The LEGO Movie storage box
Posted by Huw,
These giant LEGO brick-like storage boxes have been around for a few years but now they've been given new packaging and made in new colours to 'celebrate the release of The LEGO Movie'.
UK storage specialist company Store, which sells a range of LEGO storage products, has sent me one to review.
I was asked which one I wanted so I went for a 2x2 in orange which is a new colour for these boxes. They are also available in a range of standard and pastel (Friends) colours and in 1x1, 1x2, 2x4 sizes.
They are made in Poland for a Danish company, Room Copenhagen, and I get the impression that these LEGO Movie branded ones are exclusively available in the UK from Store.
The boxes are very well made, from Polypropylene. The lid fits snugly and, thanks to the ridges on the inner section, lifts off easily.
The base of the box has been designed to enable them to be stacked.
The external dimensions of this 2x2 box are 15 x 25 x 25 cm, excluding studs. Internally it's 11 x 23 x 23 cm and therein lies the main flaw with it: If my calculations are correct the storage capacity is just 62% of the overall volume of the box.
These are sturdy and good looking storage boxes but ultimately they are not that efficient volume-wise for actually storing things in. Nevertheless they are cool things to have a few of stacked in your LEGO room for keeping your extra-special stuff in. This orange one is particularly eye-catching.
Store stocks a wide range of LEGO storage and household items including a LEGO Movie branded lunch set.
[Disclosure: Brickset will NOT receive commission on items purchased via the links in this review but thanks Store for sending the item for review.]

These are great storage boxes. I was gifted with a few a while back; one 2x4, two 1x2s, one 2x2s, 1stud. Been meaning to pick up a black 2x2 I spotted in TRU - perfect for the role of Lord Business' ship! I think the black is a new colour too.
As you say Huw not great on volume but fantastic for brightening up a room. Nice review.
Would be more helpful if it had dividers... I suppose if I had a few hundred orange 2x2s this would be the appropriate place to put them.
These are available in the US as well - mostly at Target stores.
I'm pretty sure I saw a Lego Movie version of a 2x2 box in John Lewis the other day. Can't remember which colour though.
They are good for color sorting your bricks. :D
They're definitely not exclusive. I've seen them in John Lewis, Brent Cross and Oxford Street
I have also ordered the giant lego Halloween heads from Store in the past. Seem like a good company to deal with.
Saw them in Toys r Us (uk) a few weeks back as well. My nephew almost has enough to build a lego den big enough to fit in now!
I have a couple of those. My "pain" is that small parts, like tiles can get stuck into that "circle" at the bottom. Volume-wise, well... you can use the bottom and the top separately, then doubling storage capacity! But then stacking would be a problem :-)
They had these in Smyths as well, I think they were in orange and black, they had a 2x4 brick as well.
Speaking of the lego movie, is anyone going to post a review of Metalbeard's Sea Cow on the home page anytime soon? I was just wondering out loud...
I have two of these boxes and two big yellow minifig heads for storing bricks, and both have the same problem: The ring-shaped holes in the bottom that small parts get stuck in! This is a design flaw that makes them totally useless for storing tiles and smaller parts.
This problem is especially annonying with the storage bricks, the narrow holes are perfect for swallowing up your tiles. Keep a Lego Castle lance ready for picking them out.
At first sight I almost thought there is eventually the TLM Junior set. Now I have no clue what relashion this box have to TLM.
I have some of the 2x4 versions of these, and use two sheets of letter size paper as a cover for the ring openings inside to prevent small pieces from getting stuck there. I've seen these LEGO Movie branded 2x2 at Target in the US.
grendelscott I'm doing this prevention with a big sticky tape. It's a shame those boxes have this openings in them. All smart parts are coming of course right into those :(
@AT-TE is so cool, no plans at present to review it.
I use these for storing sweets, not Lego.
@AT-TE is so cool - check out the user reviews. I can only say so much - it is a fantastic set, only things I disliked where the stickers and that the ship has no railings and there is little room to actually place the minifigs. It is a great start for MOCs and has a ton of useful parts.
I keep my fiddly little spares in embroidery thread boxes. They're fab.
Yep, pretty much as the last few people have said, they're neat storage boxes; they're just useless for actually storing LEGO.
And it's a travesty that they're not an exact integer multiple in size of a standard LEGO brick. Can you even centre the head on the 2x2 brick?
Uhhh... Why does it say knobs rather than studs?
It is a shame that these storage bricks can't really be used for storing LEGO. They look big on the outside, but so small onthe inside! They are more like home decor items, which is cool, but with a few simple design changes they could have made them more useful for LEGO fans.
Speaking of the holes on the inside, I was reading the other day that some people put tape over the holes. You can even use colored tape to match the color of the bricks....(c;
There is another storage unit by the same company that I find a lot more useful for AFOLs. I just happened to review them yesterday; http://thebrickblogger.com/2014/03/new-lego-storage-sorting-boxes-review/
I want some of these, but the website only ships to the UK :( I would love a round 1x1 for my small tiles and parts.
@legomaniac I don't know where you are at, but if you are in the USA, they are widely available. TRU and Target carries them regularly, and they are also available on Amazon and eBay in every possible size, color and shape. Just make sure you don't mix them up with the lunch-boxes that look quite the same on pictures and made by the same company.
Just to clarify things, I've been told that Store is the official distributors of the LEGO range in the UK – when you see it sold elsewhere, it’s because they stock it on license from Store.
I picked up some of these in various colours recently at Tesco. They are very handy for storing 'unsorted' parts although I agree they don't hold as much as perhaps one might expect - definitely no tardis here. The stacking ability was the draw for me. Like others have noted I also find the gap at the bottom annoying with respect to small parts that get stuck there and can't be shifted without using a thin object to prise them out
No Trans-Clear?
Riddler, Smyths Irish stores have the black versions for €19.99 so UK stores would presumably be the equivalent in sterling. My local Tesco here in Ireland has had the non-movie versions of these (all colours) on sale for €10.99. The 8-stud (non-movie) versions in my Tesco were €15.99.
I'm a little surprised so many people state they put bricks of a certain color in a storage box of the same color. I find it much easier to find the bricks I need in a box of a contrasting color...
I own one of these boxes, but also use it to store other things than Lego bricks. That circle in the bottom is just terrible!
These are branded as The LEGO Movie but are not exclusive. I've seen many of them in Target. Lots of stationary and storage LEGO merchandise, some from last year, are labelled with LEGO Movie to be more eye-catching to people browsing the stores.
