Earn VIP points on LEGO purchases at Target
Posted by MeganL,
Starting today and going through January 31, 2023, you can earn 1 VIP Point for every dollar spent on LEGO sets at Target. Details can be found here.
I think this will be a great way for those who don't live near a LEGO store but have a Target close by to increase their VIP point balance, and if you have a Target Red Card, you'll get an extra 5% off.
If you're quick and do some shopping today, you can pre-order some August sets before the price increases start tomorrow. I was just able to pre-order 31132 Viking Ship and the Midgard Serpent at the "old" price of $99.99.
Happy shopping!
Thanks for member gambit_n_me for the tip.

If they ever give VIP points for purchases at Amazon, that will be a game changer!
Too bad I can't redeem them at Target too.
Woah, that's awesome! Nice to see my impulse buys at Target can contribute to points now.
Ooh, interesting. I wonder if they'll bring it to other shops for other countries.
My local Target has a number of the Ideas sets that rarely go on sale so buying them at Target with a Red Card and getting VIP points is the cheapest way to get the sets.
LEGO reward center saying receipt from 8/1, not 7/31.
Many price increases are already in effect on the Target website.
In addition to some of the ones we knew like 10280 Flower Bouquet up from $49.99 to $59.99 and 10265 Ford Mustang up from $149.99 to $169.99, there are plenty of others such as:
75341 Luke's Landspeeder up from $199.99 to $239.99
10274 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 up from $199.99 to $239.99
10255 Assembly Square up from $279.99 to $299.99
Amazon has a bunch of these now listed at the higher prices but "on sale" at the "old" prices.
How do online purchases work?
31132 is now $119.99 on the U.S. Target site. The really frustrating aspect of this is that it was never available at $99.99 in the U.S. as originally advertised. I realize the U.S. gets some favorable pricing re: exchange rates compared to other countries, but it seems inappropriate to advertise an advance price for which the item would never be available.
How does this work for buying online, or does it at all?
I wish there was an easier way to do it, like with a linking a Target Circle account to your LEGO VIP account option.
Isn't this a worse exchange rate than buying from Lego?
Well that's awesome, I wonder why it's only for a couple months though? They should do this permanently and with more retailers.
It should be pointed out this results in far fewer points than buying directly from LEGO. A $15 set from Target would get you 15 points once you upload your receipt, whereas the same set purchased through LEGO would get you 97 points.
That said, I guess it’s still better than nothing…!

Thank you for your post - I was wondering what the different rates were.
We buy quite a few polybags at Target and collectible minifigures so I guess every little bit helps. By the way Target has partnered with Ulta as well with their rewards program.
Has anyone ordered a custom minifigure from the LEGO minifigure factory? It wouldn’t come up on the iPad (it said it was coming soon) but it did on my sons device. Was able to order one, waiting on it to ship.
To put it more simply:
$100 spent at LEGO = 650 points equals $5 in VIP.
$100 spent at Target = 100 points equals $0.77 in VIP.
Unless something is incorrect with the details of this program, this is a pretty awful promotion. :o)
Does this apply to Australian Target stores? Or did we lose those?
AFAIK, VIP points on a set are fixed unless a promotion makes it that they’re doubled. That is, if LEGO offers the set at 20% off, the VIP points are not also reduced by 20%. The Target promotion is based on the dollar value so for the promotion in and of itself, discounts don’t help you acquire more VIP points than if you were to buy directly from LEGO. However, as has been mentioned, polybags are less frequently available, if at all, from LEGO directly for purchase but are often at Target. Getting anything for those is a win-win. Also, sometimes you just want/need a set and Target has it, but you’d otherwise have to wait for LEGO to restock it or whatever. Even if you’re favoring Target over LEGO directly based on price, getting any VIP points is a bonus.
I shop at Target often and with their Circle program, I can sometimes give myself ridiculous things like 50% off (or more) “coupons” based on applying my cashback balance towards a set (since the normal coupons exclude LEGO). Would be nice to get at least some VIP points on those purchases too.
BTW, the most you’ll get out of this promotion is $45 off (or whatever else you can get with 6,000 VIP points). That same dollar spend at LEGO will get you $300 off. Doot doot.

VIP points are simply on money spent.

Actually, Target member ( credit card or store card member) get 5 % off of all purchases.
So when you spend $100 on the Lego = $5 discount + 95 points.

The previous deal was 0 points from Target but 5% off with Target card. Now at least we get a few points. I'm not complaining.
Great...'cept: No Targets in Canada...lost 'em 2015, two years after they started. Now if TLG and TRU could 'work a deal'...
LEGO points plus Target Circle points on the same transaction? Bonus!
Double Bonus, paying with Target giftcards bought at Kroger so I get the ludicrous stacked bonus on gas rewards. :D
Submitted an order from today but I feel like the requirements are going to disqualify me. Target says it works from 7/31 on while Lego says 8/1 on. They say they need the DPCI but online orders don't show it. Guess I'll find out in a few days.

$0.77 is better than $0.00.
Considering I really don't buy LEGO sets from Target, but I do prefer to buy collectible minifigures there (at least until they start selling those in boxes), this is a good deal for me.

Well, sure. If you previously always got 5% Off, now it’s 5.77% Off. It’s not nothing but really, it kinda is. :o)
@collectormom:
The what now? You mean like the custom printed torsos you can design in certain LEGO Stores? I was unaware there was any sort of online version of that, unless you’re referring to a 3rd party site.
@brick_r:
I’m willing to do a prisoner exchange, and send a few of our extra Target stores if we get equal amounts of TRUs in my neck of the woods.
@ickis:
Heh. You don’t even know how to spell your own name…

It is on the LEGO shop website. I believe it is like what they have in stores. When we looked at it the other day it said it was a beta, not a lot of options yet but still looked interesting.

Meanwhile, the Target exclusive Republic Fighter Tank is still not listed on Target online.
I saw a whole bunch of the new prices at Walmart, but a lot were discounted down to the original msrp. I think the retailers may have a hard time shifting these sets also. At least until holiday season hits.
As for Target, sure it helps, but it is still minimal, so really depends on how badly you need it now vs waiting until LEGO ships it. Also I guess depends on sales. I rarely see anything on sale at Target outside of the spend $50 and get a gift card business.
Nicely done. Now I can get my Lego fix and VIP points locally.
@collectormom:
Interesting. I’ll have to play around with that at some point. What I see immediately is that the selection of heads is smaller, the headgear is almost exclusively hair (I was able to pick up some shark hats with my first few in-store equivalents), and the legs and accessories are a lot more plain. In-store uses pretty much the same selection of parts as Build-a-Minifig except that torsos are not stocked to the Minifig Factory tower (because they’re going to load a plain white torso with yellow hands into the machine when you submit your design for printing).
The deco process is also significantly different. They both have full torso designs, “stickers”, and the ability to add text, but in-store lets you draw freehand, has several seasonal and location-specific designs (we have Michigan-themed options that aren’t likely to be available anywhere else), and has a lot less sticker designs. Both allow you to change the size and angle of anything in the sticker category, so a bit of creative jiggering might allow you to fake the lack of freehand drawing in select cases.
BTW, if anyone wants to give Kevin from 21330 the white sweater he wears while sledding through the door, the tan cable-knit sweater from the Old Fishing Store is available (front and back prints) under the basic torso options, both in-store and online. The major difference is it prints the deco in tan on a white torso, so you end up with a white sweater instead of the standard tan one.
So I think we all need to address the Elephant in the room with Target. At least in some stores, they use spider crawl security devices on sets ~$80 and over with wires that surround the box and attach to the spider thing that makes loud sounds when breached. Unfortunately this tension starts to dent and crease the box on all 4 sides (since it is 3 dimensional its actually 8 sides). Protecting your item from thieves by wrecking it is not acceptable. I have a Target store far closer to me than a Lego store but I refuse to buy expensive sets with the box seriously damaged. Go figure. I get that many don't care about the box...but many of us do. This needs to be communicated to Target that if they want the AFOL collector crowds business that they need to treat us with more respect and handle their theft issues differently. How about simple security cameras on the Lego aisles? Seriously its offensive. For some reason they have yet to add the spiders to the Viking Ship that was just released and I was able to pick it up for $99.99 but there were easily 3-4 other sets I might have considered buying if it weren't for the blasted spider damage...
Nice to get SOMETHING, but 1 point per dollar is less than a 1% discount.
Gotta wonder if redeeming old receipts during double VIP periods would get us more points
They would not accept my receipt. Said, "Products listed on this receipt are not eligible for this promotion." It was set 10295. Should be eligible, and I purchased on 7/31.
Anyone else had any success with this?
