Random set of the day: 4x4 Fire Truck
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 20002 4x4 Fire Truck, released during 2008. It's one of 46 City sets produced that year. It contains 56 pieces and 1 minifig.
It's owned by 521 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Huwbot's got something on his mind, I think!
Speaking of sets with no apparent red (other than trans-).
My first Brickmaster set. That was a neat little subscription program. Getting a little polybag every two months was great.
How many of the fire sets have yellow vehicles I wonder.
@Formendacil The fire extinguisher is red.
Uh oh, there must be a fire in LEGO City
Hmm... From the same city as the yesterdays fire chief judging by the lack of funding they put into their firefighters.

And I have now done some research. Of all the sets in the FIRE subtheme, this is the only one where the vehicle is not red. They did start bringing back yellow as an accent last year though.
Where are you that a fire truck is yellow, and not red?
Maybe somewhere, but where?
@GSR_MataNui:
No, but there’s about to be, when he uses that portable flame-thrower on that Power Wheels he was issued.

They are Red here. That's why I was confused and curious.
Jeep, maybe, with that windscreen. Truck? Mm, no.
If someone has way too much time and/or is really good at math, what are the chances of us getting two fire 4x4s/cars in a row?

I live in Connecticut and I remember as a kid that some towns had yellow fire trucks. New Haven actually has always had and still has white fire trucks.
Wow, now they do not need 'Fire Chief' or 'Fire dept' markings as long as its got blue and red lights on it (Though the one on the roll bar appears Orange)?

There are neon yellow fire trucks in various communities in the US. As far as I know, that’s a decision that’s not imposed at the state level, and it’s certainly not federal jurisdiction. How many cities and townships are there in the US? I thought I had once seen a collectible die-cast of a neon yellow Skywalker Ranch fire truck, but all evidence points to them being red. However, I did just discover that Chicago O’Hare fire trucks are neon yellow. So there’s one location for you.
Yes, here in the US, at least in the midwest, we have Red, Green, and Yellow firetrucks depending on the municipality.
Well...it is an 'evolution' from yesterday, except for the windscreen/shield...also, the lights should be both/all reds. At least that's the way I've seen here in Canada, and even in the US...
EDIT: Also lacks A ROOF...cost cuts from the city?

2019-2021 Fire sets all had Cool Yellow as an accent. 2022 introduced Vibrant Yellow.
Fireman Bombadil is a merry fellow! Bright white his helmet is, and his truck is yellow!

There is 7891 but that's an airport fire truck. They don't follow the same rules as regular fire trucks.
In addition to the above there are also 6440 and 6614 as fire vehicles that are not mostly red.
I feel like this guy is showing off to yesterday’s fire chief
Wow, never knew this existed. You'd have to be a real City completionist to want this now, though. Expensive sealed and no unique or particularly rare parts, and I wouldn't describe this as a legendary or iconic set.

Those are also airport fire trucks

Sandusky OH in 1976 apparently ??
That is an odd build for a city vehicle outside of the color too. It's nice the firefighter comes with a full breathing apparatus. Brickmaster sets are nice and generous like that.
Although I think calling it a truck is a bit of a stretch. It's more of a fire car if anything.

The firetrucks are yellow in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee
Go to any of the major US fire apparatus manufacturers' websites and you'll find that the vast majority of current trucks are red. But you'll also find a variety of other colors, including "slime" yellow, blue, green, and even black. Denver used to (still?) runs white rigs. Mount Horeb, Wisconsin is famous for its black rigs. There was a point in time (1970s/80s) when shades of yellow were more popular for municipal trucks, but now, airport trucks (ARFF) are the ones most commonly yellow.

Maybe a good location for the next '9-1-1' spinoff?
Short article about why fire trucks are red, and examples of some that aren’t (including relevant example from Hawaii) https://www.bmefire.com/why-are-fire-trucks-red/
@GSR_MataNui: Or huwbot wants there to be.
Ah, there's a trusty fire extinguisher. The chief forgot his so this well-equipped fireman comes to the rescue.
@brick_r:
In the US, yes, blue lights are reserved for police vehicles (though I’ve recently seen two flatbed tow trucks with blue lights, but they were marked for police towing). Red is reserved for emergency services, so police, fire, and ambulance. Anyone can put amber flashers on their vehicle. In the past couple decades, I’ve started seeing hearses split between amber and purple (the latter actually makes sense as it really catches your attention, and it’s illegal to interrupt a funeral procession in the US). And in the past five years I’ve started seeing municipal plow and salt trucks with green flashers on the back, which also really grabs your attention.
Now, police aren’t required to use blue flashers. In fact, Michigan State Police took flak for years for persisting in their use of the big gumball light on the roof of their vehicles because it was always red, which meant they never had any blue flashers that would clearly indicate they were police. In recent years, they have found a compromise. The gumball lights stay, but now they have LED flashers mounted inside the upper windshield, around the bull bars, and probably a few other places where they can be discretely mounted. Unlike local police departments, they don’t have any stealth traffic enforcement vehicles.
In Europe, blue lights are apparently common on fire fighting vehicles, so that would explain why they’ve got such a long history of marking fire trucks with blue flashers. And in the early days, it made even more sense, since an opaque red 1x1 plate mounted on an opaque red roof isn’t going to stand out the way blue plates will.
Looks a lot like 30585: Fire Patrol Vehicle , especially the side inverted slopes.

That's honestly one of the best place names I've ever heard. I didn't even know Soddy was a word
Doesn't look like 56 pieces... then again Ive never been good at guessing how many jelly beans are in a jar.

See, I was sure there were some other non-red ones. I only looked in the Fire subtheme though. Those would have come under the airport subtheme.

That depends on the state. A few allow blue to be used on fire or EMS vehicles as well. Some states also allow volunteer firefighters to use blue on their personal vehicles.
The Chicago Fire Department is famous for their single green flasher on the officer side of the rig, a practice which dates back to a maritime-loving chief for the department. Otherwise, a single green flashing light typically indicates a command vehicle at an emergency scene.
US vehicle lighting has some generalities that apply to most states, but not necessarily all. In the case of fire vehicles, the NFPA also throws some rules into the mix, which occasionally clash with state laws.
Wisconsin requires red and blue to be used on police vehicles (red on the driver side, blue on the passenger side, so in theory, you always know which way the police car is facing), and has required this since the 1980s. Flashing red and white are reserved for fire and EMS. Flashing yellow and now green for municipal snow plows. Flashing red and yellow for tow trucks on scene (flashing yellow all other times, e.g., in-transit). Flashing yellow or white can be used by almost anyone.
@DaBigE:
Sounds almost as bad as trying to figure out the over 11,000 distinct tax districts in the US.

Mine, too. I’d meant to sign up earlier, but put it off, until I learned early in 2008 that there’d be an Indiana Jones one; that gave me the impetus to finally get with the program.
Getting this set while aready knowing about 20004 coming in a matter of months, I got the impression there’d be quite a few minifigures in the Brickmaster line, but there wound up being just three during the timeframe I was getting them - this fire fighter, Indy, and Dastan (from Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). No biggie; I was still happy with the sets. It was neat to get a microscale version of a sub from Atlantis, and quite a few microscale Star Wars craft.
I honestly quite miss Brickmaster. I’d love to see it brought back, though I assume it would be quite a bit more expensive if it returned now. There’d probably also be a lot of griping now from people who, like me, joined largely because of one particular theme getting an exclusive polybag and who didn’t want to pay for all these other ones from other themes, but as someone who loves all kinds of LEGO I was personally happy with it (hence sticking with it a few years).
@Blondie_Wan:
I don't remember when I heard about the Indy set, but my first set was 20001, and I don't remember getting this thing. I got the very last set, but I also don't remember 20014, 20015, or 20017. The important thing is I got the Indy set, and all of the SW sets, and I kinda remember getting at least one of the Bionicle sets.

Obviously since I was late, I missed 20001, and I was forced out because the program was ending, so I couldn't reup to get the last two sets in the lineup, 20020 and 20021. I never bothered to get the Batbot or the Ninjago one, but I had to buy the Bounty Hunter Gunship since Star Wars is my theme, and I had all the other Star Wars BrickMaster sets. The first and only time I got an Indiana Jones set, too. Clone Wars was pumping out all the goods for me in 2008 because new stuff was finally being made in Star Wars again, so I never bothered with Indy, however, he is in the Star Wars display trying to acquire a Han Solo in Carbonite because he belongs in a museum.
