AKA Classic Space Landing gear! Love'em!
Also known as a bar table stand.
I've always loved this piece. Landing gear, table, and so many other uses.
"The Galaxy Explorer. She's a beauty, isn't she? But don't go ogling at her undercarriage if you know what's good for you!" - Zeton Geonlix, 2nd Captain of the Galaxy Explorer.
This part's 'up'...Pre-order on G.E. 2.0 (:D)...life's not bad, at the moment:)
I've always known this as a sci-fi table
The original part was without a central hole all the way through, referred to on BL as a blind hole. I think it dumb that a hole can't see itself.
Also fun fact: the red version of this part, as far as I remember, is found in one Friends set.
Such a wonderful part.
Whether as a landing gear (918), engine thruster component (6870), floor lifter/support beam (6970), or as part of Bad Cop's chair/missile (70819), this has got to be one of the most recognizable and useful "non-brick" detail parts in LEGO system history. The part designers got this one just right...well, after they "corrected" the bind hole...
Also outta' curiosity: How many also used these as chairs/barstools...just me:)

Well? What happened to the 1st captain??
@ra226 :
Well...there was the accident with the airlock...and the hyper-reactor...and the food dispenser...ya' know, it was just a reeeeally bad day...
I consider this to be more “stanchion” than “landing gear”. The latter sounds like it should be retractable rather than snag-and-break-off-able.
They're totally retractable! At least in the imagination of 9 year old me...
A lot of large artillery were built with this piece, at least for me.

They ogled the undercarriage. That’s the reason they have to tell you not to do that now :D
I just looked up 60125 which is the only set with a yellow version of this piece. Holy bananas is that helicopter a chunker. Not to mention that little volcano is a beefy one as well.
It would be great if Huwbot could put up the alternate one, in this case 3940 so you can see how they differ.
Another piece that I first discovered in 6494 Mystic Mountain Time Lab (at least, the previous version of the part). As my first big set, it was the source of my discovery of many, MANY unusual and fascinating Lego piece designs when I got it back in 1999.
Time Cruisers may have been a mishmash, but that just meant you could discover a wild variety of different pieces, that you might have never seen before, all in one place!
2022 has brought this part back in larger numbers.
Sets with 3 or more this year :
60354 : Mars Spacecraft Exploration Missions - 3x Dark Stone Grey
60316 : Police Station - 6x Dark Stone Grey
80032 : Chang'e Moon Cake Factory - 4x Dark Azur (new color)
11022 : Space Mission - 4x Black
There are more sets with 1-2 as well.
Record Holder is 60036 : Arctic Base Camp from 2014 with 18 in Black.

I too associate this part originally with Mystic Mountain--and in dark grey with 6045 Ninja Surprise, though 7151 Sith Infiltrator took the cake for most of any set in my early collection--probably still most of any set, and the Sith Infiltrator use is quite "OG" in its use as landing gear, very similar to the Galaxy Explorer and its ilk.

The blue version was introduced in one of the first Belville sets^^ I also think it never appeared outside this set and the Time Cruisers train from 1997 (6497).

AKA rocket stage separator
A simple but useful and elegant piece that has stood the test of time in LEGO.
