Overall set - Looks like I'm in the minority here, but I'd put the best set as either 10303 Loop Roller Coaster or 31129 Majestic Tiger

Under $40 set - The Tiger just eclipses this threshold, so I have to go with the 60333 Bathtub Stunt Bike or 75324 Dark Trooper Attack

Minifigure - A bunch stood out this year, including 71033-8 Animal, MK094 Dragon of the East, NJO777 General Pythor, SH835 Nebula, the NINJAGO Golden Dragons, and the minifigures in the Star Wars Advent Calendar, but since we've been waiting so long for this, I'll choose SW1216 Taun We.

For best set is was between Galaxy Explorer and Lion castle, but very sensible pricing of first one won, since 10305 very difficult set to afford. Lambo was clear choice for under 40. And with the figure, nostalgia won. All in all, a lot of reat sets, with exception of Technic, which flopped this year.

Favourite set for 2022: 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine. One of my favourite sets of all time!

Under $40: This year's Brickheadz were a nice selection, but 75342 Republic Fighter Tank and 76831 Zurg Battle were good sets for their price in my opinion

Favourite minifig for 2022: 75331 came with the greatest minifigs of the year along with Commander Cody, Omega, dual moulded 3-PO and BD-1 being introduced were definetly highlights!

Oh no! I honestly can’t nominate anything this year. I purchased 22 sets from 2022, and quite a few more from 2021, but haven’t built a single one. We moved this summer so I didn’t want to have to pack any more stuff than I had to, so nothing got built for the first half of the year. As a lover of jurassic park it is the obvious answer for me, so much excitement getting this, a bit skeptical of the T-rex’s body as it seemed kinda thin at firat but with a bit of tweakage using only the pieces in the set, mwah perfect.

Below £40, probably the James Bond db5, haven’t opened it yet but it looks proper good.

Perhaps without that nudge, people's first thought would have gone to another set they'd enjoyed this year.

Anyway, just a conspiratorial thought, and something to think about for future polls.

(A note on my own bias: though I didn't nominate it here, due to modding a different set bringing me huge LEGO-joy this year, I did buy two 10497s on release day so certainly won't begrudge its inevitable win!)

Favorite set - 10497 Galaxy Explorer : old yet fresh, at a reasonable price, with alternate builds, the nicest box art, and lots of nice parts if you're into that theme. Maybe not of interest to a wide range of people but those who are into it will love it and will feel the love that went into it. Perfectly executed. Sure to become a classic.

Favorite set under $40 - 60354 Mars Spacecraft Exploration Missions : the "build with story" concept is absolutely brilliant and the most novel and fun build/play experience I've had in years. The way it combines build, play, and creative problem solving best conveys the magic of LEGO and the kind of creativity it enables, with just enough guidance and story reward to help those who aren't inclined to go beyond the instruction manual on their own. It's like part of the LEGO Movie's message made material. You can be a master builder too.

The model itself may not be that impressive but it grows organically into something that's very much your own, in style and story, and it's also fun to see how other people's models grow. Also packs in a lot of cool parts and accessories. When I was done all I wanted to do was to keep on going, so I hope LEGO follows up on the concept with more and bigger Missions sets.

Best innovation from LEGO this year, I strongly recommend it to everyone. Do not sleep on those Missions sets!

Favorite Minifigure - CTY1409 Lunar Research Astronaut : I love that suit, the colors, the texture, the accessories, the dual molded arms, a lot of semi-realistic spacey goodness, surprisingly deluxe for City figures, I hope they use it again in the future in different colors, Classic Space-like. However my favorite detail is that they chose a wide variety of heads and hairstyles so that when you take the helmets off they look like an international crew.

The Sanctum Sanctorum because of the awesome amount of mini figures. And they just captured it so well. The Road Runner brickheadz set because I love how they were designed, and actually looking great. And Doc Brown, because of nostalgia, and again, they captured his likeness so well. The most impressive set produced this year is the Eiffel Tower, but we are talking of favorites, so:

Most of my favorites are already mentioned soooooo many times, I don't even need to look up the set numbers and names. I've liked some comments instead.

However, I'll give Holiday Main Street an additional mention, since I feel that isn't listed quite enough and I really enjoyed building that one. It will be a Christmas ornament in my house for many years to come.

The Snow Warrior also deserves a bit more love, although I'm happy to see so many mentions of The Muppets. It'll be a chore just choosing one of those as the best minifig of 2022, because they were all very good.

Favourite Set Below $40: 60324 Mobile Crane takes the spot, I was never really interested in heavy machinery or construction work but I was drawn to this set from the moment I saw it and it's one of the few fullprice purchases I made this year (and before the end of January no less :D ). Honorable mentions to 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 and 40530 Jane Goodall Tribute (although it was behind a120€ pricewall, disputing it's "Below 40$" status).

Favourite Minifigure: COL394: Birdwatcher, followed closely by VIK039: Viking Warrior. Honorable mentions go to SW1205 Mace Windu, SH815 Mighty Thor and SC102 James Bond.

There's just so much going on in this build! Colours, characters, stories, customisation - very much hoping for more of this style of set in 2023!

My top pick for 2022 is the 75336 Inquisitor Transport Scythe. It has four excellent minifigures, is a beautiful display model, has good playability, is a good scale to the minifigures, and represents good value at 10.8 ppp.

My under $40 set nomination is the 76908 Lamborghini Countach. It was a fantastic build experience with great technique, realistic geometry, great value, wonderful as a display, and excellent value.

My favorite minifigure of 2022 is SH815 Mighty Thor (Jane Foster). I admit the only reason I bought the set was for her. The figure is well printed, comes with the helmet, printed legs, and good detail. My only wish for this figure would have been some arm printing near the shoulder.

IMHO, the second award should be under $50 - so many excellent sets missing out that add insane value for extra $10 (Butthole Tiger, XL-15 - to name a few).

The mighty Bowser is in second place, I choose the lunar ice festival because of the playability but strong feeling for bowser for sure! Pricy but I was a nice surprise!

Above all, nostalgia. Sadly, nostalgia, by definition, pretty much precludes an affected person from actually forming an objective opinion, so this poll was doomed to be fairly one-sided before it even launched.

Beyond that, it's driven by the belief it offers good value relative to the price hikes seen everywhere else. The reality is, the pricing on it is probably due to the fact that LEGO realized it would be selling almost entirely on the earlier mentioned nostalgia, and it offers very little in terms of unique or highly desired parts.

Following the holidays, the shelves of the retail stores around me were wiped out of LEGO (especially Ninjago) minus some Super Mario sets and Galaxy Explorer. This is in spite of Walmart slashing an additional $25 off of its already (supposedly) amazing value. ;-)

That said, it is well done for what it is. While I don't believe that it's better than Lion Knights' Castle (owning both) I'm just happy to see classic space sets (non-Star Wars) return regardless. Both Galaxy Explorer and Lion Knights' Castle do have notable flaws keeping them from perfection as-is, but thankfully LEGO is inherently designed to let you fix those flaws if you so wish.

My issues with Galaxy Explorer are it's:

1) Far too big (it's not swooshable at all). The physical space it requires on a shelf (length and width) is close to the same as Lion Knights' Castle!
2) Missing the landing and moon baseplates, as well as the communications tower.
3) Not much fun to build (especially for the first half).

Lion Knights' Castle:

1) The minifigures, such as Majisto. I'm not sure why LEGO decided to include such a weak representation of Majisto with their poll winning, high premium, 90th anniversary flagship set, while simultaneously offering an excellent, printed, blue wizard with BAM. This was... highly disappointing for me.
2) A few, notable, design compromises, such as the lack of a wall concealing the armory or stairs accessing some of the towers.
3) There's no goat.

10497 Galaxy Explorer would be it for the large category because it's a spaceship with an actual interior with air lock. Those are usually bigger sets, so I'm not as critical of it being such while a lot of current-day sets seem to be big for the sake of being big while functionality isn't better than a compact smaller model from yesteryear. With mechs we even got stuff like the immovable legs of the Crystal King simply because it was too huge. Most functionality still is 'shoots' or 'wheels spin'. In such a case a vehicle with a deployable vehicle and interior and landing gear is just more refined. It's also a 3-in-1. Finally, compared to the monkie kid rocket the interior is just more open. The MK rocket has an entire middle section with the sole purpose of revolving around to reveal a tiny thing. Looks good on commercials, but it's not the best use of space IMHO.

This is coming from someone who started with the UFO line from 1997, so I'm not particularly nostalgic for Classic Space (in fact, I crave something Space that is not CS or MK for once!). I just like a good spaceship with substance like sets such as 5974 Galactic Enforcer.

71765 Ultra Combo mech would be it for the large category if I chose from the sets I've had experience with, and if it made any chance in the contest. We've seen several titan-sized mecha this year, but it consisting of smaller vehicles is something only seen before with Voltron. But unlike that set this is a play set and still poseable in its combined form. The torso mecha alone is formidable and poseable enough for a current-year mech, especially if you keep its central role in mind. 71765 just ups the ante of what lego mechs and lego as a construction toy can do and again justifies its size, but this time because it's actually four vehicles combined.

For the under 40 dollar category it was slim pickings this year despite the large amount of options (a lot of those are Super Mario or CMF blind bags or dots bags btw). I went with 60326 Picnic in the Park out of the... four I considered buying this year. On sale, that is. It's a wonderfully relaxing set that feels full because of the scenery, vehicle, table and varied minifigs. It's one of the few small sets this year that feel kind of generous with its content depicted. The art of making good desirable starting sets had been lacking this year, and it's at least present in this set.

Favourite set: 41714 was excellent, much better than I expected. Although 10497 and 10300 were great, I expected them to be fantastic builds so the Friends set was beyond my expectations.

Favourite set below €40/$40: 60333, although a very simple build, just puts a smile on my face every time I see it and reminded me how fun Lego can be outside of the build process. The look of 40517 and the open-ended build instructions and idea behind 60353 were great too.

Favourite minifig: COLTM04(71033-4) just captures Gonzo perfectly and the details in the parts are fantastic. Very close between it and CTY1476, the rider with the large rubber duck back tattoo from 60333.

Favorite Set: Shrieking Shack

Thematically, the Optimus Prime set, though the actual model disappointed; it was too fragile and the weight of the arms limited posability (too heavy to stay up).

But my favorite set of the year is the 71411 Mighty Bowser. Just such a perfect recreation of the character, with great posability and fun building techniques.
