Friends reached the surface of Mars in January, with the release of 42605 Mars Space Base and Rocket. Another space-based set has today been revealed.

42602 Space Research Rover will be released on April 1st, containing 514 pieces and costing £44.99, $49.99 or €49.99. Notably, a space dog is included, joining the space cat from 42605 Mars Space Base and Rocket!

This set is already available for pre-order on LEGO.com and will contribute to qualifying for current gifts-with-purchase.

More images are available after the break...

What do you think of the rover and the Friends space range in general? Let us know in the comments.

By in United States,

Kinda doubt I'll get it. But, it's adorable. Fold-down beds are spectacular.

Those aliens are so cute, it makes you wonder if they could suddenly expand into gaping maws of teeth. That would be a fun MOD.

Space Dog!

I'm hyped, but the release date is sus.

By in Germany,

Looks great, 50€ is a bit much for what you get, I mean.. look at 60431

This and 42605 should fit perfectly together.

Very nice, but Sweet Mayhem may need to rover-jack these two...

Space Dog! +1

By in Sweden,

Interesting color scheme, unique design, reasonable price - what’s not to like?

Mini dolls. I’m no hater by any means but knowing there’s much more flexible and versatile options - like minifigures, it makes me question why it wouldn’t be a good idea to make the switch one day.

They can be equipped with more accessories and still have different skin tones. I’m sure despite bright colors, the theme would be so much more appealing… maybe more so than City then.

Instant love. It's adorable. The aesthetics and play features of all the Friends space set have been excellent, make more.

By in Germany,

A big part of why Friends seems to be so disliked in addition to the color mess and the minidolls was how primitive the builds mostly were in the past. And this set only has one of the three.
The build seems to be really nice and even the colors are kinda sensible.

By in Germany,

Looks nice for what it is. If it had proper space minifigs I might get it - at a decent discount. As it is I'll pass.
Too many unbuilt sets waiting to be completed anyway.

By in United States,

Deliciously colorful, cutely designed, yeah, this thing is great.

I wonder if employees can switch out their gift for this…

Edit: ...or anything...

The wheels alone use at least 68 pieces, so there you go. Luckily, we have Amazon.

Blue aliens? Changing it up a bit, are we?

I will say though that the wheels look comically large on this

Well, I've heard on good authority that minidolls are to replace minifigures in City next year, and in the 2026 Modular!

By in Netherlands,

Looks amazing, and will fit well with 42605 : Mars Space Base and Rocket and even 70828 : Pop-Up Party Bus

Also nice that it continues the system of interchangeable/expandable modules, just in a slightly different way here, but it does still have the airlock piece too.

Side build is quite substantial as well , with awesome pieces.

Especially in the US a much better deal compared to 60432 : Command Rover and Crane Loader which costs $85 there ( €70 in Europe)

By in United States,

This set looks amazing! A great-looking rover, a new type of alien, and a SPACE PUPPY!

William from this set is returning from 41713.

I wonder if this new color of alien will also appear in any City space sets?

By in Netherlands,

I didn't expect them to expand the Friends Space sub-theme already. What gives? Why not just reveal it with the previous set in the theme?

By in United States,

Life on mars vibes.

By in Taiwan,

That space dog......

Looks like a pretty cool set, though price seems a bit steep for what you get.

By in United States,

Love it! Curious if/how the paralell universes of City and Friends are going to merge. These aliens are different yet clearly related to the green ones of City. Lego Multiverse crossover events in 2025?

Dear LEGO Friends Designers, please make a Space Goat next! :)
Those fern elements are not trans dark blue, but satin trans-dark blue...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Just me? At first glance, the wheels look like big eyeballs...

Gravatar
By in Croatia,

I can't believe that the features on this one actually look better than on the big City Rover...

The fact that the entire cab section is detachable from the wheelbase piques my interest. I wonder what else can be placed there. Maybe there will be a way to link them into a land train?

I second the Lego space goat!

By in United States,

Man I just really love Lego Friends. Every new reveal is a treat.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Whoa, this looks great! Those big 7x7 wheel pieces are always a lot of fun, and they look especially great here in Reddish Orange. It's also really neat that this rover uses some of the same window/windscreen pieces as the Mars base but combined to form very different canopy shapes. It's good to see William from the Space Academy once again, not to mention the newly recolored aliens and space dog!

It does surprise me a bit that the setting for this model is "an uncharted planet", unlike 42605 which was set on Mars — suggesting that the two sets portray entirely different space missions! Of course, this set can still easily be used together with that one for a Mars mission simply by setting aside the little alien landscape vignette.

The new Medium Azur aliens are a fun surprise, as are the big ferns in Tr. Blue Opal. And I love the space dog! I wonder what its name is? I guess we might not find out until the instruction manual is released, since like a lot of this year's sets, it doesn't list any names for the animal characters on the LEGO.com product page.

Since the chassis has a robotic "face", I'm guessing the idea is that when you separate the chassis from the cab, the former can function as an autonomous rover while the latter functions as some kind of landing craft. A lifestyle video on the LEGO.com page for this set adds credence to this, since it shows a girl swooshing the cab around on its own before connecting it with the chassis.

Also, the cab itself separates into separate lab and cockpit modules using the space airlock system, so both can be combined freely with modules from this year's other City/Friends/Technic space sets.

LEGO would never do that, as they would alienate a lot of their fanbase. It would be corporate suicide to change over fully...

I like to have both minidolls and minifigs. If I am building something centered around action (ninjago, adventure, sci-fi...) I go for minifigs. If I am building something more about people interactions (retrofuturistic city, space colony, fairy tales) I go for minidolls.
