BrickLink Designer Program Series 4 voting open

Posted by ,

While the five BrickLink Designer Program Series 1 sets will be available for pre-order later this week, the voting for Series 4 is now open.

As always, there are some extraordinary designs among the submissions, including plenty paying homage to classic themes, as well as trains and spectacular buildings, which show off various styles of architecture.

Personally, I am drawn to the Elven Castle by NicolasCarlier, pictured above, but there are over 200 submissions to choose from and lots are excellent. View them all and cast your votes here.

Which potential sets received your votes? Let us know in the comments.

Seriously, enough with the castles. How many times are people going to submit the same idea?

Gravatar

I am guessing the winners will be trains, castle, and fantasy castle.

Crikey. So many to choose from. Too many possibly. Could end in a very diluted vote or many simply not getting a look in. Good luck to all those who put in the effort though. Congrats for getting this far.

Two clear favorites:
* Alternate Futures by Jazlecraz
* Sushi Restaurant by Brickproject

Several more that are quite nice and original, a bunch that are fine MOCs but don't interest me at all. But also quite a number that make me wonder why someone would submit it. And one that I can only hope is purely meant as a joke....

By in Germany,

LIFE OF PERSIA, the Sushi restaurant and the Galactic City are the only ones i voted with "love it". All Castle or Western related are not for me.
Where are the space moc people these days!? I´d love to vote for a giant 3000 piece sci-fi spaceship with neon colours! Maybe an UCS Deepfreeze defender?! Or the ultimate Ultra-core-Magnetizer!?
I wish so badly that LEGO is going to revisit the best classic space themes like Blacktron II, M-Tron, Ice Planet, Spyrious, Space Police, and so on and modifies them with todays building techniques.

By in United States,

I'm fond of the Shishi-Odoshi Fountain myself. A lot of the builds showcased here are just too big for me to buy or display, and I think this one strikes a good balance.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Not sure what the point of voting is. It's not like I'll ever be able to afford any of them.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Quite an overwhelming choice. Lots of very nice looking buildings, but I wouldn't know what to choose. Glad I didn't put a lot of effort in submitting anything this time.
One reason I'm not eager on picking anything is that the part count often is very high, and seeing the prices of BDP3, I'm pretty sure I won't be buying anything from BDP4.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lots of nice MoCs but nothing I want as a set. I would have voted for the garbage truck but Lego already did a really nice one in the City line, so that feels a superfluous.

By in United States,

I'm digging these:
- Submarine Explorer (nice steam-punk look, interesting, good change of pace).
- Radio Station Brick FM (excellent art-deco look. THIS is the real winner here. Can really bring interest to the modular line).
- Egypt Explorers (modular is nice plus the traps are fun and simple and could bring back the Adventurers line, since we know Lego has abandoned Indy).
- City Aquarium (interesting building, excellent interior details and you can pull out the aquarium to enjoy viewing. ANOTHER to bring more interest to the modulars).
- Atlantis Research Base (simple but nice modules and the sea-floor terrain looks lush and vibrant).
- Empire Train (nice art-deco look and mono-rail/tram surrounding it could add a nice change of pace to the modular line).

Maybe: Hot Rod Space Taxi (has that Fifth Element/Heavy Metal look, like the shaping but I put it as a maybe since it needs more play-features, interiors detailing, and some more details on the exterior as well).
Could've been more interesting: I like the 'idea' of the Trojan Horse but the execution here looks like a simple chocolate Easter confection.

Best way to approach it is to save a little each week or month, then you can get the sets you'd like.
Been doing this the past couple years now, really helped get the sets I really wanted in my collection without breaking the bank.

Does that justify the plethora of castles we’ve received in recent years? After a certain point, it’s time to make room for other ideas.

It's almost like...we want castles... Who'd have thunk?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it worth even scolling them all? most sets seem like they expensive compared to lego prices.?

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Sunset Ranch and Sushi Restaurant are gorgeous models and stand apart from the rest of the castles, castles, castles.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Seems like TLG should consider reviving the Castle theme as there's apparently a lot of interest, just as with Classic Space. @10305 Lion Knights' Castle was a fantastic set but out of my price range and too large for my home. Sets around the size of @21325 Medieval Blacksmith are about the most my wallet and shelf space can handle. I'd welcome a series of well designed smaller Castle sets with the flagship set being in the 2000 piece range.

That said, I've found that 2 of the 3 sets I've bought through the BrickLink Designer Program have been a bit overpriced and not of the construction quality of official LEGO sets.

All - I like that they give us an opportunity to provide feedback before they choose which 5 make the cut. I haven’t looked over Series 4 yet but am excited to do so. I’m enjoying the fact that multiple series are queuing up. This helps me prioritize those sets that most speak to me. My appetite often exceeds my budget. :o). Additionally, getting an idea on pricing via Series 1 helps me forecast what to expect for these next series. I really like the mountain fortress but I may not be able to get this and the forthcoming forest stronghold.

We've gotten the lion Knights castle, blacksmith & creator 3in1 castle. That's 3, hardly a plethora. If u include gwps we get the little forestman treehouse and a tiny microscale castle. Disney sets or Harry Potter don't count, those are their own theme

We get 5 castles in about as many years and you think they make too many?

Gravatar

This time I'm making a point of voting for smaller, more affordable entries. There's only so many 4,000-piece sets a person needs.

@WizardOfOss:
Now I'm really curious which one you think is a joke, but I'm not going to ask you to post it publicly. I see one that, having built a very accurate MOC myself, raises an eyebrow, and that mech looks someone's trying to be the first person on BDP to hit a five-figure price tag.

Anyways, none of these look like something I'd actually want to buy. The Brickstralia one, however, I do plan to study a bit, since it could help me with a fairly demented project I've had in mind for a while.

You guys need to let go of castle and the trains and stuff.

You also just got a huge $400 castle and another one or two in an upcoming wave, as well as like 2 train stations and a huge train. I think other projects deserve a chance.

That being said, only four really caught my eye including

Elven Castle
Jonas' Viking Ship
Sunset Ranch
Radio Station - Brick FM

Good guess....

What does the negative vote (the not for me emoji) do?

Would be nice to see some smaller £50ish sets get through but I guess it probably isn't financially viable for these hand picked type sets?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow, there's some random stuff in there! Nothing I would want as a set though.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

A lot of copy paste ideas here
I'm99% sure 2 mediaeval stuff will pass, same with a house/complex 2 will pass, and last will be some small boring set

There is a couple of very unique and super interesting project in here, but the vast majority is stuff we already got/are going to get

Gravatar

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Gravity Racers! Cute design and probably one of the few that I could afford. Most of them seem to have a huge parts count, I can't imagine what the prices will be.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The only one I'd buy without hesitation is 'Stephenson's Rocket'.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So many great-looking sets.
So many build designers that need to work on significantly reducing their piece count. Too many 1x1 tiles of various colors, or Plant Plate, Round 1 x 1 with 3 Leaves everywhere. Sure, it looks great... But "do more with less" is how Lego sets work to make them feasible. Abstract things out. Smaller base around it. Etc.

...If I were to spend money for all those 1x1 tiles, I'd get Rivendell (and a second mortgage).

Example: Adventure-Diorama – The Dragon Temple Quest. Love it, great idea and all that. But way too many tiles. Which also wreck the "play" of the set since you don't have studs to stand figures. That rocky road on the big jungle area? Hint at it with just a few of them. Ruin up the ruins on the smaller one more so it's not all tiles.

I like that one, but I don't really want all the extras, they distract from what should be a really nice model of the rocket on its own

It’s all feedback to let LEGO know how folks feel. I would surmise that people will more often click the happy emoji for sets they like than the frown for those they don’t. But it’s all good data for them to help make their decisions. I usually try to vote on every set but the gui is clugy and I’m lazy so…

More like , enough with modular buildings, winter cottages etc which are already yearly releases for a decade, unlike castles , which had a big pause from 2014 until like 2020.

Gravatar

So if all 30000 sell, that implies there are 30,000,000,000,000 Castle fans. That is a lot aliens interested in Castle.

30000 is enough for one each for about 0.00035% of the world's population.

I'm creating a castle display right now, and with that being said there are some great entires in this. The challenge I think is to make one that DOESN'T look like the OG designer castle, Castle in the Forest.

Lot of castles on here, but some that aren't extremely interesting. But, I didn't submit one, so I can't say too much can I?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I thought the retro modular building was an interesting self-imposed challenge.

As for the grey castles, maybe someone should do one in yellow (or tan, which as I understand it would have been the choice for 375-2 had tan bricks been around at the time). Or red, white and yellow like 00-1.

I suppose I should reiterate so you can get hung up on something other than my clear and obvious exaggeration.
What I meant is, if the only new sets released are $400 castles, then not many castle fans will be able to actually enjoy them. I get it, castle = afols nowadays, and afols = big display sets (apparently), but that doesn't really compute with all the "it's still just a toy for kids" comments you read on Brickset, usually used to shut down other complaints.

By in United States,

Radio station – I like elements of both of them.

For me, I'd combine the best of the two, but both as I see it need the following:

* A newsroom area.
* A small production studio.
* Area for a sales representative or two.
* Maybe an office for the station manager.

In other words, a setup not unlike the sitcom "WKRP In Cincinnati," but a modern take on it rather than a 50s/60s retro that we often see with the modular buildings. (For instance, a computer with the entire playlist along with how else a modern on-air studio looks, laptops for the sales rep, the office with a computer for the station manager, modern phone for the receptionist, etc.)

Can still include the characters, like Johnny Fever, Venus Flytrap, Andy Travis, Arthur Carlson, Les Nesmann, Bailey Quarters, Jennifer Marlowe and Herb Tarlek, but just 2020s versions of them.

Just my two cents worth.

Imho I don't even like those castles. Too expensive, hard to find only lego exclusive (= no dicount) or BDP (another wat to say lego exclusive, since Lego owns BL). I would like to see a retail castle series, not too childish, well designed. A sweet spot between a collector item and a child toy.

Talking about creativity, could you give us 5 good alternatives to castle for BDP? You don't need to design them only give us titles and a brief description of the set.

Imho I consider replicas of real objects like polaroid, typewriter, completely useless and boring sets.
I don't even like all the IP's projects for the IDEAS series. It's not creativity if you lean on an IP.

I saw also the new castle village market, presented yesterday. I'm the only one that thinks it's really terrible? the color scheme is really a punch in the face. Ok red, reminiscence of the guarded inn. but olive + sand + red is really bad!

By in Finland,

That was a very large and diverse set of entries! Personally I liked most the amazing Opera house and the Odeon theatre entries. It would be about time that in either through these programs or in the regular Modular Building series we would get a large, traditional entertainment institution like an opera house or classic theatre. The Jazz Club was a small nod to this direction, and also the Museum was very good and needed, but real institutions of the classic arts are still missing...
