A look at some Insiders rewards
Posted by Huw,
LEGO has kindly sent us three Insiders rewards to examine: a 'nightmare' art print, a cap, and the Christmas bauble that'll be available from this weekend in the Rewards Centre for 1,800 points.
The bauble comes packed in an attractively decorated box branded with the LEGO Insiders logo.
It's actually quite good quality, made from metal, painted well and adorned with a branded ribbon.
It splits in half, allowing you to stuff it with sweets, or maybe LEGO bricks!
Three 'nightmare' posters are currently available for 1,750 points and I've been sent 'Revenge of the Cheese slope'. It's 30x40cm in size and apparently printed in glow-in-the-dark ink, although I've not had it in a dark enough room to notice.
It arrives flat, is printed on good quality card stock, and is embossed in one corner with an 'only the best is good enough' logo.
FInally, in the selection of rewards sent to me, is this Octan hat, which can be yours for 2,400 points.
At first glance it looks quite good, with an embroidered logo of LEGO City's monopolistic energy provider, but unfortunately, closer inspection reveals that the rim of the peak has been given a 'distressed' look. It's not very subtle, so rather than look 'trendy' it just looks damaged.
I never understand why people buy jeans with rips in them, but perhaps this will appeal to those that do.
All three items, and much more, are available in the Insiders Rewards Centre.
Thanks to LEGO for providing these items for inspection. All opinions expressed are my own.

Points = discount.
Never even considered using them for rather pointless things like these.
I do love those posters, but the points value is way too high. I'd expect (and would purchase) a full set for that number of points.
Do like they tell you amounts made 3204/5400 for one them. But I'd rather use points good discount huge. set.
I like the idea of an Octan cap, but a) why is it damaged and b) why isn't it in white/red/green?
"Distressed" clothing is a bane, I wish they would just let the consumer decide whether they want something to look worn or not.

I have the complete opposite outlook, I can get discounts from just about any other retailer without having to "spend" rewards points. I pretty much only use my points for exclusive physical rewards (preferably brick-based, but sometimes the various collectibles catch my eye as well).
Made in?
I literally have the same aluminum spheres from a Toblerone holiday special product :D
My problem is you can only add one to your purchase. So when I want more than one reward I have to split my purchase up in several purchases to get them.

That’s literally your choice as a consumer? You can buy jeans that are ‘worn’, or jeans that are ‘clean’.

Yeah, I was going to say the same. It's common specialty packaging for chocolates and sweets, so the value and exclusivity of a LEGO-branded version is certainly rather limited.

Every dad in the past 30 years or so. :'-)

My poster says Made in Dongguan, China, 07/23
Jay's Brick Blog shows how the posters look like when they glow in the dark here:

I liked my first poster so much I had to get more. I don't know how the price compares to other glow in the dark posters out there but these are really fun and feel like quality. I hope they make more next year.
there is also the little sidenote to ordering Inside rewards this weekend during insider weekend, that apparently the code you need to use for the extra discount on certain sets counts as a physical reward, so first of all you can only get one discounted set per order, secondly you cant get a physical inside reward with that order, like for instant the prints or the walkman set.
1. Baubles that are similar to ones you can buy full of fudge in ALDI for about 1/3rd the value of the points these cost.
2. Damaged clothing.
3. Left over Halloween posters.
I think I'll take the money off.
A naf, cheapo metal bauble as used by many brands.
A poster that jokes about a part that in reality is most irritating by its low quality when it splits in half.
A damaged’, non-white Octan cap.
Bah humbug!
Biggest shame about rewards is that you can't have multiple ones per order, which I assume is fully intentional. Combined with rather costly shipping and minimum free shipping threshold being quite high, it's probably effective strategy making people buy more stuff.
What a pile of rubbish.
Does anyone know where that astronaut with the red pigtails coming out of her helmet comes from?
She’s on the cover of the late holiday catalog, but I didn’t see anything inside with her in it. Also rocket wheelchair elf looks awesome, but I didn’t see that, either.
Distressed clothing is fine - ripped jeans, holes in shirts, and distressed caps can all be quite stylish. The problem, of course, is that something earning a lovely "patina" normally takes a lot of time. It's preferable to break in clothing yourself, but there's nothing wrong with cutting to chase if there's a look you're going for.
The problem is that cap is not at *all* well distressed - a scuffed up brim with fabric that isn't the least bit faded just makes it look phony.
If LEGO is trying to get people to cash in their rewards points on something other than coupons, they need to offer better stuff. The print is fine, I guess, though IDK how desirable it is.
The Classic Space logo hat being distressed makes it look like a hat you've had since 1978. I presume the Octan one is meant to be the same basic "joke" for lack of a better word coming to mind, but it's undermined by the Octan logo still being "in circulation."
As for why it's red rather than the more obvious white, that makes it match up with the common nineties "red race car driver" minifigs seen in for example 6546. Maybe it's actually meant as a homage to the old Town Racing subtheme?

I believe she is one of the characters from the “Play Is Your Superpower” campaign.
I do quite like the bauble, although including a few bricks inside might have been nice. The unfunny microposters and the damaged cap, not so much!
I feel like a lot of these items are neat, but I wish the hats were sold separately.

I got the Wonders of the World with points, so worth it. I also snagged the VIP version of the old pirate coin, and I love that too.

It is even worse if two people have the same cap, as the damage is in the same place on each cap.
My clothing gets its distressed look the old fashioned way - by using it until it falls apart.
Wouldn't waste my points for any of this tat.
The only things I use points for is discounts on exclusive sets or the odd second chance at GWPs that I missed the first time round.
the hats are so tiny
Everyone's so disdainful of "distressed" clothing... wait until I tell you about "relic" guitars...
I was going to get the classic space hat, but when I noticed it was damaged on purpose it was an easy pass for me
This trend of damaged new clothes is weird and very bad, it's very strange to understand why people like those thing... If I buy something I don't want it damaged
I don't think I've ever had a cheese slope get stuck there, but that poster is still timely for me, as I was rebuilding 76188 yesterday evening and there were two round 1x1 tiles stuck in a https://brickset.com/parts/6166113/front-2x2-sport I was able to get one of them out, but due to my limited use of my left hand, I had to get my third nephew to dig the other one out.

I'm in the middle; If I have enough points and there aren't ant any rewards available that appeal to me, I'll get a discount.

Yeah, I got the Classic Space one a while back, and found that it could barely perch on the back of my head, so I gave it to the aforementioned nephew. My points weren't wasted though, as he wears it often.
The blue classic space cap is epic! Just wanted to add something positive ??
Oh boy I do love buying clothes that look like a dog chewed them. Never got the point in ripped jeans either, they just look cold. What's it like wearing them, and why do you do so?
Does the poster comes folded? Or inside a tube?

In the article it clearly states:

I definitely prefer using points on exclusive things. I got 5007427 for 2400 points last year and it is glorious. These posters are cool but not for 75% of the points I used for the Pirate Adventure Ride set. The "limited edition" gimmick is a marketing ploy to justify the high price. The fact that these posters are still available after Halloween and being available for a couple of months proves how overprice they are. The baubble is nice, but I preferred the clear plastic balls with mini-builds within them.
That Octan cap looks like it's straight in the '90s

I saw the roadshow version of H8ful Eight, and there’s a scene where Jennifer Jason Leigh’s character smashes a guitar. They used a different cut for the standard version, but in the take they used for the roadshow cut, she apparently picked up the _expensive_ vintage guitar they had on loan, and smashed the real thing before they could call “cut” and have the props guy swap it out with a fake stunt version.
Could that hat be anymore red? Its like redder than the color red :P

Prints normally come flat, loose under a larger box in your order. I wouldn't like to vouch for their flatness if your order doesn't contain a convenient larger box!
Since I do nt buy enough Lego and cannot purchase from Lego store in my country, I never got into the points Ponzi scheme. How much money does it take to reach 1,800 points?

Yeah, I'm with you on this one. I mean, I have disposable income; if I didn't, I wouldn't be in this hobby. I like things that are nice and somewhat exclusive. Those posters? My dude, they are a joy. I would've liked them to be cheaper, but the universe is cold and uncaring (though those posters sure are nice).
Besides, if I'm absolutely honest - if I want Lego at a discount (which I do), I look to other retailers who will happily enable my crippling addiction to ABS."
Vive la difference!

How else could they get a real reaction from her when Kurt Russell did that?
I got the Classic Space hat last year. I HAD TO because it has the Classic Space logo, but I do wish it wasn't pre-distressed. All the hats are also distressed the exact same way...so it's really obviously fake distressing if two people with the same hat are together.
@Sethro3:
You got it backwards. He’s got that split second of realizing what she’s about to do, and knowing it wasn’t the stunt guitar in her hands.
@PDelahanty:
Forget even two people. All it took was a close examination of _one_ hat, and I could tell it was pattern-distressed on a machine. Everything looks crisp and brand new, and that includes the distress marks that look like they were copy/pasted along the brim.
