Review: 40587 Easter Basket

Posted by ,

This year has been exceptional in terms of the quality and quantity of gift with purchases offered at LEGO.com. By my reckoning, 40587 Easter Basket will be the seventh specially-made GWP available so far this year, and we are only half-way through March!

It will be available at LEGO.com later this week, free with purchases exceeding £65 / $70 / €70 from Thursday until the 9th April.

It's an attractive and substantial model that you'll be able to acquire without spending a fortune, so what's not to like!

Summary

40587 Easter Basket, 368 pieces.

An attractive GWP available for a reasonable spend threshold

  • Elaborate pot
  • Extensive foliage
  • Cute rabbit
  • None

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

The pot uses up the lion's share of the pieces, and it's an interesting build, utilising plate and brick hinges to form an octagonal core, which is then clad with curved slopes to approximate a circular terracotta pot.

A blue and yellow ribbon tied in a bow circles the pot to add interest and colour.

The bunny and foliage are built upon a relatively uncommon 8x8 round plate. Just the top half of the animal is present: its hindquarters are hidden under the 'soil'!

Three types of flowers surround the lagomorph, including red, orange and lilac tulips, and the overall effect is pleasing.

It's a sizeable gift with purchase that's both a charming model to display over Easter and a useful parts pack afterwards.

Unusually and welcomely, you'll be able to obtain it for relatively low spend threshold, and with Indiana Jones sets being released during its period of availability it should not be difficult to find something to buy to acquire it.

They did a good job hiding all of the bones.

Excellent little GWP. Might be time to get some of this years Speed Champions (not patient enough to wait for a price reduction!)

Don't give the farmer his fun, fun, fun
He'll get by without his rabbit pie
So run, rabbit, run, rabbit, run, run, run

Surprised there aren't any little easter eggs in the build or something inside. Pun not intended.

The Easter egg is that it's only half the rabbit. Or it's the Rabbit of Caerbannog from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. :))

By in Australia,

This GWP looks cute. My mom's a big fan of rabbits (and koalas, so I got her the Conservationist) AND I'll be sure to pick this one up with my Star Wars/Indiana Jones purchases.

If it hasn't sold out by the time 77013 is released, I'll have to get that one, along with 40040 and 40041 to reach the threshold.

What? Behind the cute lil' bunny rabbit?

By in Australia,

So if the zombie rabbit rising is for Easter, what on earth are they planning for Halloween?

By in Germany,

So let me get this straight, this set has over 20 more pieces than 40583 (which also mainly seems to consist of 1x1s*), yet the spend threshold is less than a third of that for the latter?
I wonder what LEGO thinks what makes the boring and ugly house so much more desirable than this cute Easter bunny.
Anyway, just goes to show how weird their decisions often are.

*Just checked, 40583 contains 127 1x1s, so more than a third of all its pieces. Going by the pictures in this review, 40587 contains far fewer 1x1s and far more substantial pieces.

Excellent GWP with a fair spend threshold (a third of recent thresholds for a similar sized set).

Midnight purchase of something for me.

And with 30643 GWP also starting on the 16th that's all your bunny and chick needs covered (plus a couple of eggs!)

Very nice set and at a nice price point! I will definitely be getting this one. First time seeing that 2x2 plate with a cut corner as well, is that a new part?

It's been around since 2017.

"Lilac tulips" - Is that an oxymoron?

Kind of wish this was available as a GWP when Rivendell first came out, so as to not have the extra Frodo and Gollum, but it does give a good excuse to buy the Boushh helmet.
