Random minifig of the day: pi115

Posted by ,

Today's random minifigure is pi115 Pirate Blue Vest, Dark Green Legs, Dark Green Bandana, Bared Teeth (Tic Tac Toe), a Pirates figure that came in one set, 852750 Pirates Tic Tac Toe, released during 2009.

Our members collectively own a total of 541 of them. If you'd like to buy one you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $4.30.

By in France,

Is that Agent Charge? I wonder how he ended up in this situation…

By in United States,

I was reading the description, and couldn't help but wonder what the teeth on this minifig had to do with the tic tac toe game.

By in Canada,

Does he tic, tac or toe? Or perhaps he's a naught or a cross?

By in Canada,

I have the set he came in. Of course, I have every Pirate 2009 set...

So, is there another Imperial in the set, or do the Pirates always go first?

Five pirates, five Imperials. Probably took less time to find the answer than it did to ask the question.

I say we call him Pills in honor of his minifig number

Hmm...a "rapper"...what? Pirates were the original rappers as (I think) the late Richard Jeni said (although could be wrong on it being Jeni)...besides: the LOOK alone...makes ya' think:D

Ordinarily, I wouldn't buy a Tic-Tac-Toe set, because the game is so simple, both to play and to create your own board. (I do have 40265, but only because it was a GWP), but I would have bought this guy's set, due to it being such a great battle pack. I don't think I knew about the set before today, though. Interesting that each pieces was a separate minifig, while 851848 just had five of the same minifig for each side. 851848 did come out two years earlier, though; I guess someone wanted to make 852750 more visually interesting. Side note: The other unique minifig from the set, https://brickset.com/minifigs/pi094/pirate-green-white-stripes-reddish-brown-legs-dark-green-bandana-smirk-and-stubble-beard doesn't have "Tic Tac Toe" in the name, unlike this guy. Huh.

This guy looks as if he's had one too many run-ins with the imperial navy!

That's exactly what I was thinking! He can be Pirate Pills...which admittedly sounds like a snake oil supplement some online huckster would try shilling

Poor minifigs like this one struggle to learn the alphabet. They're always stuck at "C"...

True. But, I had to split.

I dunno, a lot of pirates seem to make it all the way to R

Pirates 2009 was a fun theme. Short-lived and very 2009 in many ways. But come on, who doesn't love pirates?
(Actually, a lot of sailors, governors, soldiers...
other pirates...)

Too bad the Pirates and Castle themes have become so expensive on the aftermarket, although the Pirates themes have more variation in prices.

@TheOtherMike:
According to Bricklink, the instructions show pi094 with different arms and head, vs the cover art and actual minifig. It also shows up in 6239 on BL. Brickset harvests set inventories from LEGO.com, and minifig data from BL, so it appears to be a corollary to pi105.

https://brickset.com/minifigs/in-6239-1

Compare the image of the pirate minifig in the set photo vs the image of the pirate minifig that’s supposedly included in the same set.

https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=6239-1&viewItemType=M

Here you can see both minifigs have alternate versions inventoried for Cannon Battle.

So, it all makes perfect sense why it doesn’t include “tic tac toe” in the description! Sorta. Probably what happened is the pi092/pi094 minifigs were originally inventoried at BL because that’s what appears in the cover art, so the pirate was not exclusive to the tic tac toe set. Then someone noticed the heads were reversed in the actual instructions, and BL policy is to adhere to those over cover art, so new minifig entries were created, and the pirate becoming exclusive to the tic tac toe game went unnoticed.

@PurpleDave last year I got two copies of 6239 in my quest to buy one again after having sold it earlier (I put the other one on sale). As luck would have it, I discovered that there are actually TWO versions of the instructions. One had the heads switched out. And the other had the same head-body configuration as the box image (and instruction image).
So technically the listings of minifigs following the instructions are still only half right, as it depends on the print of the instructions too!

I guess Agent Charge is now Agent chARRRge!

@Binnekamp:
So one of two things probably happened:

1. The set got released, the inventory got added according to the box art, someone at BL noticed the instructions were different and updated the listing, and then someone at TLG noticed and updated the instructions to match the box.
2. The set got released, the inventory got posted, the instructions got changed, and the inventory got split to reflect two different sets of instructions.

Either way, BL rules kinda demand alternate minifigs on this one, if there are two different versions of the instructions, and they define minifigs strictly by the instructions.
