Review: 40527 Easter Chicks

Posted by ,

Easter is nearly upon us and in the run-up, two Easter-themed gifts with purchase will be available at LEGO.com from today until the 16th April.

Those spending in excess of $40/£40/€40 will receive polybag 30583 Easter Bunny, and those who exceed $65/£65/€65 will also receive 40527 Easter Chicks. Today we're looking at the larger set.

Summary

40527 Easter Chicks, 318 pieces.

A fun and impressively substantial GWP.

  • Colourful Easter egg
  • Clever egg cracking feature
  • Opportunity for easy customisation
  • Chicks' proportions are peculiar

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Promotional items have become a bit larger in recent years and this set contains 318 pieces, across five numbered bags. They certainly look colourful!

The instructions are divided too, between the chicks and the Easter egg, so two people could build them simultaneously. Note the decorative seal on the covers, that frequently appears on Seasonal sets and is also on the box.

Easter eggs are obviously a common feature of Easter-themed LEGO sets, featuring varied construction techniques. This example makes good use of curved slopes on the outside and improves upon 40371 Easter Egg in that regard.

The inclusion of decorative tiles is reminiscent of the 2020 Easter egg as well. They look great and resemble tulips which perfectly suits the season, although there are surprisingly few studs to accommodate those tiles.

However, there's good reason for that because the egg cracks open. I love the jagged edges and uneven split, with continued bright colours inside.

Both halves of the egg can accommodate chicks, which is clever. Of course, you cannot keep either chick inside the egg, but there is enough space to store the loose tiles.

These chicks' proportions seem slightly odd, but their beaks and large eyes are very cute. The feathered texture also looks excellent, if simple. I wish they were a bit more squat and chubby though.

Bright light yellow, flame yellowish orange and the standard yellow pieces are combined across the feathers, with orange feet. The different colours are definitely effective. Articulation is limited to the wings, but that gives enough movement to convey some personality.

While maybe not as appealing as recent Seasonal models or as creative as last year's 40449 Easter Bunny's Carrot House, 40527 Easter Chicks is fun. The breaking egg is clever and the chicks are fittingly adorable. Also, there are no stickers which is always a bonus.

The spend threshold of $65/£65/€65 feels pretty reasonable too, considering the size.

This set is available now with qualifying purchases on LEGO.com.

By in Germany,

Don't know about you, but I prefer to paint eggs that don't contain living chicks. But apparently LEGO thinks otherwise. :)
I don't mind the chicks proportions, if you compare them to the previous sets these are much better.

I can see me making a wholly unnecessary purchase to get these. They'll look nice with the growing collection of Easter sets.
Good value GWP, I'd value this set at about £17, so the low spend threshold plus the polybag makes this very worthwhile.

Very cute little set! Also a good time if there's a modular you still want as it gives you the chicks, the bunny and the vintage taxi, at a lower threshold than the taxi originally was on it's own!

There is no Easter Bunny, there is no Tooth Fairy, and there is no Queen of England!
I’ve been watching these videos about PETA games recently and a few of them have chicks— they originated in Super Chick Sisters but have since reappeared in the glorious Pirates of the Carob Bean. Couldn’t help but make that connection between this set and those.

And soon, they’ll be no Trigger_ on BrickSet for destroying the childhoods of the kids on BrickSet.
