That's a funny looking astronaut: He's got the wrong color tanks with his outfit!

By in Australia,

This set had it all! Opening bonnet! Sun roof (x2) Ball joint! Three vehicles!

I still have no idea what the two 2x1 plates are though.

By in Australia,

And I forgot to mention- eclectic spaceman!

Oh man, this was one of my favorite sets as a kid. When I came out of my dark ages and went back through my parts. This is the one of the first sets I rebuilt still have it still love it.

They are attached to the minifigure’s feet to use as swim fins (flippers) as this set was released long before the specialized fin pieces were created. Simplistic but charming which is what I love about 1980s sets.

Illegal gripping of a plate! Wait, that's a pretty terrible "feature". This is starting to feel more like sportsball...

@Kynareth: Um...two vehicles and a 'conveyance'...as a trailer isn't really a vehicle...unless you're counting the 'little-guy' there...which would be awkward...:D

Also:...Wondering if he's working for the police, because that 'RV' look suspiciously like a SWAT van...:)

Funny you say that. I actually built a police version of this set!

By in Australia,

Got this in a bulk lot a few months ago with bonus Blacktron..

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Love this era of vehicles. I have a similar one from 6552 and a lifted pickup from 6672

If there was Blacktron in the bulk lot then this was arguably the bonus.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I appreciate the simple red, white and blue colour scheme from this era. The boat and trailer in particular look sharp to me.

The best kind of bulk lot.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

This is one of my favourite 1980's lego sets

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Hey, your lady is in the Random minifig of the day section.

Gravatar
By in Turkey,

This set has more functions on the truck than anything Lego produces today.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Oh my goodness, I was baffled by the loose 1x2 plates but it turns out they are supposed to be diving flippers and the helmet and the air tanks make up the rest of his suit... Such a creative use of pieces available!

One of mine too. I recall my mother bought it for me one day while shopping.

By in United States,

I didn't get a chance to comment on 6586-1 two days ago so I'll do it now.

In the U.S. 6586-1 was (I think) only available paired with 6578-1 in the value pack 6569-1. I don't know of any other time Lego did that, and it was especially odd considering both sets had Captain Ross and no other figures. It's interesting that the stickers in the set say 69 rather than 86.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Also one of my favorite childhood sets, I love the airplane windows (new back then) in blue and transparent red tiles as rear lights.

Luckily I could find a MISB version recently :-)

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Absolutely adorable.

If there aren't any prints/stickers and all parts are available in Stud.io I should be able to build it, import it, rig it and drive it in UE5.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'd suggest he'd be taking our RMotD on the trip with him but those vehicles are both very clearly for one person only

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Great set for its day, the best part are the flippers.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Pure 4-wide goodness!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

One of the best set from my youth. Four-wide cars are still the best IMHO. Mine is missing 40% of its pieces though. I should not have let my son play with it :)

Gravatar
By in Jersey,

Superb set. Not a lot I can say about this that isn't repeating earlier comments, though worth noting that some of the parts are quite rare, and the trans clear sunroof/side window parts are surprisingly expensive.

I think my copy was a Christmas 1986 present, and it's still intact, though oddly the minifigure's white cap quickly turned almost yellow and cracked into several pieces. Still need to replace that someday.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not even mad I can't make fun, this set looks awesome.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The car is quite beefy and well-defined for the time. The speedboat is an absolute classic design too. I swear that they've used that design all the way up to the end of the 90s!

I thought it was more doctors who were infamous for spending all their time golfing…

@Miyakan:
Now, now, “arguably” implies that one could present a compelling argument to the contrary. What you meant to say was “factually”.

Loved this.. it was one of the last sets I got as a kid.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love this set! One of the few towns sets I had growing up, as I almost exclusively collected Space sets. An excellent 4x4 SUV and the trailer and boat are perfect.

Lego was more tolerant back then..

By in Denmark,

Last set I bought as a kid before my dark age. I remember how modern I thought it looked back then. One of the first I rebuild when I came back :)

The diver's flippers. It should be in one of the pictures on the manual if I recall correctly.

The parts certainly weren’t (I don’t think I had a single transparent 1x1 round plate that didn’t have part of the base crack off). The company was less attentive to this fact, however.

Flippers. They were simpler times.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I miss the hinges for the roof panels, so much more streamlined, not like the big bulges you get now.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Great looking set! Love that era, but first time I've seen this one.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

The best set of it's size category of the 1980's and my all-time favourite. :)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Also, just realized something else: The boat's outboard motor has a "control handle"...and it shouldn't...see; the boat has a steering wheel, and one-could-assume a throttle. Those things make the "handle" redundant it best, and a hazard at worst.

The only reason those handles are placed on boat motors; is if the boat lacks a control mechanism for the motor, and the operator has do it manually...:)

My brothers and I always referred to this as the Land Rover.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@brick_r:
The boatbuilder I worked for in high school had an 18’ Mackinac boat that he built himself. It’s primarily a sailboat (double-masted, gaff-rigged), but he had an outboard motor attached to the starboard stern, just in case. I don’t remember if the outboard was capable of being equipped with a tiller, but the motor wasn’t easily accessible when you were sitting down, and the boat had a rudder that was. So, outboard with a separate rudder _is_ possible, though you’re only likely to see it on small sailboats. Otherwise, trailerable sport fishing boats often have a second, low-power motor mounted to the bow. The stern outboard would be used for travel, and the bow motor only for positioning while fishing.

In either case, they’re not really the same as having both a helm and a tiller, but offhand, those are the closest I can think of to this arrangement. Still, it’s not as jacked up as the Éloïse from 40487.

"I don't remember. I was on my way to buy my speedboat."

"Ooh, you have a speedboat?!"

The bulk lot was Duplo I am using as structure to build up a landscape, at the bottom was a layer of ‘80s era lego including Town, Futuron and Blacktron.

By in United States,

I just happened to put this set together last week from my 1980's Town collection. Even after all this time, I still remember the night I bought this set at Kmart with my paper route money - only $8.84. I still have the box and instructions, in basically like new condition with the exception of the box flap being carefully opened. I still love the 4-wide vehicles and find varieties of them much easier to construct than the current 6-wide vehicles now. Thanks Huwbot for this nostalgic memory!
