Sounds like another lego phone app that unless you've got the latest smart phone, you can't use. Plus, sounds like its completely random as to who wins or not, given its just scanning a single lego brick.
Less than 10 countries can participate? I thought LEGO is all about inclusivity these days :P
So it's take a picture of a LEGO piece and maybe win a prize??

So which is it? No limit? Or 1 per week?
AR scan scam.
I thought this company was about a sophisticated interlocking brick modeling system and incredibly rare, exclusive minifigures. Selling-out to the digital domain.
First, they want to pay me $18/hr to sit around, tediously scanning my old instructions so they can harvest my data? Now, they want to harvest information about my bricks and super-secret storage solutions?
Can you use this AR app to find info about their last AR app fiasco? Are there any Hidden Side ghosts in this machine?
What happens if I use the app to scan the golden bricks I already have?

Seems like you can try as much as you want to find a golden brick, but once you find one, you can only enter a given contest with such once per week. Seems like you could find more than one per week, but use them for different purposes/contests. At least, that’s how I read it…
Why?
Looks like the only people actually becoming millionaires are in South Korea
Now if you'll excuse me, I have about 87,000 parts to scan :P
$9,000 does not equal $1million.

"worth of points" I assume it's what 1M points offers in money value for selected countries ?

It's probably 1,000,000 Insider Points, or whatever they're called.
If I wanted to become a millionaire, I'm pretty sure I would start by finding myself another hobby...
I didn’t get it. I scan, got this 2*4 brick as golden, got a code that I completely forgot to copy, then what?
Anyway, this AR works like a sh*t, most of the normal bricks are not registered in the database! (And I’m talking about 2*2, 2*4 bricks only!
Can anyone get this to work? I tried it, but it can't focus enough to see the Lego marks it seems to be searching for.
Is this supposed to be live already? I tried scanning maybe 20 different bricks—including several basic 2x2s and 2x4s—but received the "Oops! This doesn't look like a system Lego brick. Try a different brick" error every single time.
PS, I hope they fix the "Lego" typo in that error message. =D
What a load rubbish, just tried to get it to scan a 2x2 & 2x4 in red - absolutely nothing. I swear they don’t have anyone try these things out before they go live

Oh, wait. I don't get to participate, because I live in a fictional country below sea-level. Oh well."
Yeah... Netherlands... Nether... lands. Sounds made-up. Like a part of some Minecraft territory.
Dutch... sounds like a cool dude at the end of the bar. Definitely not a people. Can't be. ;)

Same here. Tried it on 3 different bricks, with or without the light. Told me they weren't real Lego, I guess.
Different terms for different countries apparently!
Quote from the dutch website:
In aanmerking komende landen:
Canada (met uitzondering van Quebec), Estland, Frankrijk (met uitzondering van Franse overzeese departementen en gebieden en het Vorstendom Monaco), Griekenland, Ierland, Letland, Litouwen, Luxemburg, Nederland, Oostenrijk, Slowakije, Verenigd Koninkrijk, Verenigde Staten, Zweden en Zwitserland.
In case you missed it, other countries are listed here.
However, it fails to select anything other than my wide-angle camera and I can't scan anything. The QR code on the page is also really lousy quality. How did they not notice this at marketing is beyond me.

You're thinking way too hard about this. All it does is check to see if it's real Lego or not. if yes, then you get access to the random number generator to see if you get a free digital comic book or whatever.
It can't tell the difference between one brick and another.

I would agree with that assessment: I've just tried it on a bunch of pieces and it seemed it would not recognise them unless there was a visible logo on it.
Not worth your while unless you like colouring in...
Attempted to scan 20 different bricks. All told me they were not lego. gg.
It won't recognize a razorsharp image of a 2x4 brick. I've tried three different colors by now.
Somebody at QA was asleep when they decided this was an acceptable thing to go live with. So far:
- QR code on the website is malformed is barely scannable (not impossible though!)
- You can't switch camera's so if it decides to use a wide-angle camera you can't use it
- You can't scan Lego bricks or it is really hard, honestly a 2x4 where you can read the logo on 7 out of 8 studs on your phone screen should just work.
By all the comments you'd think this is an exercise you all were forced to do. It's an added bit to the program some might find fun. If you don't like it don't do it. It's not hard. And they didn't take a feature away from you to implement this...nor the set registering for points. Honestly I wonder how some of you get through your day-to-day...
I started looking for big images of Lego online to allow my wide-angle lens to catch a sharp image. I actually "won" a prize. It was a digital download I got a code for.
Only... it didn't work when I entered it at the next page...
There is a message that they are "in the process of building new rewards" but jeez, talking about giving people a crappy experience...

We're having fun deriding this silly, horribly-implemented, digital marketing scheme. Do you have as much fun apologizing for Lego?
I also could not get the website to scan any bricks, so I submitted an issue to LEGO IT.

It looked like a fun promo, but the fact is that it's very much broken. Exactly why are we not allowed to complain about this? I can read here other people have the same experience, so it confirmed it's not me.
It is just an annoyance that we are commenting on in the comment section of an article about it. That's what it's meant for.
It's quite unnecessary to start claiming everyone here is obsessed.

I cry a lot but mostly do ok, thank you for asking.
Wow 0.13€ worth of Insiders Discount for every set I scan. I tried to scan a small set released this year but it has no QR code. The codes are only on newer style building instructions with the plain white covers
Looks like the "not a system brick" message should probably say "there's nothing 'hidden' in this brick". So far I've "won" three times, although I forgot to copy/paste the code for the first one, so I wasn't able to claim it.
Some observations: Each winning brick has been a SNOT piece, except for the time I won while my phone was sitting on my desk with a completely black screen showing. So, it's fairly random.
Also, if you win a digital download, you win a specific digital download, and you have to select the downloads until you find the one that you won, which will have a "claim" button at the bottom of the wall of text.
So the scanning may win you a useless digital download or 1 million points? Or is the points a different contest?
More info in the terms and conditions they say. Well, the conditions linked on their site are for a different sweepstake...
So, the rich get richer.

I tried, but Lego wouldn't let me into their server room.
Scanning barely works, and when I did eventually brute force a code, redeeming it threw an error message.
2x4 brown brick nice and close, far away, upside down, at weird angles, dead center straight-on. If it can't identify a 2x4... oof

Oh well, I'm just glad it's not just my 2x4 bricks the AI cant regonize. Not a single one out of 6 different colours, upside down or not :(

Working as intended.
Has anyone found the page on the Lego site where you can see which sets you have registered already ? That would be quite useful if it existed.
At this point LEGO should offer a public apology and take the whole thing down.
Another comment: why even bother with this Treasure hunt for non-participating countries? I’ve just realised that I’m in Spain and can’t use this code anyway.
@StyleCounselor
To get US$18/hr you would need to scan just about 120 instructions per hour (exactly one every 30 seconds). You would have to have all your parts very well laid out to achieve that speed. Very optimistic goal I must say. ;-)
Watching Lego and technology is like watching an ETERNAL toddler beginning to walk. A (human) toddler will fall many times but eventually it will walk and go on with its life. Lego and technology is a constant, incessant tripping fest with no end in sight. You can't fault them for trying and trying again but eventually you would expect to see some sort of progress (even a tiny little bit of progress, the smallest little sliver of progress, anything?).

Still an AR thing though which are notorius for not working right from Lego unless you've the latest phone.
I've owned a physical VIP card for years, but it's in a rather sorry state. So I thought I'd download a digital card to my phone's wallet. However, it's driving me crazy because I can't see how you download the card.
If I go to the Insider Reward Centre and tap on 'digital member card' it tells me to go to the Insider Reward Centre and follow the 'easy steps' to download the digital card. OK, but in the Insider Reward Centre I can see no 'steps' (easy or otherwise) telling me how to download the card. Could someone please tell me how to download the card before I throw my phone at a wall in frustration?
Can't scan a simple 2x4 brick with this app at launch. Has Lego ever published an App recently that worked without patching?

Ooh, my favourite cocktail! .Nothing starts the weekend like a bit of R&R (Ribena and Rohypnol).
Unsurprisingly, the latest LEGO app is not a big hit and has functionality issues... I thought the rebranding of VIP as Insiders signified a new start with infinite possibilities. It was the tag-line under the new logo that really sold it to me.
"The future is bright, the future is 'ders."
I expect my boss won't take too kindly to me using my work phone to take loads of photos of LEGO bricks (not after the last time), so I'll need to wait until my son brings our iPad back from Turkey before I can test this out for myself.
It's surprising to me that "there is no limit on how many times a day you can hunt for bricks". Sounds a bit OTT, and an invitation to kids to get obsessed with endlessly spinning the roulette wheel of RNG. On the face of it I'm a little uncomfortable with that.

Oh, I was exaggerating. The Netherlands isn't below sea-level! Only one third of the country is. Glub.
Lore Time? We kind of object to it when people call it "Holland", since that's just the name of two of our provinces, but in truth, that's Dutch for "Hollow Land" or "Low Land" ("Concave Land", if you're nasty). So technically it's still correct since it lines up nicely with "Nether Lands".
Smarter tribes would have moved on, but not us. We decided it would be more productive to push back 1,335,000,000 km3 of ocean instead. We're not exactly smart, but we sure are tenacious."
But it does work for the Netherlands. For some reason the English terms exclude countries that are present in the Dutch terms.
So you could have participated if the application worked as it should. But it doesn't...
So... Yeah...

It's a bit confusing because there's two things going on at the same time:
You can try for the random draws of 2,000,001 garbage prizes (colouring pages, comics, torso prints in Lego Tower) as often as you like.
The money / 1,000,000 VIP points (i.e. the actually interesting reward) is also awarded once a week, per country, and you can get one entry for that each week (by "winning" one of the garbage prizes).
speaking of lego insider, i am curious, do the points from instructions get doubled on vip days?
I hope all y’all complainers don’t play the game at all. You wouldn’t want to be hypocrites.

It worked via chrome browser on a 6 or 7 year old generic android tablet for me. A first for LEGO.
Whether it is worth the time doing it though, that is another matter.

Definitely not true. I scanned enough to get a $100 coupon and my sets go back decades (although it seems that four or five years old is the limit). The annoying part was the repeated math equations you had to solve, but I found my way around that. It took me around 2.5 hours to scan and I just put on a movie and went at at.

I couldn't manage to do it.
And I was using a Galaxy S23. One of the best smartphone cameras on the market. Still couldn't focus and at a distance (when in focus) the scanner doesn't read either because it's too far away.
This must've been coded conveniently for only a certain phone, that someone that's a friend of someone at LEGO has... :P

Not yet - but it's just a matter of time......
Refuses to run. Keeps telling me to give it access to motion sensors, even though (a) it never asks for permission for that when it starts up and (b) the browser has that permission anyway.
OMG! This hurts my brain just reading about it. Why can’t Lego just Do Lego?
What a lot of Rubbish. That *hit is not working at all. I rather keep on building with real Bricks in my Hands than using this useless Shi*e. Another failed Attempt by LEGO to connect between the real World of my Hobby Room and the Digital World. I am thankfully for the Brickset Database and that is all I need
I found a gold brick already!
Tried on several red 2x4 bricks against a neutral background and it failed, as other users noted. Succeeded on a blue 2x2x2 slope in the same conditions; logos' text was running vertically. Both bricks have a moulding pip on one stud, so maybe the system just failed to read the text on more of the studs on the 2x4 as others suggested?
Ironically, in Chrome I ran into the motion sensor issue that @Joefish described, but it worked fine in Firefox despite it not being on the list of recommended browsers...
Acquired one duck .jpeg, so woo, I guess ;P
Waste of time. Scanned a Lego brick and it said that it’s not part of the Lego system. The scanner takes 30+ seconds per brick.
Probably won’t bother…
I figured they would want us to scan all of our bricks to know what's there. That would take a lifetime for actual bricks looking at the time it takes to recognize just one brick.
Fortunately I have a large 2 x 4 storage brick, which works pretty well. Otherwise it will likely only work properly for certain phone cameras if you're lucky.
Even then, only upon entering the activation code for a free download, I am told that the code is not valid.
Edit: there could be two causes for the problems: either the developers all have an iPhone 15 Pro that will manage to identify a LEGO brick, or they just forgot to test the app before release. Which mistake is easily made, so we can't blame them for that.
Who even has a device capable of this crap? (Answer: not many.)
Spent about an hour scanning a pile of Lego bricks with my old iPhone 11 and I seem to have unlocked every single one of the 12 available rewards (the Winning Moments), so looks like I can stop. I did discover a few interesting things:
1. Scanning the same Lego brick over and over again yields a different code each time
2. Once you have redeemed a specific reward, future codes for that same reward stop working
3. The Lego comics are only available in 6 days' time
4. Only one entry per person per week is counted towards the grand prize draw, so you really only need to scan one brick a week unless you want to unlock all the other rewards
5. You can just build a stand for your phone so it scans bricks without you having to awkwardly hold it for ages.

OK, but in the Insider Reward Centre I can see no 'steps' (easy or otherwise) telling me how to download the card. Could someone please tell me how to download the card before I throw my phone at a wall in frustration?"
I have a feeling this is a broken redirect and this graphic is the placeholder you (we) see
This app is simple. You can scan just an image of a LEGO brick from a picture or even from a computer screen and it will pop with a winning code. Pulling out bricks and/or examining piles is totally unnecessary.

check your digital wallet.
I had the same issue until I checked and it replaced my VIP digital card with the INSIDER card.

Very astute points!!

Once I got a digital download on the first one, I decided I wanted the Classic Duck one so I kept playing until I finally got it. That meant a lot of code rejections, but I copy-pasted them into a Gmail draft and am sharing them here for other Bricksetters, first come first serve.
Scanned the same 2x2 blue brick on a white piece of paper in the same spot each time and averaged two codes per minute. Just find good lighting and an angle that works once and it will work with ease.

Well,
Scanning instruction QR codes with camera app directed to Lego Builder app which just showed title screen and ended! Removed Lego Builder app and registration now works as intended, i.e. slow and clunky. O.K. for 1 or 2, but not great for 100s. Did a boxful for £3.20 worth of points!
Scanning bricks, hopeless.
Most unrecognised.
A couple worked.
Some said not Lego, but then gave a code anyway.
Some said 'this code is not available' when entered.
Some emailed non existent code to use in your next order.
Finally ended up with 7 out of the 8 magnificent, priceless, downloadable JPGs!
Seriously Lego, you can't do IT. Sack your IT department, or if it's outsourced, look elsewhere!

Did a boxful too, but it appeared last night only 25 actually went through to the Insider account, and this morning only 21 are showing now. Oh well.
For the Treasure Hunt, repeatedly scanning the one 2×4 brick which seemed to work eventually caused the phone to overheat, and only one code we revealed (for a Colourful LEGO Bricks Digital Download) actually appears to have been added to the account. However, the link to the download doesn't work. To their credit, CS have said they'll honour the physical prize the boy found (but where the code was missing), but they don't know what it was supposed to be.
As fans on here, we're probably a bit more likely to be amongst the first to try new things and have high expectations, but this does seem somewhat lacking and as others have noted, another imperfect and ill-advised attempt at using tech, when it is the simplicity and reliability of LEGO which makes the product so compelling.

Same here. Tried it on 3 different bricks, with or without the light. Told me they weren't real Lego, I guess."
I should try scanning one of my many types of alternative bricks.
Perhaps they'll work. ;-)
At least some of them also have names on the studs that the app could misread as LEGO. After all, if it misreads LEGO itself, anything is possible...

I don't think they were meant to be a physical prize. I got around 10 of those emails, seemingly corresponding to each 'this code is not available' message I got. I'd guess that CS will just give you a bunch of VIP/Insider Points as compensation... they're pretty good at that!

They are available instantly. But they then get locked for 7 days, so you can only claim one of each per week.
Although they really aren't worth bothering with one, let alone more copies.
The comments section was such a joy to read from top to bottom. Not with one but with two cups of delicious, hot coffee…yum, yum.
How do you successfully register a set then? I followed the instructions to photograph a QR code but all that seems to do is open up the manual in the Lego Builder app. Can’t see how you link that to a Lego.com account, what am I missing?
"check your digital wallet.

I checked my wallet. Not there. In the end I just used Google Wallet to scan the barcode on the back of my VIP card. That worked. The barcode and my VIP/Insider number are now in Google Wallet in my phone. If I go to buy something at a physical Lego shop, I presume all I need to do is present them with that barcode on my phone, and the Insider points will be added to my account.
I've not yet attempted scanning QR codes on my instructions or scanning bricks as part of this 'Treasure Hunt' thing. I expect I'll encounter problems, just as other people here have. Why do Lego screw up so often when it comes to IT? Why can't they employ people who are proficient in IT?

If you scan the QR code in the Lego Builder app, you should get the option to Start Building and the option to Earn Points below that. If not, you might need to update the app to the latest version.

Yes, all mine said that too. It will be interesting to see if they offer anything physical... might have to fish all mine out of the recycle bin!

I just imagined the scene with the Beagle Boys trying to dive into Scrooge's horde, but with the money replaced with Lego bricks. And instead of conked heads, it was all laceration and blood and gore, and this stopped being a pleasant mental exercise.
Plus, the Lego got scratched in the process. Ugh. Some things are just too horrible to imagine.

Thanks for answering, no luck unfortunately, and that's after trying on both an Apple and an Android device. Perhaps I'm in a part of the world that isn't offered the Earn Points option.
I thought I might try it, although I don't normally participate in 'games' such as these. Scanned the QR code & was informed I had to have the Safari browser. So I switched to it and pasted the URL. There followed a series of prompts necessitating allowing access to various camera functions. Then I had to locate a brick & photograph it. Gave up at that point. What a ridiculous concept.
I tried it, gave up after about 5 minutes.
We’ll after scanning 10 different bricks which it claimed weren’t Lego, I finally zoomed on one so that it filled the whole box and it worked. I got a code for digital download, woo hoo! I clicked the link but then you need to enter the code, luckily the link was in a new window so I was able to retrieve the code. I entered the code and it said congratulations. And that’s it, no digital download. I guess I’ll just have to download a picture off of Brickset and pretend that’s my prize.
So much fun!!!
On the bright side, I’ve registered 3 sets fairly easily. Just need to do another 30 and I’ll get $5.
Just wondering, if I consider this a job can I sue Lego for not paying me minimum wage?

This whole ordeal sounds about as much fun as getting a root canal done without any anesthetic.
(Read: Not fun at all)
The brick scanning has certainly been made a lot more tolerant. Now easily accepts the most blurry, shaky and poorly lit brick images, my favourite 'prize' being the blueprint Jeep jpg download! (but I'll change my mind when I win £7000 worth of points!)
Scanning instructions mainly showed that the majority of my built sets are pre-QR code (600 points gained in total).
However MISB sets from 2019 onwards should achieve another 10000 points, which is quite nice to have as a buffer to scan in case a 'must have' insider reward comes up that I don't have enough points for.
I've scanned a few instruction books using the app but nothing showing up on points reward. After doing maths question I get a Join us and Log in blue buttons. clicking on log in just brings me back to same screen.
BRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICKTASTIC!

Me too, thought I'd try it through a VPN which has now at least brought up the Earn Points button, but all that does is redirect to a "download the Builder App" landing page on lego.com, or in other words going round in circles.
On the plus side, I have managed to win all the Treasure Hunt rewards simply by photographing recent Random Parts of the Day on Brickset.
