Specifically the 2023 version. Interesting to already see twenty uses, though I guess I don't pay attention to City applications.

Rare to see a 4-digit design number debut in 2023.

What's the difference?

@MeisterDad:
You won't see any 4-digit set numbers anymore, since any remaining unused numbers were retired at the same time, when they switched everything over to 5-digit set numbers. For part numbers, there are plenty that are still in use that are only four digits long, and they're primarily for internal use anyways. There's no harm in weeding out the stragglers and assigning them to new parts this late in the game, so someone in the company has been systematically plugging all of those holes the past few years. It's not being done on a company-wide basis, since you still see lots of 5-digit part numbers, but new 4-digit numbers do still show up on a regular basis.

" @MeisterDad: Especially since the other version of the piece has a five digit number, and that's been in use since 2009."

I knew I'd run across a similar situation recently, and I just couldn't recall what it was. When Exo-Force debuted, it brought us a bar with clip (48729), used for the hands on the robots. There's a 48729a variant that has a triangular clip, and a 48729b variant that has the widest part shaved down. I was browsing online PAB, and noticed the same part, except it had a noticeable difference. Where the 48729a/b versions have a center notch in the pocket, this one did not. Bricklink doesn't recognize these as being a new element (yet), but I've seen a lot of complaints about a change in material used for 48729 resulting in a weaker grip for the clip. This new element (3484) has no notch in the pocket. PAB still lists both versions, at the moment, but I just ordered a sampling of all five colors of 3484 to check them out. I actually ordered a large pile of the white ones, because white was a color that was not used for 48729 until after the material change, so none of the white ones ever had decent grip. It's a key component in some 5G cellular towers that I've built, so I'm looking forward to seeing if the new version improves the clutch.
