Featured BrickList Compiled by Bjarke. Updated 17 September 2025. Contains 146 sets.
Hello. My name is Bjarke Lykke Madsen and I have Designed models for The LEGO Group for more than 28 years.

I have a background as a Mechanical Engineer. After my studies, I resumed my childhood interest in building with LEGO Bricks as my hobby. Later, I applied for the job as LEGO Designer and began 1. August 1997.

Over the years I have worked on more than 30 different LEGO themes and designed - or co-designed - more than 140 LEGO sets.

It has been my pleasure to work together with so many wonderful and multi-talented creative people within model-design, graphic-design and sculpture-design. All of them are great colleagues, and I am proud to call many of them my very best friends.

It´s important to emphasize, that making a new LEGO set and bringing it to the marked, is a very complex process that involves the skills, knowledge, experience and enthusiasm from hundreds of LEGO employees in many different departments: Design, Marketing, Building Instruction, Production, Packaging, Distribution and more. The goal is to make each LEGO set the best possible building- and play experience for our customers, and it only becomes possible, because everyone is working together to achieve this.
For this reason, and because I am a very strong believer in fairness, I have credited the colleagues, that I have worked together with on the various sets.

When new LEGO sets (that I have designed) have been released, I will continue to update this list with information which I hope will be interesting to LEGO enthusiasts of all ages.

    Enjoy & kind greetings - Bjarke :)

When the entire project team met for the first time, each of us was asked: "What do you look most forward to, regarding working on LEGO The Hobbit and LEGO The Lord of the Rings?" Being a fan of the books and the movies since 2001, I replied: "This is more than work. This is a honor to work on."
I still believe that.

We began this journey by designing key-scenes from Lord of the Rings. Helms Deep was one of the most prominent scenes and was chosen to be the biggest set for the first launch. Martin Klingenberg designed a sketch, and I designed a bigger version of that before moving on to the final model. Later we came up with the idea of combining this set with set 9471. That feature would allow customers to extend the defence wall and to get more Uruk-Hai´s warriors and more Rohirrims. This was highly appreciatecd by the fans.

Graphics was designed by Djordje Djordjevic and the Rearing Horse was designed by Gitte Thorsen.

A special thanks from me to Sir Peter Jackson and Sir Richard Taylor and everyone else involved in making these wonderful movies. You guys are my heroes :)

My personal favorite scene from The Fellowship of the Ring, is Gandalf´s meeting and conflict with Saurman, so designing this LEGO set was especially fun for me.

Bricklist notes
Working on this this LEGO set was a good chance to design Elven architecture, and I also got to design a new LEGO brick in the process: the Gothic-looking bow. When I made the sketch on paper, I quickly realized, that this new LEGO brick would allow people to include Gothic bows in future LEGO models, so I did everything I could, to make it as generic as possible for that use.
And that was great because only three months later, we ended up using so many of them in The Tower of Orthanc model.
Another cool thing to mention is, that the scene in the movie take place in the autumn, and so came the chance to finally include the leaves in autumn colors. I hope, fans like that.

I had build The Tower of Orthanc three times before. First time was purely for my own amusement. That version was 80 cm high and only based on my memory from the movie, and therefore not very accurate. Second time I build it digitally. That version was 200 modules high = 192 cm, so 10 cm higher than myself. Third time was when we began the project. At this point, I did not dare dream, that we would ever make it as a high price point, so for fun I made a 50 cm version that would fit a 69,99 dollar price point.
Marcos Bessa designed a sketch model that would fit a 199,99 dollar price point, and that model was the starting point for the next version.

When the time finally came, where we should design this for real, Hans Henrik, Jordan Scott and me thought it would be cool to team-up and design it together. We got Green light for this by our Creative Lead Nik Groves and for practical reasons, we decided to split the work between us. I made level 1, 2 & 3 of the tower including the basement/dungeon, the entrance hall and the throne-room with the balcony. Hans Henrik made level 4 & 5 including the alchemy room and the library. Jordan Scott made level 6 & 7 including the secret treasury room, the top of the tower and the Ent. And please note: the Ent is not Treebeard. We chose to include a "generic" Ent.

It´s fair to say, that the most fun part of designing the Tower of Octhanc, was the interior. In the movies we only see the throne room and the library, but obviously we needed to include way more interior, when we had a model that tall. That gave the three of us a lot of creative freedom. Some interior was based on quotes or other information from the books or the appendix, and some interior we made up ourselves, based on what we thought, would fit the universe the best. This way we also hoped to add new assets to the LOTR universe. What an honor indeed :)
