This was the first set I worked on! I started from the ground up, with the idea that this would connect to 71818 and 71814. I wanted to bring a new play feature for the price point and built a lever into the model to send any unprepared ninjas flying as the ground explodes beneath them.

One of my first two LEGO® City sets! This was developed in tandem with 60447, so I was able to share many learnings between the two. I'm originally from Southern California, and though I don't surf myself, it was nice to work on something so close to home. I'm so excited that I was able to include a shark and bring back the rescue can element with this set. Design wise, I think I'm most proud of the roll cage. It was a challenge to find a design that gave the desired look, while also being sturdy enough for play, but I'm very satisfied with the final model.

One of my first two LEGO® City sets! This was developed in tandem with 60453, so I was able to share many learnings between the two. From the inception of the new sunroof element, the idea had always been to reuse it for the opening hood of a car or truck. This was, however, easier said than done, as the "glass" can’t be opened from the top. This model went through dozens of iterations exploring how to open the hood. These early models all opened from the front grill, but the winch was always in the way. One day I realized that the snorkel on the side looked an awful lot like a lever and created a new version capitalizing on this. After a few more iterations, and some very helpful ideas from the team, I was able to create a few more iterations to simplify the design to a 6+ appropriate build.

Bricklist notes
I have been a massive train fan all my life, so getting to work on this set was a dream come true. My favorite thing about the station is its sense of age. The oldest part of the station is made of stone bricks with ornate detailing around the windows, with a grand glass canopy and clock tower, but over time it’s been retrofitted and upgraded with modern features like the glass elevator and the passenger seating. There’s even a new ticket machine that ties in with the one from the recent tram (set 60423).
I’m really proud of all the detail I was able to pack into this model. I especially love how the payment terminal at the coffee shop is able to swivel. The nest in the clock tower is also a fun little secret and uses a recolored flower element. It was a bit of a challenge to build that in a 7+ way, but I like the way it breaks up otherwise grid-like stud orientation of the station’s footprint. The model also features 2 Technic bricks in the base so that it could be connected to other sets like the Scrapyard (set 60472) or City Towers (set 60473).
This set also features some exciting new elements. The crutch is a really nice new element, and I made sure to include a place in the control room for the signalman to put them when he’s sitting down. The pigeons are also a highlight. LEGO animals are so cute and add so much life to a scene. Speaking of adding life, I think the graphics really complete the station. My friend Brian worked on the graphics for this one and I just love what he came up with. I especially love the nod to the old 9-volt speed regulator in the control room sticker, the tour bus ad by the bench (set 60407), and the references in the train arrival board behind the seats on the second platform.
