's also a skate ramp, with a small fountain, garden with some flowers and a frog, and a lamppost.
It should be perfect for the little boy, who has a skateboard.
The only problem is, the skateboard doesn't quite fit on the ramp!
Overall thoughts
This is a cute little set with quite a bit of play value. I like that there are two minifigures included, and will go well in any park scene. If you're thinking of making some City purchases this will be a nice little bonus.
Thanks to LEGO for providing the set for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is seeing some "leaves" in the girl's top's green "pattern"...
As soon as I saw those sloths, I knew this was a MeganL review
What’s up with sloths? Is this a new trend I’ve missed?

Yeah they keep popping up and are even multiplying, I forget what review started it.

Are you suggesting the pattern looks like cannabis leaves because that's a bit of a stretch
Does these racksags indicate... A RETURN OF A PIRATE-THEME?
(always hoping)

I don’t understand the use of quotation marks around the word pattern.

They look like apples to me.
Cute set, but that skateboard filling the entire ramp is a bit silly!
I'd love to see a smaller skateboard piece, that one's been around since Lego Island Xtreme stunts in 2002 ish if I recall correctly.

They're apples. Clearly.
I think it's a GWP for that treshold and a great polybag when you consider what other City polybags thematically contain (usually some kind of vehicle) and it's the reason I shopped till shipping dropped so early this year (GWP is only available for the first week here).

I see a Rebel Alliance logo.
This GWP would have been more interesting to me if it had included the colourfull 12897 Backpack that is also in the new School Day set, as I have plenty of these brown Knapsacks already.
I think it's cute. Most polybags tend to be small vehicles, so it's nice to get one that's actually a bit of scenery for Lego city (particularly since there's a larger park-themed City set out this year).
Looks nice and cute. Defo one to keep an eye out. Just hope it will be widely available. Hunting for polybags is always such a pain in the deriere...

I see where you're coming from but you have to want to see them (or you woke up too early this morning)
Aaah had been hoping this one would turn up in the 'supermarket box' selection, so bit disappointing its a GWP.
Perhaps they should have just made the ramp into a slope, at least then it would fit and be a slight play feature.

Because @MeganL called it a pattern in the review.
Cute set. It's a dissapointment it's a GWP instead of a regular, more widely available polybag. Why? It's the best small City set we've had in a while! You could even 'army build' schoolchildren for the school set!
Sloths sure do love going on the merry go round.
It looked like a nice polybag, but it required 50$ and even the Ice Cream Truck Heist set or whatever didn't reach that threshold. So few City sets made it possible to get it that I decided to pass. Too bad it didn't work with the new Modular, because those are perfect to populate a city.
Why do you show the sloths in your reviews?! They’re not included so it’s annoying!

Agreed, and the goat/sloth joke is overdone at this point in reviews.
I don't mind some lighthearted humor but do it in non-review posts.

They're a fun, idiosyncratic addition and I like them a lot.
It's a shame so many pieces have been put into landscaping when the ramp isn't big enough for the skateboard. But it is very nice to get 2 minifigs in a polybag.
If you see something you don't like on the internet, scroll on down.

Of course, but then I must stop reading MeganL’s reviews and that would be a shame, because I like the reviews, just not the inclusion of parts that is NOT in the set reviewed!
I was just scrolling through not really concentrating mostly looking at the pics and thought 'oh there's animals included?!' and then I realised.... Dang, she got me! ;-)
The goats and sloths always bring a smile to my face, and it is always clear that they are not included. Please keep it up! :)

99% sure this is a polybag.
This is a cute little polybag that should complement the new school set well. If I had one criticism, I wish the figs had the newer style backpacks like in the school set instead of the old-fashioned rucksack used here. In all my years of school in the '90s and '00s I don't think I ever knew a kid who toted something like that around with them unless they were on some sort of camping/scouting trip!
By an amazing coincidence, From Bricks to Bothans reviewed this same plastic bag set on the same day.
He has 260 bags and pulls one at random Monday through Friday to review for all of 2022.

First, the merry-go-round. Then, the world! Sloths are taking over… very… very… sloooowly :~D
I think the required purchase amount should be reduced to 39 (i.e. threshold minus 1). If you buy a set of 39.99 you do not qualify and that bugs me enormously.
A new skateboard would be great(more to scale) - but they would also have to create new wheels that are not too fragile.

I totally agree. Perhaps it’s a case of the right hand (pricing decisions) and left hand (GWP threshold decisions) not knowing what the other is doing.
More likely though, it’s on purpose to get you to spend more knowing that there are no items for 1p and that you’ll have to spend at least an additional couple of pounds on something you don’t want. The threshold is false advertising.
If LEGO was really the goody-goody company it portrays itself to be, it would allow you to donate a few pence to LEGO’s chosen charity to make up the difference and allow you to qualify (and make that option known online and in stores). Funny how that isn’t the case.
Small set balanced by a low purchase level. Plus, it's really cute and was on my Want list, anyway.
A nice way to ring in the new year.
The sloths are designed to hang from bars; it's disappointing to see them just plopped down around the scenery and not integrated more cleverly into these reviews.
I wish I could walk into Lego Store and buy this off the shelf rather than it being a GWP. I would like to have this (plus the current Friends one). I never understand why it can't be a GWP OR just buy it for £4 or so. Give the shoppers the choice.
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks the goats/sloths have had their time. A joke doesn’t get funnier each time you repeat it. On the contrary…
I like lots of sloths and I cannot lie
I have had the store employee add the GWP even when I was one cent short on multiple occasions and I'm quite sure I've had it happen automatically in the online shop as well, but I just tried it and it doesn't with this one. Pity if they changed that as a policy.
I don't get the whining about the sloths; they're in one minor picture out of the ten (!) published in an otherwise well crafted article about a very small set.
Obviously a lot of people do like it, so if you don't just scroll past it...
Also pretty sure this polybag will show up in regular retail sooner or later;
it has happened with many GWP polybags in the past.
I am gonna need like 3 or 4 of these bags. Best parts polybag ever.
