Quick Look: BrickHeadz Pets

Posted by ,

The Brickheadz menagerie has been expanded following the launch two new sets, which brings the total number of pets sets to 12, far surpassing what might have been anticipated when they were introduced last year.

40546 Poodles is the fifth dog breed to be subject to the blocky treatment, while 40545 Koi Fish is the second aquatic species to be produced.

40545 Koi Fish

Koi carp usually have orange and black patches on their skins and that has been replicated here using a mixture of 1x1 rounded transparent tiles and printed tiles, and it looks fairly effective.

Two parts introduced recently, the 1x2 plate with rounded corners and the 1x1 nipple tile, make stud reversal so much easier, and they have been put to good use on the tails.

The fins on the real carp often look translucent so transparent pieces have been used here.

The standard 6x6 black display plates are mounted within a larger base which features a couple of water lillies.

Design-wise they are much the same as the fish in 40442 Goldfish, but with a few more details. It's perhaps a shame the design of the base has been altered, so they don't match.

40546 Poodles

Weighing in at over 300 pieces, this set contains more parts than any other BrickHeadz pets, although many of them are 1x1 elements of various types used to create the breed's distinctive coat.

I particularly like their tails!

The base of this one is a similar design to that of the fish, and comes with a stretch of pavement and a lamp post for the dogs to, er, 'use'.

Overall, these are a cute sets that collectors of the series, and those who keep Koi or poodles, will appreciate.

These, and some of the earlier Pets sets, are available at LEGO.com, priced at £13.49 / $14.99.

Thanks to LEGO for providing the sets for this article.

Yep, definitely getting the koi for the prints.

The quality of one of the prints on the smaller koi is very poor. Is that intentional? A sign of wear? Or just poor production?

Don't care much for the poodles, but the carp are nice, might get that one.

Ironically (considering I always complain about stickers instead of prints), the one thing I'm not so sure about are those printed tiles. The one on the small koi indeed looks like a misprint, and especially on the bigger one I don't think it looks that great with the brick built detail.

Yeah, I still don't understand the appeal of Brickheadz or Funko Pops.
As long as people enjoy them, I don't care. Doesn't affect me.

The koi are very cute and would make a nice companion piece to something like the bonsai tree or majestic tiger.

Cute additions to the Pets BrickHeadz, I may even pick these up at a discount because they look more distinct than some of the previous Pets sets.

@miskox: That's what they should have called this line from the beginning.

I'm not normally a brickheadz collector, but those koi fish are fantastic. I'm going to have to pick those up to display alongside my bonsai

I was thinking the same thing. Might go well with 31122 as well.
