Review: 40553 Woody and Bo Peep
Posted by Huw,Given the popularity of Toy Story it's perhaps surprising that LEGO is only now producing BrickHeadz of the colourful cast of characters.
40552 Buzz Lightyear and 40553 Woody and Bo Peep, the subject of this review, will be released next week.
Hats, helmets or fancy hair-dos are a requisite for a good BrickHeadz and given that both the characters have them, this double-pack should be something special.
Summary
40553 Woody and Bo Peep, 296 pieces.
£17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99 | 6.1p / 6.8c / 6.8c per piece.

An exeptional pair of BrickHeadz: colourful, detailed and elaborate, front and back.
- Woody's stuffing
- Big hair and a hat
- Possibly the best BrickHeadz double-pack so far
- Nothing
Woody is wearing his distinctive cowboy hat, which is set at an angle and attached using a hinge, adding considerable interest to the figure.
In addition to the hat, the cowboy has all the features you'd expect him to: gun holster, checked shirt, cowhide jacket and sheriff badge, finely printed on a 2x4 tile. The lasso piece is new in dark orange.
The authentic details continue at the rear with spurs on his boots and the loop of the pull cord on his back. There's a snake in my boot!
He even has stuffing inside: there are two 625401 ICE CREAMs inside his hollow abdomen!
Bo peep is a riot of bold and pastel colours. Her big hair and a bow add detail, size and volume to the figure and the result is an exceptional and attractive BrickHeadz.
Some BrickHeadz are very boring at the back, but that's definitely not the case here: her blonde locks cascade down onto a contoured and curved purple cape.
Her shepherds' staff, 49492 TOOL, NO. 10, was originally introduced for the minifig version of the character in the 2019 Toy Story 4 sets and remains a rare piece.
This is an extraordinary pair of figures. They are colourful, interesting, and full of authentic and whimsical details. They are, in fact, among the best BrickHeadz ever produced.
We'll review 40552 Buzz Lightyear in the next few days. The spaceman and 40553 Woody and Bo Peep, will be available at LEGO.com from 1st February.

The stuffing is the best! :D
The hat looks so much better in real on these pictures, than the previously released images.
Great colors, great designs
I love Woody's stuffing, and the angle of the hat really gives the figure character. I'm a little sad they didn't use the 1x1 star tile for his badge though!
These are very cute. I love Woody’s lasso and Bo’s crook, and that Woody’s hat is perfectly tilted at a jaunty angle.
Looking very cool! Thanks for the review!
Woody's stuffing reminds me of the TNT in the Brickheadz Creeper. I love it when sets have little Easter eggs like that. I'm also digging the pull-string.
These are very cute.
These are very well done. In fact, incredible really. Cute set.
I absolutely love these, and the angle of woody's hat.
Great pictures, thanks. Having never seen Toy Story, I'll get these based purely on the fact that they look absolutely brilliant, even without any reference to its accuracy to the source!
Can we get a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, next?
I'm afraid I don't like the hat angle. It should be raked forwards, not back. As it is, he looks like Frank Sinatra.
First day purchase for me. Very well done!

Homer Simpson in 41632 is my favorite for this, with easter eggs in both the belly and brain.

Oh no - Now I've seen Frank, I can't unsee him!
Still a great BrickHeadz though... whoever it is!
@Huw - are these exclusive to Lego stores and online only or will they be available at other retailers? (If any set were exclusive, that would be perfect info for the new "review at a glance box", but I digress.)
Definitely getting both Toy Story sets. Great review!

Sests with a 40xxx number are almost always exclusive to LEGO stores and LEGO.com.
@Huw: I've got a minus for you: The light grey bricks that are clearly visible in the seams of the hat, and other off colour bricks seen in other seams. This has been an ongoing issue ever since the BrickHeadz theme was launched, I just don't understand why Lego doesn't use bricks of the same or similar colour underneath, whenever they're visible from the outside. Black for the hat would look much better (the brick with 4 studs on side doesn't exist in brown/dark brown yet).

Just check the instructions (available on Brickset).
@MrClassic:
There was an interview on New Elementary some time back where the guy who came up with the whole format was talking about printed elements. People moan every minute of the day about expensive D2C sets getting tons of stickers instead of prints, but each theme is only afforded a certain number of new elements, which includes new colors for existing molds, and any new prints. For most themes, minifigs tend to chew up a significant portion of that allotment, but Brickheadz has no minifigs. This allowed them to almost exclusively use prints over stickers, and introduce a ton of new colors for existing shapes, which was really cool. There’s still a cap on new elements for the theme as a whole, though, and one of the concessions that appears to have been made is (mostly) standardized interiors, like light-bley SNOT walls forming the skulls (white actually would have made more sense in that regard), and pink 2x2 bricks for the brains.
If the parts are available in other colors, and they’re not using them, it may just be that the designer(s) haven’t really critically examined the builds to that level of detail. If they’re not available, every new color they use on the inside is one less for the outside, or one less new print.

That sadly seems to be the case and have been for a long time. I'm not suggesting re-colours of interior parts, I'm simply suggesting to use the ones available - and that's quite a few more than light grey when it comes to the brick with 4 studs on the side. The tall one with 2 studs on the side comes in even more colours. And then there are other interior bricks and plates that are available in loads of different colours, but still they choose off colour ones that peak through to the outside every now and then...
