Review: 60430 Interstellar Spaceship
Posted by CapnRex101,
The previous Space subtheme in LEGO City prioritised realism, clearly contrasting with the new range. 60430 Interstellar Spaceship seems like a product of science fiction and looks very sleek, focusing on pure speed over storage or other practical considerations.
I love the angular shape of this vehicle and its proportions, while its central function was a pleasant surprise too. There is even an exclusive minifigure, so this should prove to be another great addition to the Space subtheme.
Summary
60430 Interstellar Spaceship, 240 pieces.
£17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99 | 7.5p/8.3c/8.3c per piece.

The spacecraft looks outstanding and offers excellent value for money
- Beautiful, distinctive shape
- Clever engine function
- Very tactile for play
- No drone storage

Minifigure
The astronauts available in these Space sets wear uniforms of varying colour, of which bright green, dark azure and flame yellowish orange are the most common. This dark blue design is exclusive to 60430 Interstellar Spaceship, however. I assume that denotes the astronaut's role as a pilot, specialising in high speed manoeuvres.
Dark blue highlights are found on all the new astronauts, so the addition of dark blue arms and a matching dual-moulded helmet is highly effective. The pearl gold hands look excellent as well, complementing golden accents on the torso and legs. This minifigure even includes a unique head, which is decorated with a metallic silver tattoo, resembling a constellation.
The pilot wears a dark azure jetpack, which looks odd against the predominant dark blue. I am happy to see this piece again though, having last appeared in 75266 Sith Troopers Battle Pack. Moreover, a drone can be mounted on the jetpack, adding movable wings, thrusters and a trans-opalescent purple battery.
The Completed Model
Aerodynamics are not really a consideration for space flight, but this vehicle absolutely radiates speed and I think it looks fantastic. Similar models have been produced before, but this design has a uniquely angular nose, paired with stubby wings, which give the spacecraft an attractive arrow-like silhouette. Also, the length of 22cm is just the right size for play.
2x4 wedge plates form the nose and the layers of black and white look marvellous, while the transition into a pair of 3x10 curved wedge slopes is almost seamless. Additionally, the subtle change in angle here is effective and I also approve of the canopy selected. This element was introduced in 76832 XL-15 Spaceship, but arguably works even better when situated further forward.
Lifting the canopy reveals space for the astronaut inside, even when wearing her jetpack, but without the drone attached. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to store the drone on board, which feels like an oversight. The printed holographic console looks good though and is one of several printed parts included, avoiding the need for stickers.
Two more of those elements are found on either side of the fuselage, forming engine intakes. The decoration is fairly simple, but looks nice and complements the sand blue panels on both wings. Reddish orange details are included as well, which are another feature shared between several of the new City spacecraft.
The trans-opalescent purple batteries on top are also found in all the new sets, here located on top of a reddish orange 2x4 roller coaster track element. These conduits look superb and I like how the batteries stand out, both in colour and beyond the shape of the bodywork. In addition, the printed space emblem is a welcome feature, obviously bearing a close resemblance to the Classic Space logo.
Even though it looks as though the engines should be situated beneath the white 4x5x1 cockpit panels, this spacecraft is actually propelled by a single dark bluish grey nacelle in the centre of the fuselage. Pushing down on the batteries causes the nacelle to open, revealing some trans-orange pieces inside.
The mechanism is simple and works well, presumably representing a quick boost of speed, or perhaps affording the vessel improved manoeuvrability. The engine has to be closed manually, which is slightly disappointing, although expected given the limited space available for complex linkages between the batteries and each section of the thruster.
Overall
60430 Interstellar Spaceship is close to perfect, in my opinion. The model looks wonderful and represents a dramatic change from other LEGO City spacecraft, instead recalling an A-wing or other light interceptors from Star Wars. I am not sure what purpose such a vehicle would serve in real space exploration, although speed could be useful for scouting.
Regardless, the design is appealing and I am pleased with the engine function, although I wish the designer could have found somewhere to store the jetpack drone. Despite that minor issue, this is a brilliant set and I think the price of £17.99, $19.99 or €19.99 is reasonable. LEGO fans have asked for a new Space range to succeed Galaxy Squad and models like this should satisfy demand.

Good parts, all prints, good price, nice design.
Can't see anything wrong with this set.
Just curious, @huw when are we going to see the Series 25 review, if there will be one?

@CapnRex101 has the figures and will be doing it in due course.
Prints, good fig, sleek design, fun play feature, and decent price. Lego this is The Way!
I would have absolutely loved to get this set as a kid!
Kinda looks like the ship in the classic space logo!
All that's missing is 2 well placed spring loaded shooters, at least in my opinion.
I’m imagining the engine nacelle opening up to achieve the speeds necessary for interstellar travel. I can almost hear the sound it makes as it powers up, which is a testament to the set’s design. Great little ship!
Thanks for the review!
This set is delightful.
It has everything it needs to be an agile and swift scout spaceship, but with a blooming function and some sort of air/brakes that give it somewhat aggressive attitude of a prickly pig or a hedgehog if there's danger in sight.
I couldn't escape the feeling that this small set is way more fun and beautiful than most of 20 to even 60 bucks worth Star Wars sets.
I agree with not having anywhere to put the backpack, however, i disassembled it and put the additional winglets beneath the large white airbrakes to make it a bit more buffed.
And the silver constellation tattoo/makeup/visor reflection is a silver-icing on a cake. Just shows how much this astronaut is into her mission.
Pick three of these ASAP and enjoy it three times or make someone's day stellar!
PLAY WELL Translator:
- Beautiful, distinctive shape = "It's very swooshable"
- Clever engine function = "Making it swooshable"
- Very tactile for play = "Fwoosh...SWOOOOSH!"

it has the same shape
Absolutely fantastic set! I love the build, the function, and the exclusive "blue squad captain" minifigure.
I agree that the lack of drone storage is a slight shame, but really there's not much space for it that this set isn't already using to its fullest (either for the fig or the fantastic function). My best idea would be to maybe replace the 1x2 plate on the bottom with a 1x2 round plate and add a trans clear antenna piece to attach to the wing so the drone could "fly" alongside the ship. But ultimately for a set this size there was probably only so much they could do.
Another slight shame (to me at least) is I sort of wish the awesome exclusive character in this set had an alternate hairpiece for when you remove her helmet. I'm considering ordering part 76772 (the hairpiece from Empress Beatrix in Ninjago, among others) in black for her, since I feel like that hairpiece would show off her tattoo really well.
This looks so amazing! I personally take the "interstellar" part to infer that this is supposed to be some kind of hypersonic or even lightspeed craft.
Again, like the Dreamzzz space car, I'm probably gonna ask for this one for my birthday since it's something that the average person could easily afford.
Beautiful set, very high on my wanted list right now!

That's fine. I was just curious. Thanks for the quick response!
10/10 top tier set. Great price, no stickers, new figure parts, swooshable to the extreme.
I'm not usually a big City buyer outside of the occasional vehicle, but this, the smaller rover, and the mech are 100% going into my collection.
This looks like it could be the great-great-great-grandchild of set 918.
That is really amazing. That really is truly amazing. That is so amazingly amazing I think I’d like to steal it!
Pretty much perfect set at this price point!
Dont buy this set, Just buy 4+ one. Same cost, and is WAY better.
12 printed pieces(1 unique), 2 minifigs, 5 crystals.
Ok this Spaceship has unique fig though...., Still that 4 + is a better deal.
I haven't paid much attention to Lego spacecraft since the UFO theme in 1998, but this ship grabbed my attention quickly. 10 year old me would have absolutely saved my pennies for this one.
Honestly the way I figured the minifigures designate rank, where the lighter colors would be your "enlisted" out lower rank, and the darker versions (which there is only one of each across the line) would be your "officers" of their given division. Blue is your pilot division, Green your research/supervise division, and flame-yellow your construction/drilling division. Then the overarching general would be the black and gold in the largest set.
Also important to note, so far at the time of writing, each "officer" minifigure to my best extent has a unique face print, unless shared in another set of 2024 that I just overlooked. All told, I like to see where this sub-theme goes, and if we will get any red, gold, or white divisions in the future.
Dang, this ship looks lit!
I like the ship - might be the only item I get from the current line of City 'space' sets. Since the helmet and spacesuit are wrong, it will just represent a spacecraft from a different quadrant landing for a visit on my 'classic space' spaceport just like Buzz Lightyear or Star Wars crafts do from time to time.
For me, to be perfect, it should come with a classic spaceman (just like in 10497) but dark blue. Should Lego had done the whole new series (with all sorts of different colours) with the regular 'classic spacemen/women' I would have bought them all. Lots of money saved!
This set made me think of the Nolan movie, Interstellar. So then I found this on Ideas - https://ideas.lego.com/s/p:7a6d8d85093d4f6cab7f48b405115d60
Somehow, I didn't see this spaceship set in stores when it was released. ¯\_(._.)_/¯

You mean 60429? For a 4+ set that one seems surprisingly decent, but this just looks so much better. A pure play set versus one that strikes a good balance between play and display value.
Aerodynamics don't matter in space proper, but maybe this is a prototype single-stage-to-orbit vehicle, like a super-charged X-1 or X-15 -- to be able to take off from a pad or runway (or carrier aircraft) in atmosphere, and fly all the way to orbital velocity.
Or maybe, like the DMC DeLorean, its aerodynamic shape helps it slip through the space-time barrier or glide through the luminiferous aether faster-than-light!
reminds me of the delta flier from star trek voyager. I like it
Is this an example of a near perfect set?
Could be...
Great design.
Added functionality.
Nice parts.
New minifig.
Prints not stickers.
Affordable and reasonable price point.
It's a win for me
A rare win for the City line nowadays. I just wish they offered B-models or back of the box builds just like the old days. I could be a nice successor to the recently retired 31111 Creator set.
I really love this set, but I'm going to be that guy and ask why doesn't the pilot have gloves?

This set has more parts overall and a better build, though. 4+ sets rarely excel as far as satisfying builds for older builders are concerned.

She does, they’re Pearl Gold…
When I first saw the pictures of the new space sets, I just had to get this one. It's perfect, solid and swooshable LEGO space ship :D
So is Space back? Space is back, right? Can we say Space is back?? Excited for these new sets--not really a fan of that engine, but the rest of the set looks great and I'm glad many of the sets I want this year are actually in the $20-50 range for once.
From what I’ve seen so far about this year’s Space subtheme of City, I’m getting a lot of “Futuron 2” vibes. It’s so focused on exploration. Just the window pieces should have been trans dark blue, or at least another shade of trans blue. For me personally this is Futuron 2, and since the original Futuron is the best Lego theme ever, got to collect them all :-)
No other space theme got me this strong feeling of being the successor to Futuron
Thanks for the review.
I might have gone from just happy to see Space continue to wanting to buy some sets.
All prints, no stickers definitely should be a + in the summary.
I got very excited when I saw the title of this set, and then instantly became disappointed once I saw the picture. This does not look like any of the spaceships from the movie Interstellar, and this is the perfect year for Lego to make one as its the 10th anniversary of that film.
I really like this set. I'm hoping they make a larger $50-60 ship in this line someday.
Looks like this is a ship designed for both athsmopheric and outer space flight.

Love this set. It has a great design and an even better price point. I think it would have looked a little bit better if there were some sort of undercarriage for when the craft is parked after a hard day of swooshing. Some sort of internal storage wouldn't have hurt either.
I also wonder how volatile are these battery packs if they have to be mounted on the exterior of the craft! :)

If they're anything like the hyperfuel in Lightyear or the coaxium in Solo, they're tremendously unstable and make a terrific bang if you so much as sneeze.
The constellation pattern on the face is referred to as a 'tattoo', but I think it's more likely that this is intended to be a reflection in the visor, or maybe a creative representation of stars glowing on her face (like how in old hacker movies the text on the screen would be 'projected' on the hacker).
I very rarely want to get an entire City subtheme but I'm strongly tempted to here. I hope they have City Blacktron subtheme next.
It’s a fine set, but I have to say that I do not like that this and the other sets in the subtheme are part of the City theme. City should be fantasy that reflects contemporary reality, not future speculation. Plus, Space being its own theme again needs to happen.
Looks much better in these pictures than the official ones. It looked basically two-dimensional.

Upon further inspection, I just can't read.
Hmmm, so that is that a tattoo of a constellation on her face. Interesting.
The only thing I don't get is the reason for this new wave to be branded under "City". Even the box design places "SPACE" in big words and beares a small "City" logo.
In other words, Was there a fear for bad sales if these were launched as a new theme? :|
Have it and am super happy with it. Well, beside the above mentioned drone storage problem. I attached the drone with a droid arm and stud with bar at the canopy.

I've been "parking" the drone by just attaching it to a wingtip stud. It's not especially elegant, but it at least looks like a place where there could be a little drone docking port or something.

Yeah, 60429 looks to be unusually good for a 4+ set, but it's still a 4+ set where the spaceship is built around a big Spaceship Hull Piece.

That's what I've been thinking--Futuron 2. Or maybe Exploriens was Futuron 2 and this is Futuron 3, though this is definitely a closer match with the color-coded spacesuits.

Exploriens wouldn't be a bad theme to soft reboot with sets like this. The original felt a bit juniorized with the big pieces, but those telescopes/cannons were awesome, and a good base would be great too. Give the figs varying colors like this, and dark blue cockpits (though perhaps not ideal in space where things are already very dark and occasionally extremely bright), and it'd be awesome.
My favorite new set of 2024! As noted, dare I say this is the perfect set? Accessible price, engaging play features, excellent minifig, swooshable design, and gorgeous printed pieces. More of this please LEGO!
I will buy 3 of these. Same with mini rover and mech.
This set looks awesome. I can’t wait to pick up a copy!
Personally, what I find most impressive about the nacelle opening mechanism is that it does not use any Technic pieces at all, it's a cleanly System build. I did not expect that before building it, but it was such a delight!
FYI the set designer is Aaron Newman from season 1 of Lego Masters US.

The 4+ set is pretty great (both as a parts pack and as an environment playset), but the engine/nacelle opening mechanism of this set is just delightful. Personally, my ideal set from this subtheme would be this ship with all the other stuff from the 4+ set.
"Interstellar" Spaceship! Awesom- .....oh.
Well... It's still nice.
It looks like a diplomatic courier ship, designed to carry small packets very fast.
Although that may just be a large amount of sci-fi books in my past
Whatever it is, I want it
Maybe the engine opens up to engage the FTL drive? If it's an interstellar spacecraft, it had better have one.

I'm reminded of Star Trek, with gold for command, blue for sciences/medicine, and red for engineering/security. At least in TOS, until the swapped the red and yellow starting with TNG.
Grabbed this one yesterday on impulse, and entirely concur with the review.
It's obviously not a "10/10, best set ever" compared to something like Rivendell, but judged according to its price and intention, it's a 10/10 set. Sleek, eminently swooshable, fantastically understated yet eye-catching color scheme, and affordable enough to army build if you are so inclined.
Gotta admit, I'm thinking of filling out a fighter wing if these go on sale at Amazon.
Close to perfect? Just replace the white 1x2x2/3 slope (placed next to the space logo tile) by a 1x2 jumper plate (black being my choice) for the drone to dock. Perfect. My top pick this year.
Yes yes, it's a great set, well-made, printed pieces, very swooshable.
That's why I ordered two. :)
I think we have the winner of the under $40 category for 2024. This might be the best single pilot spaceship Lego has ever made...

I've had a problem with the official set pictures for a while now, they use too many flat looking computer renders, even for fancy expensive sets where you'd think they'd put in a bit more effort.
I miss the 80s and 90s where they would build amazing dioramas to photograph the sets. Some of those pirate dioramas were awesome and contributed a lot to my love of that theme.

Honestly, I'd say this is the best of the £18/$20 sets released so far this year, with some stiff competition too.
I usually don't comment that often. But for this set I have to do! I think it is outstanding! One of those sets you look back a few years from now and wished you had purchased it! The moment I saw it I fell in love with it. Bought it as soon as I saw it on the shelves. What can you ask more of a sleek spacecraft set? Nothing in my opinion. "No space for the drone..." True, but I have a hard time to say anything ever so slightly negative about this set. It is just too good to be true... especially for this price. Don't care about the drone...

It is a fantastic set. The engine function is superb and inventive building technique. I swoosh it along the ground, open the engine and swoosh it into the air as if it’s escaping a planets gravitational pull and flying into orbit.

Mildly observing a possible design deficiency is not really b*tching in my book. I don’t really get the 1x1 white round tile that comes with the goatherd. If it didn’t, I simply wouldn’t have that mild observation.

I'd call it a continuation and this is what it should be, according to me.
I don't see a real return happening and would be happy with the occasional ICONS classic Space set.
I would like to think that a battle pack or whatever you want a call a collection of classic Lego Space figures in all sorts of colours would sell good, but maybe their research doesn't reflect that?
Just going to enjoy this year of celebrating Lego Space!

"I love the look of this set. I just hope all the "AFOLs" are enjoying the "return" of the Space theme they wanted so much ??"
Not nearly enough black, almost yellow, zero trans-red or trans-yellow. Not great, but I'll consider buying it.
@Ridgeheart:
They still make plenty of black, yellow, trans-red, and trans-yellow, so I'm good. And I have a whole bag full of new Blacktron minifigs from PAB.

Cheese? Like, not a hard cheese that can be sliced from a wheel (or they would have used a cheese wedge), but one of those sloppy, juicy cheeses that you have to eat out of a container. Or one of those dry, crumbly cheeses that you have to eat out of a container. Or one of those soft, formless cheeses that you have to eat out of a container. Guy's probably just carrying cheese around in his pockets, since there aren't any restaurants up on the mountain.
@Feroz:
70841 was very hard to find for a while after it released, as people were army-building the crap out of it. I don't remember it sticking around long enough to hit clearance prices, but that could just be that I wasn't walking by when the stickers were being applied, so I never saw them.

Sorry to read that. Lego really botched with the Movie 2 sets. 70841 was quite present in the Netherlands, but I couldn't find 70847 anywhere. And it seemed plenty in supply on the US version of the Lego website, but I couldn't order it on the Dutch one.
@Feroz:
As with SW Battle Packs, it really only took about a month for AFOLs to run their budgets, and then they were pretty easy to find for long enough that anyone who wanted a copy needed to be flat broke, in prison, or in a coma to have any excuse for not buying a copy. And in the US, very few sets actually hit clearance. When they do, it usually means they weren't very popular, or they would have sold out between the time production shut down and when stores needed the shelf space badly enough to be willing to mark prices down. I kinda wish I'd bought _more_ copies, but I did get a couple.
A brilliant set, I ordered it together with 60429 just before new year. For me it's absolutely a brave, elite pilot on a long scout mission. I'm charmed.
I attached the jetpack near a base of a wing, partially under the engine flap. Not perfect, but works for me.
As of batteries, well, two of them are enough for engaging an interstellar drive. That explains why in 60249 (edited: 60429 , thanks Feroz!) a charging station is on an asteroid and definitely open terrain too.

That charging station looks suspiciously like a garbage can and the crystal has morphed into a banana?
Jokes aside, I like your comment. :-)

The power of nature, you know, bioenergy put to the extreme ;-)
Looks like the Top Gun Darkstar. Great set, great review.
Almost perfect set!
Agree with the review that it is close to perfect.
And there is always a place for this class of spacecrafts in the space, just like we have two seated roasters on the road.

I had not noticed that, but you are absolutely right! Another strength."
The similarity of the shape of this ship and the Classic Space (and current space) logo was the first thing I noticed. I doubt it's a coincidence and would love to hear the designer's comments on this. (I recall reading somewhere that the canopy for 76832 was directly inspired by Classic Space sets.)
This is simply one of the best space ships lego has ever designed. Looking forward to a big brother ship, which should be a no brainer now.

It did go on sale/clearance for about $7-8. Like you, I regret getting only 3 copies.

Angus MacLane, who directed the film, said he made sure the cockpit canopy turned yellow in the film so they'd have to make the canopy for the set in trans-yellow. I have no idea if the shape is intended to resemble anything.
HOLY STARCOM!
The designer's Bricklist describes it as having a "rocket boost function," for what that's worth. https://brickset.com/sets/designer-Aaron-Newman

Design and function wise: yes!
Of course when it comes to the magnets I'll always link it to M-Tron: Power Deploy! :-)
@McKern
No problem!
Random feature request, but would it ever be possible to give users the option to review entire subthemes? I've been obsessed with this City Space subtheme for a few days and it's so well put together that I'm kind of in awe.
Like, there are the three worker categories, pilot/navigator, miner/engineer and science/research. And there are exactly five characters in each category, with the leader being in a darker shade of blue/green/orange from the rest and featuring a unique face print and a more elaborate backpack. The category leaders have gold gloves and the main leader wears an entirely gold suit. This is some amazing consistency across all sets.
I'm going to slowly pick up all of the City Space sets over the course of the year and I would love to see more this subtheme develop more in the future, maybe with space police/criminal factions, or maybe even civilian space sets. How neat would it be to expand the space station with civilian modules like a space bubble tea module or a space gaming arcade module?
This is a great set for £13 in Game.. im thinking of grabbing it
but gonna change the colour scheme abit and add the yellow version of that Cockpit piece & stick a Green lantern fig inside it..
Just ordered 2 of these. It is too cool looking to pass up.
As great as this set looks, the build is surprisingly better. It was so satisfying seeing it all come together- This is honestly in my personal running for one of the top $20 sets of all time. I urge everyone with so much as a slight interest in spacecrafts to build this set. It’s amazing and definitely well worth your time and money :)
