LEGO has announced a new 18+ Super Mario set, 71426 Piranha Plant!

71426 Piranha Plant
540 pieces, rated 18+
$59.99 / €64.99 / £57.99 / CA$79.99 / AU$94.99
Available from 6th November at LEGO.com

Today, the LEGO Group revealed the brick-built Piranha Plant, the latest addition to the expanding LEGO Super Mario theme for Adults, in partnership with Nintendo. The new building set is a fun re-creation of the iconic plant from Super Mario video games.

Built from over 500 pieces, the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant is a detailed and poseable set. It allows LEGO and Super Mario fans alike to move the head, mouth, stalk and leaves to create new and exciting poses. In addition, the building experience of the set allows you to create from the bottom up, so the Piranha Plant emerges as if it’s growing out of the pipe.

Carl Merriam, Senior Designer, LEGO Super Mario, commented: “When designing the Piranha Plant, it felt important to capture its distinctive features and ensure that the set could be positioned in a way that reflects its iconic poses. I’m so proud of the finished result, from the mouth to the leaves and stalk, we’ve managed to perfectly portray the menacing essence of the Piranha Plant!“

A fun gift idea for Nintendo fans or as a treat for yourself, the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant makes an impressive centrepiece for the home or office. The Adult line includes a series of Super Mario-themed building kits, such as The Mighty Bowser, each designed to evoke nostalgia from LEGO fans who remember Mario as an intrinsic part of their childhood.

The new LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant will be available from November 6, 2023, via LEGO stores, lego.com and from select leading retailers around the world. For more information, please visit www.LEGO.com/supermario

Well this is odd. Two posts on the same thing on the front page!

EDIT: the second one is gone now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

At least it looks okay. Still beats the cursed Chewbacca.

Seems like Chris and I had the same idea. :-)

Fixed now!

Great minds think alike!

By in Spain,

They could have least added a mechanisme so the plant goes up and down while opening and closing its mouth…

Gravatar
By in Poland,

wow it's unexpected and pretty interesting but also rather expensive

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks incredible! Price isn't too bad either. I like.

Gravatar
By in United States,

As someone who is terrified of all carnivorous plants, this scares me.

Besides that the set looks really good and very iconic.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Too bad it’s not functional, being unable to descend back down the pipe.

Looks pretty cool otherwise.

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Feed me, Seymour...

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Is this from the Super Mario theme, or from the Botannical one?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

you can already hear the lego mario fans complaining about not getting a mario minifigure

Gravatar
By in United States,

No Electronic Mario functions, does this mean we are near the end

Quite a few of the botanicals are cheaper, £50 range

Gravatar
By in United States,

Big fan of this. Nice to get an 18+ Nintendo set that isn't super expensive. I might pick this up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Love it! I will definitely be picking this up. Adding a piranha plant tile from something else is easy enough. It fits nicely with the giant world theme that 71412 Big Bad Island touches on too!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Reminds me of the plant from Little Shop of Horrors.

Gravatar
By in France,

It's awesome!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

That is weird - Super Mario meets Botanical
An interesting conversation starter

Gravatar
By in United States,

Amazing set!

Just the use of “Piranha Plant’s Lullaby” from Mario 64 in the little promo video makes me want to buy it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I appreciate having more sub £100 sets like this. Also might look nice alongside the botanical collection??

These adjectives (unexpected, interesting, expsensive) describe lego in general pretty well.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I see a wonderfull part for a mushroom house.
Great build wonderfull place to store spare Mario's

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is November 6 a date of some significance? It feels a bit random for a release date.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Wow, I'm a bit flabbergasted by the comments...you all realize it is 65€ and not 6,5€, right?

Gravatar
By in United States,

So, is this part of the botanical collection?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Doesn’t pass the gut check for me. It’s really a $45.00 set, in my humble opinion. Maybe less. By that I mean paying that would be be something where I’d go “Damn that’s a great set!!” Otherwise I have a kind of Ho hum reaction to it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks interesting, I think now with the movie being out etc and length of the licence, we're guaranteed never to get Mario minifigures.

I think after tons of $300+ sets, $60 seems like a lot less than it actually is. Maybe this is a start of more affordable Lego sets? One can only dream. . .

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it but don't want start nee theme to collect.

I think they'll have a release date of November 1st for the VIPs, with the rest of us getting it slightly later.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think the price is pretty reasonable for what it is (especially for a licensed set). I'll probably pick this up!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Only a matter of time until we get a model of F.L.U.D.D.

...right?

Gravatar
By in United States,

This one looks very good, but I don't know where I need to put it. :/

Gravatar
By in United States,

This looks pretty cool… $60 isn’t too bad, either

Another Video Game related set I’ll have to add to the list to buy…

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can't wait to mod this into the type with the doofy little legs!

I was wondering the same thing. Or I failed to realize the sarcasm of those commenting about this being good value.
For what you get the RRP is ludicrous.
Then again, this will be a shelf warmer like all the other Super Mario sets, meaning it will see the same constant discounts of up to 50%. At those prices it becomes very interesting.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think there should be more Nintendo Lego sets like this, Bowser, the question mark block and the NES set, and fewer sets like all those expansion courses. I have little interest in moving the Mario figure along a course to 'collect' coins. However, buying those expansion sets was the only way to acquire most of the characters from the Mario games.

And why on earth have there been no Zelda Lego sets? Since Lego acquired the rights from Nintendo to produce Mario sets, it seems like a huge missed opportunity not to acquire the rights from Nintendo to make sets based on the Zelda games. How about a large Hyrule Castle set, for example? Does no-one else have any enthusiasm for a set like that?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't know, $60 seems about right. And if ^ is right, I'd definitely pick one up for 50% off for my little Mario fan. Could use a bunch of purple puddles around it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is adorable, but I'm a little disappointed that unlike the previous Mario D2C sets it doesn't seem to have any compatibility with the digi-figs. Like The Mighty Bowser, a giant Piranha Plant like this would've made a great "boss" to finish a level with.

That I would certainly have bought.
This looks a bit rubbish, although admittedly pretty accurate to the subject matter (which I have zero interest in).

Not necessarily? If a display set doesn’t benefit from electronic interaction I don’t think they need to shoehorn it in.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Wow, LEGO is really milking the Mario franchise to the max. The theme seems to be selling quite well, so good for them! Not my cup of tea but I do like the immediate recognisable icon they made here.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ideal Mother's Day present!

Gravatar
By in United States,

For sale at Mushnik's Flower Shop.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Now I realise that I've got a prototype version. You can definitely see the similarities, particularly in the pipe construction...

https://ibb.co/zJzXNJj

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Of all the Mario stuff Lego did so far, this is the closest of something I might buy (definitely not at full retail). I would still buy a set with minifig Mario if they eventually smarten up and produce one (would buy a minifig Link as well).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Apparently it stores coin pieces? See one of the product photos.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very nifty! $60 seems reasonably priced compared to the other Mario set range. I would have preferred a pipe on its own which folded out into an underground vignette, but this is nice all the same.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like it! It captures the piranha quite well, and it is an eye-catching design. Let alone the price/value is pretty great! I won't be picking it up though. It doesn't quite fit my display choices, and I have enough to catch up on as it is.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

No mechanism?
Also I really dont understand this decision.
Where are minifig sets?

That's a neat set, not to large, looks really nice, but sadly is rather expensive.

Gravatar

It reminds me of those solar panel dancing flowers...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Oh man that looks awesome. I think I’ll pick that up as a Christmas decoration.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

As cool as this is, I just wish they'd do this with the Sonic sets. Something a similar style to 43179 in particular...

I would love to see Zelda sets! I thought I remember seeing a Great Deku Tree leak for 2024, but maybe I am confusing it with that questionnaire they did earlier this year. Hyrule Castle sounds amazing, although I would love to see some small affordable sets as well. Particularly I would like to see a King of the Red Lions set from WW. There have been a couple of Ideas submissions, but they never made it.

You mean Insiders, we are no longer VIPs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Gotta say that I love how they made an affordable 18+ Mario set. However I just don’t see myself getting a Piranha Plant, a Goomba, Koopa Troopa, or Shy Guy on the other hand I might go for.

Audrey II, "owned" by Seymour Krelborn, hence @djcbs' "Feed me, Seymour" comment.

Wasn't there one announced?

@birch:
I believe this one was intended for Mother-in-Laws Day.

considering piece count should be $25, if compairing two... But got add theme value.. $35-$40?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I didn't bother with 71395 (although I do like its fold-out diorama) or 71411, but I may get this. And to add to the Little Shop of Horrors comment: "Feed me, Mario... by getting in my belly!"

Gravatar
By in United States,

The top center tooth bothers me a little. I feel it should be a little bit further forward, rather than in line with the two on either side.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Looks great but I’m getting tired of brick-built objects

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

This looks good. I am excited for this one.
I am glad they didn't go with a larger set this time. Makes it easier to fit in the budget.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well I love this, but I don't love the price given the botanical range in general is cheaper for a similar style of things.

Also, missed a trick as others have mentioned, not having a movement mechanism, or a hidden minifig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You know, if it wasn't so massive, the design would be a good base for Frank, from the Harley Quinn streaming series.

Yep. Posted without reading the preceding comments. That's a guarantee that yours will be hopelessly derivative. That's the web. That's life.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

At JB Spielwaren it can already be pre-ordered with 20% discount, and it's not even out yet.
I stand by my prediction of discounts of 50% sooner rather than later.
At least over here the Super Mario sets are total shelf warmers and abysmal sellers that can't be moved without massive discounts.

Technically all Lego is brick built objects.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Although the set design is excellent, I wonder if those printed white circles will be the downfall of this set. Confidence for white being printed well is at an all-time low.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I kinda want to buy one of these and modify it into a walking version for Poison Ivy to ride...

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Definitely getting two of these - one for me and one for a plant lover...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@Ridgeheart said: "No, I'm just upset that this particular Piranha Plant isn't wearing Speedos. Bring us Petey Piranha, TLG! Give the people what they want!"

I'm glad that I did.

Darn it, now I want to do that, too! Or at least put a Batman figure in the mouth.

Gravatar
By in United States,

is that a ball joint in dark green?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Well, at least it's under 300 euro for once.

I still wouldn't want to spend that much on it, but hey, I'm not much of a Mario fan. Nor do I have that much to throw around on something like this. But for others it's nice that there are more options now.
