Result: What are your favourite smaller sets of 2023?
Posted by CapnRex101,
Although larger sets often monopolise attention, LEGO continues to produce plenty of smaller sets annually, as well as gifts-with-purchase.
We therefore ran polls to determine the most popular gift-with-purchase and set costing less than $40 released in 2023. Having received over 8000 votes between them, we are now ready to reveal the results...
What is your favourite gift-with-purchase of 2023?
Winner: 40580 Blacktron Cruiser - 1117 votes
- 40580 Blacktron Cruiser - 1117 votes
- 40586 Moving Truck - 529 votes
- 40581 BIONICLE Tahu and Takua - 396 votes
- 40595 Tribute to Galileo Galilei - 332 votes
- 40591 Death Star II - 301 votes
- 40596 Magic Maze - 296 votes
- 40601 Majisto's Magical Workshop - 285 votes
- 40588 Flowerpot - 220 votes
- 40603 Wintertime Carriage Ride - 203 votes
- 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie - 191 votes
- 40598 Gringotts Vault - 183 votes
- 40597 Scary Pirate Island - 99 votes
2023 began with two fantastic gifts-with-purchase, in the form of 40580 Blacktron Cruiser and 40581 BIONICLE Tahu and Takua. I am not at all surprised to see both rank highly in this poll and 40580 Blacktron Cruiser is a deserving winner, in my opinion. To me, the model strikes a perfect balance between honouring the original set and updating the design for 2023.
The performance of 40601 Majisto's Magical Workshop stands in contrast. Seventh place is a reasonable finish, but I think most would expect better from a set paying homage to the Castle theme. Others may disagree, but I much prefer when these nostalgia-based sets modernise the subject matter, rather than seeking to adhere as closely as possible to the original model.
Otherwise, I was pleased to see 40596 Magic Maze perform well, given the set's unusual and creative design. Similarly unexpected gifts-with-purchase would be welcome in the future, with some more tributes to classic sets as well, of course!
What is your favourite set of 2023, costing less than $40?
Winner: 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb - 556 votes
- 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb - 556 votes
- 40650 Land Rover Classic Defender - 534 votes
- 77012 Fighter Plane Chase - 477 votes
- 31136 Exotic Parrot - 383 votes
- 76918 McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM - 324 votes
- 31143 Birdhouse - 297 votes
- 76958 Dilophosaurus Ambush - 277 votes
- 75345 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack - 241 votes
- 60386 Recycling Truck - 218 votes
Historically, this category has been the domain of Speed Champions, as three or four sets from the theme were often nominated. However, it appears Indiana Jones has seized the mantle this year, as 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb won a close victory, with 77012 Fighter Plane Chase following in third place.
Both are brilliant sets, but 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb stands out in particular thanks to its remarkably low price of just £34.99, $39.99 or €39.99. 40650 Land Rover Classic Defender also provides outstanding value and came in second place, which is hardly surprising because minifigure-scale renditions of popular real-world vehicles are so obviously successful, between the Speed Champions range and sets like this one.
On the other hand, while these are undoubtedly excellent sets, I think this category was slightly weaker than normal in 2023. Remarkably few sets were actually nominated in the category and some themes that usually perform well with relatively small sets, such as Marvel and NINJAGO, were completely missing on this occasion.
Do you think these are deserving winners and do any of the results surprise you? Let us know in the comments.
The result of Brickset readers' favourite set of 2023 will be published soon, but there is still time to vote at the moment.

Totally agree that classic sets with a modern update are a great sweet spot, and I hope to see more in the coming years.
If you don't care about classic space, the Blacktron cruiser suuuuucks. I just happened to get one by chance and can't wait to flip it in a few years. It's not even worth building.
Likewise, I thought the Indiana Jones Escape from the Lost Tomb set sucked as well. It's hardly a tomb. It's just a flat base, a single wall and some admittedly cool jackal statutes.
Not even a comment about Moving Truck? Non-licensed and non-classic themes deserve the love too, especially for a second position!
Dang, did Dilophosaurus Ambush really end up that low? That's a bummer.
I hope this year we'll see more great small sets again. The new City Space theme has three that fit the category, which is not something you see much in a given subtheme anymore. Ninjago is absolutely stacked already, although the quality seems so-so.
No way! I was split on three picks for the set under $40, all of which I own... and the three of them are on the podium!
Great to see LEGO Indy get some love.

That would be my absolute top pick if the truck would be 8 stud wide. With 6 studs mostly because of the cockpit it looks so odd. That’s why I voted for the blacktron ship. It’s just a perfect gwp.
For someone who loves vintage stuff, both the Blacktron and Majisto's were very disappointing. Blacktron so much so I didn't even bother to get one. Stickers for everything? UGH. It might be an OK parts pack, and I'm really glad to see the minifig back since it also makes a great racing driver torso, but I just couldn't get into the set itself.
Majisto, well I think we all know what's wrong there.
I may have to pick up the moving truck on BL, it seems like a really nice small set but I couldn't afford a big purchase when it was available. Plus, it seems like they did a ton of work to fit everything inside it!

I have nothing to say about it really. I agree it is an excellent set and deserves to rank highly, but it does not really tell us anything new about what people want from gifts-with-purchase.
As for the under $40 sets, I can see why Indy got two of the top three. Both look to be fantastic sets at fantastic prices. I might even pick up the fighter to mod into a civilian plane for my city. Plus, the car is a solid build as well.
I still stand by my vote that the Land Rover is the best value set of the year. I'm not sure what kids consider pocket money these days, but it's less than a Speed Champion (albeit a good bit smaller), a wonderful build and minifig, and SO easy to mod. I've already turned mine into an outdoorsy vehicle with lightbar, canoe rack and canoe, and a tow hitch for a future MOC camper. Honestly, I wish they'd come out with this in multiple colors like the 6-wide Porsche 911. Dark green would, of course, be first up.
I'm sure someone has done it, but the exotic parrot should come out in the classic pirate colors.

To be able to buy them directly.
I’m just waiting for someone to roll 40598 in with 40601, because “it’s not fair that two Castle-ish GWPs are splitting the vote”…

It means people want old-fashioned / vintage city vehicles, and they want to be able to buy them directly!
Alrighty then. Both my picks came in first. Makes up for the second place finish with the minifig.

It’s not fair that Indiana Jones is splitting the under $40 vote by having 2 sets under $40. /s
LEGO Indy maybe the saddest story of the year, TBH. The three sets we got were great, but the Temple of Doom will never see the light of day, the sets that we DID get don’t seem to have sold well (I was in Target before Christmas and they were some of the only licensed sets still on the shelves) and everyone already forgot DIAL OF DESTINY came out less than a year ago.
Probably the last Indiana Jones sets that we get for a long time, if not forever. The property is as dead as it’s ever been.
Blacktron is a perfect GWP and its win is well deserved.
(remake of a classic, but still modern, looks good, good build etc...)
personally think 76265 is the best set under $40,
but the Lost Tomb is a worthy winner as a nice display piece with excelent value,
Every time I look at it I am amazed they didnt add a black base and quote to somehow double or triple its price
Voted for Blacktron Cruiser and Escape from the Lost Tomb, definitely my favorite sets in the these categories.
seeing Majisto so low makes me sad to see how it turned out.
I remember the Excitement when it was first rumoured. and hoping for it to follow the Forestmen's Hideout, Blacktron Cruiser and Tahu as a modern re-imagining of a classic, to then see it turn out looking a bit more like a mess.
Glad I pulled the trigger on Rivendell when able to triple up on Blacktron, Tahu and a vip part pack, rather than wait for Majisto as I had originally planned.
This is appropriate timing for me, as I just placed an order that included 77013. Glad to see that 77012 (and 40580, in the GWP poll) placed highly as well.
So glad to have more than one of these.
I'm surprised how low 40588 Flowerpot ranked, given the popularity of the Botanicals line.
For Favorite GWP, I believe the Blacktron Cruiser had a lock on the win; it’s a great-looking set, it goes with the modernized Galaxy Explorer, and the nostalgia-factor is simply too high. I voted 6487483: Marvel Taxi because I think it complements Avengers Tower nicely, but I knew the Cruiser would take the win.
For Favorite Set Under $40, I voted 76245: Ghost Rider Mech & Bike because it doesn’t get more badass than Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider in a Hell Mech on a mech-sized Hell Cycle. The 501st Clone Trooper Battle Pack comes very close, and the addition of a mummy to Escape from the Lost Tomb gives it that shot of excitement it needs to be more than a display piece. The idea of Fighter Plane Chase is a good one but the aircraft is just too wonky, which I guess comes from not being accustomed to designing real-world military aircraft.
Thank you, Indy, for making sure pointless, boring cars didn't get fawned over again this year!

Have you built any of the Speed Champions sets?
Some of them are really good, not a car guy myself, but got 76895 a few years back on discount, and was blown away with its detail, smoothness and how some of it is put together
That Blacktron GWP is bad. I got two of them, driven by nostalgia, and it's a bad ship design, its too long, too flimsy and the cargo bay is closed with flag pieces in an unusall way and these flags won't stay in place (not to mention the ugly stickers). It's a nice parts pack, but as a model it is far from perfect in every aspect. Im still mad at how bad it is. The Indiana Jones Tomb on the other hand is the best value Ive seen in a while from regular lego set. Here we have good figs, lots of pieces, hidden stuff to play with and reasonable stickers. On a side note- I happen to shine blacklight in this set and there are two different orange types of plastic- one stays dark and the other reacts with blacklight. Kind of strange.

Honestly LEGO didn't put any effort into advertising the theme at all, compared to the big bang status the original Indiana Jones sets had (big waves, big LEGO Club spots, TWO tie-in video games). Maybe LEGO knew Dial of Destiny would be "just okay" (I finally watched it over Christmas on Disney+ with my family and I do have to admit it is better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at least), or maybe they were doing Indiana Jones as some sort of obligation to Disney/Lucasfilm. The sets they did design and release were solid, but without any solid marketing push I am not surprised to see they are failing to gain attention.
(To be honest I don't know if Disney did their job in advertising the movie as well... we got the trailers and some TV spots but the marketing push felt a lot less memorable than even Crystal Skull's marketing. It would be easy for most of the general audience to forget that there was a new Indiana Jones movie in theaters last year.)
I feel a much bigger and more advertised Indiana Jones wave would have gained more attention. There are still many scenes from the franchise that LEGO has missed out on (the train chase with young Indy in The Last Crusade for example). However by playing it safe, LEGO got lukewarm response in turn not helped by the tie-in movie not generating much buzz. We are getting the Bethesda Indiana Jones game soon, so maybe that can ignite some buzz for the franchise... just a few years to late to help the LEGO sets I guess.
Now if Mattel didn't have their own Mega brand, one has to wonder what LEGO would have done had they been able to do say building sets for Barbie if they really wanted to tie into one of last year's big films... It doesn't help though that title of huge toy-genic film goes to one of LEGO's big competitors.
Oh, no, it's happening again. The under-$40 list is turning into a shopping list in my head.

I mean, there were 271 eligible sets, so just the fact that it was on the poll at all means it beat out 262 of them, and then even out of those final nine it beat a Star War and the very popular recycling truck. As far as I'm concerned, that's the opposite of a bummer.

Try leaving out the Cargo section?
I find it makes a nice Starfighter type craft in that configuration.
I need that Land Rover for my collection!
Indiana Jones is quite deserving of the win! The sets are well designed, and the amount of stuff you get, especially in the Lost Tomb is fantastic. The Lost Tomb also got my vote because it balanced play and display at a very affordable price. I hope the Tantive IV hallway set will do the same when it releases. As to Indiana Jones ending, I unfortunately agree that we will probably not see any more sets. They haven't moved at all off shelves after the initial release, not even with the Christmas rush. Although well selling sets like the bonsai didn't move either.

The really sad story was Dial of Destiny and how shite it was. I though crystal skull was bad enough...
But yes, as you said, the franchise is dead so that's it for Indy :-(
As for Blacktron, I'm too old for that. In my time Space was grey and blue, not black. As a set is mediocre, easily worse than half the sets on that list. But hey, free parts...
77013????????? That set was AWFUL comparded to old one. It looks unfinished, like they designed much more expesnive set and cut it on half.
I agree that is was weaker than normal, I had a hard time choosing a set that stood out to me in that category. I'd give Tales of the Space Age honorable mention--that was the one I wanted to vote for in this category, but it was $50, not $40. There were very good sets, but none really felt great. The winner was a good choice--quite a bargain for what you're getting.
yes! i'm happy both Indiana Jones sets are up there because they deserve to be.

What does that have to do with rigging the vote so Castle always beats Bionicle?

I mean, let’s be honest, there. One and a third games. One and a half, tops.
"Maybe LEGO knew Dial of Destiny would be "just okay" (I finally watched it over Christmas on Disney+ with my family and I do have to admit it is better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at least)…"
No. No, no no, no, no, wrong. Yes, given how frequently Indy seems to get betrayed by trusted friends, it was an interesting twist to see him ending up having to work with someone who openly had no interest in cooperating, but the plot was too messy. She’s the only person who knows how to find all the keys to locating this great treasure, and yet she immediately starts taking bids on each and every item as soon as it comes in contact with her hands? If you know where to find the four torn up pieces of a $10,000 bill, do you auction off each scrap for a few Benjamins, or you you take the complete set to the nearest bank and cash in big time?
Then they ended up not accomplishing a single thing by going back in time. They didn’t save anyone, they didn’t stop anyone, and things would have played out pretty much the same way if they sat at home watching TV the whole time. And what then is the point of the device, if the person who designed it never planned for it to work as everyone assumed? Your city is fighting for its very survival, and you invent a fantastical device that lets time-traveling tourists come back and say hello? Basically, they put all their effort into making sure the red herring worked, so you wouldn’t guess the twist, and absolutely no effort into making sure the twist worked or was even justifiable. I rank it slightly higher than the Transylvania episode of Young Indy, and then only because they killed Mutt.
GWP result is really unsurprising, this was one completely obvious category. Now I’m expecting what will be the result of all sets :-)
Voted for both winners, and just realized, to my surprise, that they are both still built for display. They are excellent.
To those saying Blacktron was bad--what was bad about it? Great minifig, fun build, I think awesome parts including the canopy, container, large flags, updated accessories, black wings, etc. Then you have the high nostalgia factor. Sure, stickers are a bummer, but it was a *freebie*.
@PurpleDave Raiders would have ended the exact same as well had Indiana stayed home to listen to the radio. Beloq and the Germans would eventually have found the Ark, then opened it on that desolate island only to have all their faces melted off. If anything the Ark potentially making it to Berlin then melting Hitler's face off as he tried to open it would have done even more good, had Indy not gotten involved.
Yeah the Blacktron one winning is really not a surprise

I'd say the second place is a surprise to me. In the related comments section I thought people were more vocal about the Bionicle set and there were less that mentioned the moving truck.
I'd be interested to know who bought the moving truck because it belongs with the Jazz Club. Given the content of the truck one could say it's also interesting for owners of the Boutique Hotel. And possible reason number three: the taxi, moving truck and retro food truck seem to form a cool collection on their own. More please!
If it wasn't for the first Space Police sets I wouldn't have had any Blacktron Minifigs. I went from classic Space to Futuron and skipped Blacktron. So I didn't feel the need to try to get the Blacktron Cruiser.
I had no dog in the other poll, so I went with Polly the parrot. Look and behold: two dogs raising their paws!
Enough silly stuff, congratulations to the winners!

What is THAT? The Blacktron forces are storming our gates right now, they demand to win by an even HIGHER margin. Blacktron will consume us all! Praise Tahu mighty Spirit of Fire, he is our only hope to stop the invading Blacktron army.

Pleased to see that both my faves for these categories won! The blacktron cruiser's a great set - to those saying otherwise, what don't you like exactly? There are stickers yes, but only 5 of them, which isn't much of a burden given it's a freebie. Those complaining about the look - leave out the cargo section, it looks much better without it. If it had been a retail set I'd probably have bought 3 or 4 of them, and it works very well alongside the Galaxy Explorer.
As for Indy; well if the rumours are true that the 3 sets are all we're getting well they are 3 great sets, and I'm not remotely surprised to see both the small ones on the podium here. The Dial of Destiny was marketed so badly here that I wasn't aware it had been released until seeing an ad on Disney+ a few months ago, which speaks volumes. Not got round to watching it yet - I do hope it's better than the crystal skull but that's not a high bar to clear...
Speed Champs didn't have a great year IMO. The best one was the F1LM but that was in a twin-pack, and whilst the Solus had some amazing techniques in it, it isn't a car that many people care about (or even know about). Of the individual releases, I'd say the Pagani was the best; but it wasn't ground-breaking in a way that a few have been in recent years. Much like Technic - it's been a good year for new parts there, not so much for sets.

I own the old one and it didn't look that much more finished (by the look of things). The new one, however, does look a lot bigger.
It was only when I looked at the images again I did notice the new one has surprisingly few snakes though. The old one could be littered with it, although it had less room for them to be on a floor.

Yes, you do; it's a great set. In fact, I was going to vote for it until I saw 77012 was in the running.
Ah yes, the “I hate Blacktron and Indiana Jones movies” comment thread.
At least there’s still love out there for generally great Lego set design and good value for money!
Person: "This is the set *I* like for the reasons that *I* like it."
Other Person: "Here's why *you're* wrong about *your* opinion about the thing that *you* like for the reasons *you* like it."
Go brick yourself!
Since most prices have gone up, I suggest making the catagory “under 50€/$. Or I even prefer more price catagories like the holiday gift guide: under 20, 20-50, 50-100, 100-200, 200 and up.
Nice to the Blacktron GWP win, hoping we see more Blacktron sets in the future.
I voted for the mclarens, although in € it was already €50 instead of the $40.

Thanks for the tip; I'm sure the builds are indeed great, with some lovely techniques, but I can get a feeling of satisfying building from plenty of other sets without resorting to building something from a theme I fundamentally disagree with.
I did find it surprising how few sets as a % fell under the $40 threshold, but I've no idea if that's a trend as I don't often buy that many smaller/play sets. Is there an easy way to look at prices? Be interesting to see a bell curve.
While I don't personally agree, the Blacktron Cruiser is well deserving of the first place (it was a full print / zero stickers away from being my favorite). The Temple (and the plane chase on 3rd place) shows clearly we have a love for adventures - we most likely want it without a franchise so the price can be halfway decent.

There are definitely advantages to dividing the polls into additional categories, but we like to publish them between Christmas and New Year, so there are only six days available, including a period for nominations.
Maybe we will adjust the format a little next year though.

Would've opted to get the Blacktron Cruiser if it wasn't so reliant on stickers, which I absolutely hate. Since I already own a few OG Blacktron figs, this lookalike didn't manage to win me over to shill out the extra dough on Lego. That said, it is nice nostalgia bait, but the moving truck just looks nicer to me (and yes, it has stickers too, but you can easily leave those off without it hurting the overall aesthetic of the set).
Also, am I the only one who feels some of these GWPs are a lot better than most retail sets under $ 40?
If the other Indy set, the Temple gets the top spot or close, shows you how loved the Indiana Jones theme is.
I assume the sales were low on all the sets but like me, who bought EVERY Indy set Lego made, it's a shame they never did not ONE Dial of Destiny set. Not one. Unbelievable. Like you'd think the Tuk-Tuk chase, or the tomb of Archimedes with some play features would've been sweet.
Ah, I'm still depressed that most probably, we'll never see another Indy set from Lego.
Just gotta' Moc the big scenes they never made (Crusade's train, Petra/traps/grail, tank battle and Dial's opening motorbike chase, Tuk-Tuk chase, NYC astronaut parade, Archimedes Tomb, underwater ship ruins w/eels, and the big daddy bomber vs. Roman Warship w/ Archimedes weapons).
Interestingly, the free market has a different assessment.
The highest resale prices are for the Death Star and Gringotts.
The lowest resale is for the Scary Island followed by Bonc and the Magic Maze.

Possibly due to lower numbers out there and higher and/or more specific original buy requirements?
I myself voted for the excellent moving truck.

Those two come from licensed themes, and there are a lot of completists out there for both. There are far fewer active completists for legacy themes. I missed Scary Island, and had to pick it up at a show, so I'm actually thankful that the resale value is low. The maze, I just skipped.
Majisto came in Australia with a ridiculous qualifying price. Since I have the original it was an easy pass.
I can see why Blacktron Cruiser won, although I voted for Moving Truck. Regardless, I'm happy it received the recognition it deserves with a 2nd place.
As for the other poll, I voted for Escape from the Lost Tomb. As a fun concept, I can totally see Indy driving the Land Rover.
