I commend the helmet and the vertical supports of a rollcage, but we're gonna need a bit more on the sides to keep this guy safe, and that's assuming the engine behind him doesn't just explode because I'll be honest, this looks like a death wish on wheels.

My dad gave one of these each to my brother and me. The middle of the tile on mine disappeared years ago, I'm not sure how. I think there might have been an issue with the paint, because it wasn't rubbed away or anything, you could see clean plastic through the hole, but my brother eventually gave me his Lego collection, and the tile from his was still fine.

That rollcage looks a little too flexible to me.

This was my first “proper” Lego set, after a few Basic sets. I was 6 or 7 years old. This one hits me hard in the nostalgia.

Turbos look like snails.

For some reason, I amassed a number of these dirt-racers while tring to rectify ebay shipping costs.
Never really planned to collect them, but now that I own them, I couldn't part with them! <3
Need to get 6551 and moc myself a Jeep Wrangler, a sports journalist and a poruguese photographer!

Looks like the guy was in Junkyard Wars and told to build a race car.

I guess they can’t all make it through astronaut school.

I love the parts you more often saw in Classic Space sets. There are two white laser guns on front, the flexible tubes, the front connector piece for the flexible tubes, the rear wheels, the helmet, and the megaphone/laser pistols on the back.

By in Brazil,

Thanks to some vintage sets I got this last week, I could build that set now.

Ummm...how many relatives DOES 'Speed' have...Thanksgiving must be a nightmare for 'Pops' and 'Mom'...:D

I mean, I guess you can challenge a snail to a race but maybe pick a different one. I hear that one’s pretty fast…

@NotProfessorWhymzi : It runs on unleaded, refined "Imaginatium"...which is fairly, but arguably not as 'common' now-a-days.:)

First he infiltrates Sugar Rush, now he’s gotten into Lego! You get back to your own game, Turbo!

Looks more like a funky tractor than a race car to me.
Maybe it's a weird racing niche? Tractor pulling is a thing, so maybe Formula Tractor?

Edit: tractor racing is apparently a real thing. But this would be a vehicle built specifically for that purpose...

Whoops, line should have read: "...which is fairly cheap, but arguably not as 'common' now-a-days"...should'a proof-read a little more...

@guachi: The chassis piece also saw use in several Classic Space sets.

Clearly remember the day back in 1988 when I went with my mom to the Polish town of Cieszyn, this little box was displayed in the shop window and mom bought it for me to make me happy.

But look how happy he is risking his life for our amusement.

Don't forget to give them a briefcase!

Flexible.....or bouncy? I bet with a little practice you can make it flip over and bounce back on its wheels again! We might need to sacrifice a few drivers for that practice though....

Don’t rest your arms, even for a second, while driving. That’s no armrest beside you.

No offense to anyone with happy memories of this set but to me it looks like someone in the company promised his or her 5 year old grandkid to put something together and it might become an approved set as a joke…then through a series of hilarious circumstances it somehow actually happened. The wheels don’t even match, I mean there’s so much I find objectionable! And in what series would this abomination race exactly? Mini drag racing? Again, no offense meant.

By today's standards, this set is junk, but 10-year-old me built this set many times and loved it.
