Star Wars visual dictionary minifig

Posted by ,

DK has revealed that the minifigure on the cover of the updated DK Star Wars Visual Dictionary will be a yellow-skinned Luke Skywalker, said to "help to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars Theme".

I'm a bit underwhelmed to be honest...

That's it? That is odd.

I thought the reason for going to fleshies was to avoid any accusations of racism. LEGO wants to reopen that can of worms ?

By in Canada,

I'm not super-excited either, to be honest. It is my opinion that the minifigures today are much better than the minifigures back then, so while I appreciate the idea of a "throwback" minifigure, it's kind of underwhelming considering that previous exclusive figs were high-quality new designs that could be integrated seamlessly with the Star Wars sets of their day.

Still, I haven't collected Star Wars sets or figures in such a long time. So the figure wouldn't have been a huge incentive for me to get the book either way.

By in Germany,

Funny, I just recently found my 1999 Endor Luke and was surprised by his yellow flesh. I had forgotten that the first SW figures were yellow...other than Lando...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was hoping it would be the 1999 chewbacca, but I like this.

By in United States,

I am disappoint.

If this is the case, I'll be seeing if I can pick up a library edition of the book. I don't need a extra 1/4 inch of space being taken up on my bookshelf for a old LEGO fig I already have several of from back in the day.

That fig is terrible. He came in a ton of sets, so its not like he's rare. The figure is one of the only reason I buy these books, and this one just isn't worth it. Very disappointing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A throwback figure makes sense. But at the same time, I prefer the Licensed skin tones.

I don't have the original book, so I had planned on getting this new one. But I'd much rather have the older figure. I really don't want to have to buy both since this is just an updated version of the original. Oh well, I guess.

Why does racism get raised as a comment with each new figure release?!

City minifigs are still yellow!

Yellow or not, it's disappointing if this is true. It's a very 'ordinary' minifig.

By in United States,

I dunno...I kind of like the retro concept. But then again, I'm happy when there's a unique figure in a book I can remove and display as well as when the figure is best left inside the cover and it doesn't look like the book is missing something.

I like what ytjedi said about a "library edition" though. Those books do take up a lot of shelf space for nothing.

not bespin luke. not a boba fett with arm & leg printing. not a force ghost minifig of yoda or ben. UGH.... instead we get yet another refresh of this minifig.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What a total let down, there are so many other special figures they could have done.
Just like the sets they are just recycling old things and occasionally throwing in a new figure or two. How much longer can they drag out the Star Wars theme?

By in United Kingdom,

Time to have my say. I'm disappointed, to say the least. I myself don't have one, but it could easily be bricklinked. Those that have multiples must be kicking there selves right now. This in general may have been a wasted opportunity for a minifigure that we wished for, but I guess we have to live with it.

By in United Kingdom,

Rather dull, sort of like the originals so an echo to the first sets yet it's got detailing consistent with the new stuff, as such it comes off cheep. Does it at least come with a light-sabre?

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

For me it is just lame!

At least they have to include a silver chromed light saber

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I am rather glad I do not have to buy the new edition, then.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

shame that they missed the chance to put at least 2 figs in, old and new style would have been nice to show the differences in time

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the throw back Luke. I hadn't gotten back into collecting Lego when the original yellow SW minifigs were around--so this will be a nice addition to my collection.
But honestly I buy the book for the book--and I've been waiting for this update for a while and that's what I'm most excited about . . . the minifig is just a bonus.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The early Star Wars figures are my faves, because they're kind of a mash up of traditional Lego and Star Wars ideas. This guy would be way cooler if he came with plain legs!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Book looks good, but the minifig is the same as the sw021 version. In the past every Lego Star Wars book has come with its own unique minifig they really dropped the ball this time around.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I wonder what kids will say about this...

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Yes almost as sw021 but gray lines on torso have little diffrent place. So I think they wanted to reproduced it, but mistake on small datails. So I could be treated as variant od sw021 for those who are pedant :-)

By in United States,

I prefer the original Minifigures, as far as humans go, to the newer ones, because I just hate the facial expressions and the cartoonish faces. I don't really want to see Jodi Fosters face of a ROTJ Luke.

10 cookies to anyone who got the reference.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Hygrotus. That is correct. This is in fact an exclusive minifigure now. Brick just got real for all those people who just said they weren't going to get it because the figure wasn't exclusive.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As well as the grey 'crease' lines on the torso and legs being slightly different, my two originals have different belt buckle shapes to this figure. So, a new figure made to look old rather than a re-release of the old figure. This is essentially a 'replica' of the Luke that came with the first land speeder in '99.... The first OT set? I'm guessing the plastic won't be as good quality as the originals from '99 too!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the figure. it is the 15th anniversary of Lego Star Wars and the original figures were yellow. Luke is the most important character in Star Wars ( ANH will always be the first movie in my book) and it makes sense to have him like this. Wish all the figures were still yellow as it makes making custom figures easier to fit in. It just looks a little off when you have one flesh tone out of many in a custom setting.

By in Canada,

I too feel a tad disappointed at this, while I understand why LEGO would want to commemorate the SW Mini-Figures at the same time as updating the book, I think a less common character (such as Classic Lando from Cloud City) would have been a much better choice.

Pass...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@illinoisboy26 The first chewbacca was released in 2000, and why would you want a chewbacca that they have been putting in sets since last year? (besides the slight color difference)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have a few old Lukes but I'm happy to see LEGO honoring it's minifigure history.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@GuardianofAtlantis I think that once we get a look at it in person we'll be able to find something new about it. It will certainly be a different plastic quality if you count that. I'm really hoping its new because it would be outrageous to buy a book for just a common minifig. I am still going to buy the book for the book but I still feel like they are roping me in for a junker minifigure.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is the 6th version of Tatooine Luke. I would have liked something different but I'll be getting it because I'm a Star Wars minifigure completist. :( The printing on this retro minifig is slightly different from the original.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really like the original Luke minifigure and have a couple of my own. That said, for a book like this I am really disappointed they didn't go with a new character or a new variation on a character.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Underwhelmed is a good word...

I appreciate the idea, but it's just not appealing as a minifigure for a DK book, which are usually excellent. I agree that a rarer figure from the early sets would have been a better choice.

Of course, I plan on getting the book anyway, and I will appreciate the figure once I have it, as my own Luke (from the Landspeeder) is rather scratched and old-looking, so it will be good to have one that looks great on display with the rest of my exclusive minfigs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am going to buy the book anyway, but it would have been nice to get a cool minifgure to go along with it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I can't believe they have run out of ideas for the minifig, TLG are obviously not wanting to spend money on new moulds and printing for minifig for a book. Getting the book anyway but I am disappointed.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So the book will be purchased based on its content and not for the cover figure.
I fail to understand the issue here.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love it and all the crazy comments here. I just wish he wasn't white as white, maybe lain tan legs.

Wait will that get some racist comment now?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well I only got the last version of the book because it was £5. The fig is nothing special though I like the retro homage to a set I bought back in 99, so I guess these is for completists only. Never mind, more cash for Mixels and Disney Princesses!

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Yuppie, once again! Reading all these comments make me wonder why TLG thought this minifg was a good idea? Don't they have a focus group? If they have, who are they? Why aren't they here?

Gravatar
By in Czechia,

I completely understand the idea of the retro minifig. It supposed to be the minifig "that started it all" and I like the first SW minifigures. Too bad it is Luke, but on the other hand, which other minifig from 1999 it should be instead?

Princess Leia would be the best choice for me, but she was released later in 2000 with the first Millennium Falcon.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@GuardianofAtlantis
I'm not an expert in SW minifigs, but it does appear that mr_skinny answered your question in one of his posts above. Did you read the thread before posting?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the fig. I was born in 1999 and I think this in nice.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

As an OT completist since 1999, Brickset shows me I already own five yellow Tatooine Luke's that look almost exactly like this one. So no thanks, DK.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@ChicoCheco - your comment about it being another figure from 1999 gave me a great idea for what they should have put. They should have had an updated version of Jedi Luke in his Endor outfit that was in the first speeder bike set (http://brickset.com/minifigs/sw018).

Gravatar
By in United States,

And now for the official verdict: everyone now hates the Lego Star Wars Design and Marketing team. :)

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

Forgive my ignorance, but could anybody explain what is this book about? Is it just A bunch of lego catalogs put together in a hard cover or is it special in some way?

Gravatar
By in United States,

My gut reaction is BLEAH!

After thinking on it a bit... Still BLEAH!

Gravatar
By in United States,

One23,
It is a record of pretty much every LEGO Star Wars set ever made. It comes with little tidbits about features, minifigures, how many times they have been redesigned, perhaps a fact that only one set contains a specific element in a specific color; stuff like that. It'll be revised again and again until the contracts run out if they ever do.

And you guys don't seem to realize that the gray lines on this as well as the lines on the legs do not exactly match up which does make this an exclusive minifigure! Hygrotus saw this and I find that amazing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The whole reason they went to fleshies was because of Lando and the basketball figures. Up till then, all figs were yellow. But when they realized they had to change the color for Lando -- they realized they would have to change it for all "real" people.

This retro fig isn't all that exciting to me, of course I've gotten less and less excited about Star Wars over the years.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Agreed that it could have been better. But I personally do not own an old Luke minifig and so will enjoy adding it to my collection when I inevitably pick up the book.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why not an original Jango Fett, Lando, or even Luke in his Skyhopper pilot suit?

Gravatar
By in United States,

LOL! That makes me laugh to think of having a minifig with yellow skin!
