LEGO teases Dungeons & Dragons Ideas set!

Posted by ,

LEGO Ideas held a Dungeons & Dragons contest towards the end of 2022, revealing the winner as Dragon's Keep: Journey's End by BoltBricks just over a year ago.

It seems we are close to the final product being announced, as LEGO has published a teaser on social media today, showing several elements trapped in a Gelatinous Cube! I expect they will be parts in the upcoming set.

Watch the short video below and look out for more information very soon...

By in United Kingdom,

I'm so excited for this one! Love D&D, the fan model looks gorgeous, and it'll make a great addition to medieval-style builds.

By in United States,

Given Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro's recent actions, LEGO DND has aged like milk. I'm expecting the set to be good, the Honor Among Thieves movie was surprisingly decent for a game adaptation, it's a shame the higher ups sunk the brand's reputation.

By in United States,

Never played DnD, and I probably never will unless my best friend is the Dungeon Master (she's the only one I trust to not employ zombies and witchcraft).
I'd be interested to see what new minifigure parts come out of it though.

By in United States,

SO excited for this. I played as a kid and (sadly) haven't played in many years, but am so excited for this set!!!
I'm sure its too much to ask for a cool limited edition GWP, like a Beholder, or Mimic, or something not included in the set would be a bonus too!

By in United States,

Once again, I wish they had unveiled this and the Medieval Market prior to BLDP Series 1. But it is what it is. The movie was so surprisingly good and there is clearly a large fan base. I can’t wait for this set. 2023/2024 has been spectacular for Castle fans.

I’m almost as excited for this set as the guaranteed complaints about its open back, olive green, and any other changes since the Ideas submission. :o)

Play Talisman. It's a simplified version of D&D... it's not very well balanced, but can be a lot of fun with a bunch of friends.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Knowing Lego they will forget it's a display set and change that great dragon that is wrapped around the tower and make it playable, completely losing the feel of the original submission.

The set had leaked, and they changed it a lot. The dragon is green!

but the dragon in the original submission IS playable. there's literally a picture of it off the tower in the original submission, and a picture of the tower sans dragon

It also won't run on LEGO track, the engine will be too toy-like, and won't be detailed enough... :p

I have seen 2 pictures of the original submission: one with red dragon and dark blue tavern roofs and one with green dragon and red tavern roofs (I prefer green dragon but the other one is very good as well). I have not been able to find the leaked picture you mentioned. Either way, we should be fixed very soon.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The original submission didn’t include a gelatinous cube, but one is featured in this teaser. I wonder if there’ll be one in the set and if so, how it’ll be done.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Gelatinous Cubes. Handy for scraping up any lost LEGO elements in a conveniently 10ft wide room. Not so handy for retrieving said elements after cleanup.

Edit: Just perused the leaked images. I gotta say, I'm surprised that LEGO put so many Invisible Stalkers in the set. And probably just to drive up the price!

(This has been an attempt at a joke)

Furthermore, the dragon in the leak is actually red...
It's not wrapped around the tower and, eyeballing it, it won't be able to. The picture is of pretty bad quality though.

it makes sense that the dragon would be red, considering it's for D&D's 50th birthday

If I'm not mistaken most dragons on early D&D core products (books and boxes) covers were red: 1st edition Monster Manual, the different iterations of the Basic box (Moldvay, B/X, BECMI), the second edition AD&D introduction box...

Oh man, I just got back into the DnD flow for the oneshot we'll be having tomorrow! Perfect timing. I would love it to be unveiled tomorrow so we can all admire it after the session is over!

Also it better come with an official LEGO-themed set of dice or I'm rebelling :P

Is there a gazebo in the set? If so, can it be killed?

I like the Cube's victim's shield.... a Beholder. Would REALLY love to see a series of D&D LEGO sets.

Gravatar

I'm looking forward to seeing better images of the set! I don't have the money nor the connection to DnD, but I enjoy Lego fantasy. I'm more excited about the rumored DnD CMF since that will be far more affordable.

A gazebo, you say? What's it doing?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Heh. This reminds me of a cool display piece they came out with for the movie action figure line. They did a Gelatinous Cube that was just a hollow box with a matching armature that you could use to mount the action figure in the center of the cube, like they'd been ingested. If I'd been interested in buying the action figures, I probably would have picked that up as well. As it is, I stuck to the transforming d20 dice.

@TheLastJedi:
There's a Beholder hiding in the back right of the leaked image. Failing that, I came up with my own minifig-scale design about nine months ago, and I've already built a dozen versions.

Here's mine modded from an inverted 76205: https://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/AmperZand/Fantasy/beholder.jpg
Relative to a minifigure, it's bordering on size H, so per the RAW, too big. Maybe it's the beneficiary of an enlarge spell!

It's a good thing I don't have the space for this, or I would need a critical success on my Will saving throw. Also, I've escaped the gazebo, but it's really dark where I am so I cast Magic Missile... at the darkness!

I went old-school with my design, with a spherical body that's scaled to be 8' diameter vs a 6' tall minifig. I've only posted pictures of six of them. When the weather warms up, I need to get photos of the rest, which include one that's overgrown by living in a swamp, a Minion Beholder, a zom-beholder, a Batman Beholder, and OG Blacktron Spyball A-Unit and B-Unit. I'm also getting parts to build a Cave Beholder, a Beach Bum Beholder, and a Bee-holder.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Zander:
Mine are supposed to be standard Beholders. I can’t find the reference, but I think they’re supposed to be 8’ in diameter. A minifig stands 12 plates tall, so an easy reference is two plates per foot. My design is 18 plates in diameter, which would then equate to 9’. There’s a variant called an Elder Orb that’s 15’ in diameter, so 30 plates. By my count, yours is about 25 plates wide. It’s a bit on the small side, but closer than it is to the basic breed.

Funnily enough, even though I have heard such a lot about D&D over the years, and seen it in action on TBBT, and even though it sounds as if it was right up my street, I have never played it myself.

I'm in exactly the same situation. I love D&D as well (just played on Sunday night!), and was very excited about this set. But at that price? Nope. That's frustrating to be exactly in the middle of the Venn diagram of "Lego adult collector" and "D&D fan" and to get pushed out on price.

Engage OCD mode for people getting phrases wrong....

And looking into it, I'm correct that the original term is 'up my/your alley', as it was used as a idiom for 'within ones province', meaning, their area of expertise as far back as the 1600's.

In literature it was first recorded in Mildred Gilman's 1931 novel, Sob Sister, that also became a movie of the same title. "Its about time a good murder broke out, and this one is right up your alley". It was later used by Dale Carnegie in his famous 1936 book 'How to win friends and influence people', "Bridge will be a cinch for you, its right up your alley". Its these that are said to have popularised the phrase to the masses.

The 'up my street' version, seems to have started to come about after WW2 and was seen as a mistranslation of alley by none native English speakers.

So while I'll accept that in certain areas 'up my street' is acceptable alternative, the original and more commonly used and widespread term is 'up my alley'.

/end rant. lol

Quite possibly. I have a thread about it on Eurobricks and it’s in the first 12 images on Google if you search for ‘Lego beholder’.
Your beholders are very cool. I especially like that they are the right size and the way you did the eye-stalks.

@AustinPowers, Dictionaries list ‘alley’ as chiefly US English and ‘street’ as chiefly UK. So you’re not wrong. I say ‘street’ and did even when I lived in the US. People understood what I meant.

I am not sure where you found this information, but 'down your street', so a close variation, appears in Brideshead Revisited, published in 1945. Somehow I doubt Evelyn Waugh created the version of the phrase with 'street', so presumably it goes back at least a couple of decades earlier.

Personally, I would consider both versions of the phrase common, but I have no reason to doubt that 'up my/your alley' was earlier.

I actually do like the modern look, but I wasn’t aware they had evolved beyond basic spheres until I got started on mine, and now that I’ve got the design fairly stabilized, it’s just so easy to keep making new variants (like Pete Reid’s turtles). Maybe a little too easy. They run about $30 to build, and I’ve now ordered parts to build 13-15. That’s more than this set is going to cost. That’s actually Barad-dûr money!

Linguistics here...

Oxford English Dictionary is usually the definitive resource for these etymological discussions. Looks like "street" the WORD has its modern sense around the 1600s with earlier extinct(ish) variants. The PHRASE is documented first with street, then with alley. BUT both have been in use for 100+ years and are equally real and valid uses of language. There's not one that's "more" correct linguistically, just within the bounds of fashion and (hopefully well-intentioned) internet squabbling.

to be up (down, in) one's street: to be well suited to one's tastes, interests, or abilities (cf. to be (right) up (also down) one's alley at alley n.1 Phrases).

Cubes are 100% edible after they die, but first you must use some sort of basic solution to neutralize the acid. When I go adventuring, I usually carry some potash in my bag of spices for this exact use. Once the cube is chopped into smaller cubes and neutralized you can heat it and it will melt down into a nice soup. You can season it or fill it with meats to flavour the cube, once removed from the heat you can leave to cool down and it will turn back into a jelly like substance. Very similar to aspic! Stay safe adventurers, and remember to stay delicious in dungeon.

You can season it or fill it with meats to flavour the cube, once removed from the heat you can leave to cool down and it will turn back into a jelly like substance. Very similar to aspic! Stay safe adventurers, and remember to stay delicious in dungeon."

This was the Gello Monster in Dragon (magazine) 156’s "Not Necessarily the Monstrous Compendium" section.

Some Gelatinous Cubes had absorbed a large shipment of gelatin dessert mixes, mostly neutralizing their digestive acids, and giving them the color and flavor of whichever gelatin mix they had absorbed.

One could still be engulfed and suffocated to death - which would happen long before the weakened digestive acids broke you down - but if you rolled successfully you could execute a snarf attack and safely eat the cube while it was still ‘alive’.

Seems like a long time between tease and reveal, I thought I that it was usually only a day or two, or that that they do at least another tease.

Isn't there a manga or anime about that?"

Yup, literally called Delicious in Dungeon. Animes airing on Netflix right now."

Not much of an anime person myself, but my sister encouraged me to watch this one and it's been pretty fun this far.

Exactly, I'm also eagerly awaiting the reveal. For example, there was only 1 day between the teaser and reveal of Rivendell.

Ah…Gelatinous Cubes…fantastic, and tasty if you can find ‘em in: Lemon, Strawberry, Lime, Orange, Grape…not crazy about Cherry or Raspberry…:) Ironically, waaaaaay back when I use to get “Dragon Magazine”; one of April Fool’s issue monsters was “Gelatinous Cube, Flavored”. They were listed as ‘tiny’ size wise, and…well; if the standard ‘cube’ is unto “The Blob”, then the flavored version was unto “The Stuff”…shudders…

Also: since this is a Lego Gelatinous Cube…shouldn’t it have studs on top…I mean, again LEGO. GELATINOUS. CUBE…It’s NOT ‘SNOT’.:D

Oh, I also heard about the D&D CMF set; and I’m disappointed…according to the leaked list; not ONE figure based on the classic 80’s cartoon…just daft…:|

"Never played DnD, and I probably never will unless my best friend is the Dungeon Master (she's the only one I trust to not employ zombies and witchcraft).
I'd be interested to see what new minifigure parts come out of it though."

I'm happy to tell you that zombies and witches don't exist in real life. You have nothing to fear.

@brick_r:
I'm pretty sure that's the onliest time I've ever known someone to refer to that animated series as "classic". I remember wanting to watch it so bad as a kid, but I wasn't allowed to. And it took all of about one episode to lose my interest.
