Random set of the day: Speed Slammer Bike
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 8646 Speed Slammer Bike, released during 2005. It's one of 29 Racers sets produced that year. It contains 126 pieces, and its retail price was US$10/£6.99.
It's owned by 675 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Complete with Turbo Tahu Action!
Yes! After playing with it and 8645 Muscle Slammer Bike I actually built the Hot Rod combiner model which has remained for the past 17 years. These were some of the very last LEGO sets I got before entering my Dark Ages. My favorite part of these sets were, of course, the glow-in-the-dark discs and Bohrok eyes. That still glow good!
Seeing this RSOTD just made me remember I own it and finally marked it in my collection.
With the head of a robo-rider mounted on the front of a bike as a trophy.

It would make a great retrospective to see where Bionicle parts were used outside of Bionicle during the 2000's. It was clear Lego was trying to get a use out of those molds, but it was always so distracting to suddenly see Tahu's flames or Pohatu Nuva's claws showing up in random sets. Alpha Team was very guilty of using Bionicle parts in random places for example.
I have this stupid scenario in my head where the kid completely misunderstands and is pounding the bike to make the launcher launch.
Why is my brain this way.
@xboxtravis7992:
Several of these bikes used Bohrok eyes, as did the Spybots. I think they still show up randomly (isn’t there a new set with clear ones?) Slammer hockey players used a bunch of the armor, plus the McToran heads. Some of the sets that used the track system had Gali hooks and Onua claws as obstacles. But there are two that rule the roost unchallenged. One is the Barraki eye, which some people probably think is just an update to the old Light&Sound light cover. And the other is the generic 2L friction axle-pin. Yeah, that’s right, I’m claiming that as a Bionicle piece, forevermore.

This is a very nice looking set. Combined model looks great, too. Actually, I prefer cars to bikes.

This just goes to show how those Bionicle parts weren't as "useless" as a lot of AFOLs liked to claim at the time. Bionicle parts were used outside of Bionicle quite frequently, especially in original themes like Alpha Team, Exo-Force, Racers, Knight's Kingdom, etc. Years later, once CCBS got introduced, that too was frequently used in the original theme of its time, like Ninjago, Chima, Nexo Knights, etc.
LEGO really should have thought twice before completely destroying all those perfectly useable precious molds for no reason...

You know, between these two bikes I prefer 8645. Yeah they really did a good job with the combiner model. And it works with one of the slammers to boot.
No rider, but it does have its own glowing eyes...this bike is sentient isn't it?
@xboxtravis7992:
Another one that pops up regularly is the voodoo ball.
@Brickalili:
Bohrike?

And glowing Bohrok eyes. It's like a battle in a box!
I just rebuilt this set the other week! There's some pretty cool and unique parts, like the small panels and Roborider head in blue.
Oh, and the glow-in-the-dark parts are still awesome.

Makes you wonder where the krana goes…
For some reason I have two of this set

Next to the Barraki eye (and the 2L notched axle potentially) the Bohrok eye is one of the most succesful parts that came out of bionicle, even moreso than the voodoo ball. It's been in 355 sets, many of which aren't bionicle. And that is _so far_ as it's been used all the way up to 2022.
@Zordboy , @Brickalili , maybe it's the missing 7th roborider, Slammer. From the jailbreak realm of cyberspace. Unless The Boss was the 7th, then it would be the 8th.
It's marvelous to look back at Racers and see how the theme did not care for the distinction between technic and system. In the same range there would be multiple sets with both building styles and various sizes. In this case there's 5 glow in the dark vehicles with two built with system. Add the bionicle parts and Racers was the most inclusive of all themes at the time.
I love old Technic. I really wish those old panels where utilized before the jump to more complex builds. Who even designed them, they're so wacky!
@Binnekamp:
Huh? According to Bricklink, the notched 2L axle came out in 1996, so five years before the first Bionicle sets. Since the un-notched version dates back to 1977, it’s really more of a redesign than a completely new part.
I had Buzz Saw from this range and year. Came from Sears of all places (back when A: they still existed and B: they carried a ton of toys for Christmas; despite the mall at this time still having Kaybee).
@cody6268: Toys at Sears, the mere existence of Kay-Bee Toys; you're really taking me back...
