City Advent Calendar - Day 1

Posted by ,

It's the most wonderful time of the year - time for advent calendars! Together we'll open the 24 doors of the City advent calendar. Being the longest running calendar, I always admire how the City calendar designers keep things fresh. Today, we'll look at the packaging and of course, what's behind door number one.

The front of the box shows a very festive scene, and that we'll see both Mr. and Mrs. Claus in this calendar.

The back of the box shows some of the other scenes, as well as a couple of the other minifigs that we'll meet.

The display mat flips down, and shows that the builds will revolve around a Christmas market as well as some indoor scenes.

Let's not waste any more time, and take a look behind door number 1.

We're starting with a foundational build of advent calendars - a snowman! A very sporting snowman we have as well, with a helmet and goggles. He needs them too, as he's also on skis. It's the first time I've seen a snowman on skis, but why not! This snowman knows how to make an entrance.

By in Australia,

I hate to start on a negative note, but after spending all of November looking forward to opening the calendar on the first day of December, I was really disappointed, this morning.

The scarf doesn't fit properly. The end hanging down the front of the snowman hits the top of the white dome piece, and it's forced outwards. It bends, quite noticeably. And it upset me because this is basic quality control. All you have to do is actually make the thing, and just hold it up in front of you, and you can see it doesn't fit. That's all they had to do. But apparently that was too much effort.

If you put the scarf on top of the red round 1x1 plate, it fits, but then the helmet doesn't fit. You could always use the spare red plate, but then it starts getting a bit ridiculous (and it looks like the snowman has some kind of chronic neck injury).

But then I just kind of thought, well, one bad day doesn't mean the next 23 are going to be bad. And, ultimately, I have a pile of spare skiing equipment (that I can give to any minifig I chose) and a functional, if not slightly boring, snowman.

Still, hoping tomorrow's is better.

By in United Kingdom,

I'm glad to see @MeganL that you did the same as me and built the snowskier with the body rotated so the skis are separated rather than being together :D

By in Netherlands,

I haven't really been reading the Star Wars comics lately, but at what moment did the empire replace snowtroopers with droids?
Droids that don't have arms or eyes?
Made from propane tanks?

I guess sliding one of these bad boys down a hill might create a nice explosion. It'll be fine because it has a helmet!

What an obscure pick for the first day!

It's happening!

I think it serves more as a cloth stand for a minifig, putting the helmet and skies on one of the minifigs would make for a decent skier.

That's quite an exaggeration. It's fine here, and – I would humbly suggest – really not worth worrying about.

But, if it bends, isn't it ILLEGAL?

“If you ‘french fry’ when you want to ‘pizza’…you’re gonna have a bad day!”

I got enough orange scarves from the pile of 2019 HPACs I bought, and red ones from the CMF Snowman. If they’re not going to give us more lime scarves, at least make the dark-red one more common!

I just went and checked mine and the way I have it the scarf is loose, allowing the whole thing to be tilted just slightly by hitting the dome. Certainly not forced to bend or any other stress.

My normal response to hearing "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" is to look for a mute button, but I kind of like this one (I am in the skis together camp). And I am happy to have a few more twigs for the parts bin after Christmas. Useful for landscaping but I mostly have them from sets that I don't want to part out.

You don’t live on Mackinac Island, do you? When the northern edge of Lake Huron freezes over in the new year, they keep a path clear of snow so it’ll freeze even thicker, and line the safe path with the previous year’s Christmas trees (after removing all the ornaments and such).

By in Canada,

When snowmen begin to sky (or any other physical activities) they change and become 'snow goons' as in Calvin & Hobbes by Watterson. (judging by the comics, these are quite dangerous and 'persistent' especially to a highly impressionable 6 years old boy).

Welcome back guys! Always nice to be with you again this year :)

By in United States,

So, City is the only AC this year that doesn't start with a minifig.

@BaconKing: More than one SWAC has had one, and the first MAC did, as well.

I like him, bit silly and actually needs some building.
