Bricklist notes: My first LEGO Icons set after leaving Star Wars - and it's another spaceship! So much for doing something different ...
On the other hand, I always wanted to do a NASA set. The one liberty I took (color-wise) is the dark tan color on the launch pad. There is reference for this though: one image showing the top of the launch pad covered with dirt, probably sand. Otherwise, NASA did a great job with the color balance already. We changed the shaft inside the launch tower to dark gray for more contrast.

Bricklist notes: The course for my 5th (and last) Star Wars advent calendar was pretty much set with the recent anniversaries of Clone Wars and Episode VI. After a brief visit to Disney content for the first couple of doors, we quickly return to Clone Wars and Return of the Jedi-arcs. "Arc" here means consecutive models and characters from the same movie or era, with the usual expected (or unexpected) seasonal specials thrown in.

Of course. there is a new seasonal GNK variant with a (generic non-licensed) reindeer Gonk. This year we have a pit droid picking up the role of Santa C. The christmas sweater is also back. And even after so many years of advent calendars there are still some premieres - models appearing for the first time in a calendar, like the hailfire droid or the Endor shield generator dish.

In general, Star Wars calendar mini builds have grown more complex and advanced over the years (while the way of showing how to actually build them has not). We intentionally moved the more difficult models to weekends, so that maybe a parent will be available to help out younger builders. I have a strong feeling future calendars will focus more on the age mark of "6+" with easier, simpler builds rather than trying to please adult fans and collectors. Maybe it's the right thing to do, maybe not. But I really don't know, I haven't looked up the next calendar on purpose, and it is out of my hands now anyway. We will find out together next year!

Bricklist notes: From my first day on the Star Wars team my mission was clear to me: put up concept models for the decision-makers to walk past and notice, and hopefully add them to next year's product line-up. So it isn't always just another X-Wing or TIE-fighter. A brilliant and sound plan, right?

Except it didn't work! It just isn't compatible with how product portfolios in general are being put together. And even when one rather uncommon item made it on the ideas-list, there are hundreds of reasons why it wouldn't be a good fit this year. Or next. TIE-Bomber, anyone?

Then amazon called and asked for an exclusive Star Wars product, their first. But it was already very late in the development process, too late really. So the search was on for a) an appropriate item, preferrably from recent content, and b) a designer who would run it through the entire design process in half the time. And there it was, sitting behind my desk: Darth Vader's castle. The game was on!

Amazon was even open to go for a higher price point than my concept would have required. Music in my ears! Add Vader's TIE fighter? Check! Add a hangar for it? Check! Add Vader's aide? Che ... err. Nope. LucasFilm had another idea. Unbeknownst to me, Vader's castle would feature in some VR-experience where the player would infiltrate the castle wearing some blue armor. So, this is really the story how YOU, the player, became part of this particular set. Ready, player 1!
