I was honored to be entrusted with this brief and had a lot of fun bringing it to life. Chris McVeigh‘s rose from the dried flower centerpiece was an impressive but daunting jumping off point as it was up to me to tweak his design and create two more variations that were cohesive.

Inspired by the feeling of sticky fir sap on my fingers after picking out a tree, the taste of orange wedges (chocolate and otherwise) by a warm fire, and the smell of cinnamon infused cider wafting through the air. The printed orange slices with graphics by Ashwin Visser are my favorite part.

The latest model I had the pleasure to work on is The LOTR ‘The Shire’. It was a dream project to be a part of and I had so much fun bringing it to life with the help of some incredibly talented colleagues.

Ashwin Visser and Nathan Davis knocked it out of the park with their graphics work. I especially love the printed fabric tent (a collab with our awesome textiles team) and the face print on Frodo that includes Elijah Wood’s gap teeth.

Matéo Dupurer designed two awesome new elements for the set: a small round window (x4) and a new skirt element, which I think will both be super versatile in the future.

I should also mention that I inherited some excellent sketch models from LOTR veterans Antica Bracanov and Mike Psiaki which helped establish a strong direction for the final model.

Some of my favorite Easter eggs are: the unprinted hedgehog as an oversized pinecone (these are scattered throughout the film set to establish scale), the minifig portraits of Bilbo’s parents (based on Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh in the film), and the inclusion of a spoon and an umbrella - both nods to Bilbo’s passive aggressive gift giving before his departure (gifting these items to people who regularly made off with them)

This was a fun one to work on considering that my first day on the job was spent sitting in on a build-through for the Tranquil Garden.

My favorite part has to be the two new birds we included - a European Robin and an Eurasian nuthatch. Crisy Dyment worked tirelessly to get the graphics just right, and we pushed hard to get printing on the bird’s belly for the first time ever (essential for depicting a robin)

Another essential collaboration was with the LEGO Friends team, who generously allowed us to use their brand-new willow leaf element as a focal point in the model.

ARE YOU READY KIDS??!!

This project began 2 years ago as a concept model, and I got the chance to develop it into a final product last year

What a perfect excuse to dive back into my childhood. Such fond memories watching as a kid on weekend mornings and endlessly quoting episodes with my brothers.

A handful of us on the Icons team started a ritual of watching an episode every Friday STRICTLY for research. We had so much fun coming up with references and Easter eggs together

Couldn’t have done it without the help of Caithlin Marievoet and Matéo Dupurer who designed the new elements and Aswin Visser who did the graphics. Together, they made some major upgrades to the characters, and helped bring conch street to life!
