Review 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81

Posted by ,

This year Technic is boldly going where the theme has never been before with a range of space sets that are not based upon real-life vehicles.

The 1,385-piece 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81 looks to be the most interesting of them, hopefully offering sturdy swooshability at a reasonable price.

Summary

42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81, 1,365 pieces.
£89.99 / $109.99 / €99.99 | 6.6p/8.1c/7.3c per piece.

A spectacular satisfyingly swooshable spaceship

  • Excellent value for money
  • Designed to be swooshed
  • Easily accessible controls
  • Stickers
  • Fewer reddish orange parts than I was anticipating

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

The completed model

The craft shares its new reddish-orange and white colour scheme with the space sets in the City theme, and it's certainly very striking. Unfortunately, it owes much of its aesthetic to stickers on nearly every panel, but it does look good with them applied. It would probably look OK without them as well, but not nearly as impressive and detailed.

'Heavy cargo' in the form of a container loaded with a surface rover accompanies the craft and contributes a lot to the set's playability.

There's an orange 'airlock' brick on the side furthest from the camera that enables it to be connected to City and Friends space sets.

The ship is surprisingly large, about 50cm long by 47cm wide. Being a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) craft, the engines at the tips of the wings rotate from vertical to horizontal, or any angle you fancy for that matter.

There's some decent greebling and detail on the bodywork, most of it in the form of Technic pieces.

The cockpit makes use of two 10x4x3 cockpit pieces that debuted in 2022, new here in transparent black. I will overlook the gap between them: interiors that are not airtight seem to be common on many LEGO spacecraft!

The cockpit assembly is loosely hinged at the top so as the craft banks to one side, its weight causes it to rotate in relation to the body to remain horizontal: a very nice feature!

The antenna at the front has a habit of twisting away from horizontal when handling the model, but otherwise it's very sturdy.

The wingtip engine cowlings are hinged allowing them to be opened to reveal some cool pipework and greebles inside. There are similar details inside the rear engines, but they can't be seen once they are built.

Overall, it's a well-designed and awesome looking craft which looks fit for its purpose as a heavy-lifter.

Operation

Spacecraft are meant to be swooshed around the room, right? This one is designed to make it easy and very satisfying to do so. The bar running front to back doubles as a handle and the controls to operate the ship's functions are positioned right under your fingers.

Turning the black gears raises and lowers the landing gear, and the blue ones rotate the engines.

The undercarriage does not quite raise right into the fuselage, but nearly so. The white mechanism in the middle is used for lifting the cargo container, which is raised and lowered using the red lever between the blue gears above.

Two 'toilet roll' panels are used as hooks to engage with the bars on the container.

The lifting gear can be raised to pull the container close to the ship's underside, but not inside it. The landing struts are not long enough to enable the ship to land with the container underneath, so it needs to be unloaded first.

Construction

Other than applying over 50 stickers, the set offers an enjoyable building experience. Not too complicated, or long-winded, but satisfying nonetheless.

The chassis utilises four of the new triangular frames that were new last year.

Verdict

This is a spectacular and well-designed model. Its functions work flawlessly, so it is a lot of fun to play with. It's designed to be swooshed around the room with one hand, and it's very satisfying doing so.

The introduction of Technic pieces in the new reddish-orange colour is very welcome, but despite it appearing to be the dominant colour of the model, there are only 7 different elements in that colour, 31 pieces in total.

It is at this stage of the verdict that I mention the price and usually complain about how high it is, but I won't be doing so in this one. In fact, I was surprised at how low it is for such a hefty model. Priced at just $109.99 / £89.99/ €99.99, it's something of a bargain, and it's not often that we can use that word in our reviews!

It's now available at LEGO.com and, just for a change, you do not need to wait for a discount at Amazon before buying it.

This looks to be an amazing set! Great review!

This set is awesome. It's cool to see Technic doing something different for a change.

By in United States,

When I was young, I used to hold ships from the bottom to fly around the house. I guess I was doing it wrong!

By in United States,

Not the Osprey we wanted, but the Osprey we deserve. (I mean they are both fixed-wing VTOL aircraft, right?)

By in United States,

That's where Huw was - halfway across the galaxy on planet Technic, test flying their very first spaceship. Glad to have you back, Huw.

By in Germany,

The city line could need one of those, similar to 7692 maybe ;)

By in Netherlands,

Cool model, decent price. Only those stickers....this feels like another model where the designers seemed to think every single panel needed to be covered in a sticker. Honestly, I feel most seem very much optional, I'd love to see the thing without any stickers but have a feeling it would look just as nice.

By in United Kingdom,

The style & colours remind me a bit of Mars Mission.

By in United States,

The only Technic sets I’ve bought are the Batmobile and Batcycle, but the space sets look incredible! I’m really impressed with how unique and well-designed they are across every theme.

By in Netherlands,

I like it. It's something unique, finally!

By in Australia,

This was my first March release purchase. Looks very cool. Got it for AU$110 which was a great price.

Does anyone who's ever used that cockpit piece in-person have an educated guess as to whether the cockpit of this could fit a minifigure inside it?

Warm up for a Thunderbirds set….?

Someone outside the UK knows what Thunderbirds is? But now you mention it, this is quite a Gerry Anderson sort of craft...

Either way, we need more futuristic Technic sets again!

I'd say Thunderbirds is pretty well known all over Europe, and also quite a bit beyond. I mean, look what I found last your in a (pretty bizarre museum in Japan: https://maps.app.goo.gl/SFXvK1F1VsxC7Lqd7

Not to spoil the global reach of Thunderbirds, but I’m from the UK…just on holiday in Costa Rica!

U dont have to put the stickers on. Thats whats good about them if you want it to be more detailed you can put them on, and if you cant handle them then just leave them.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Its not based off a real spaceship so leaving them off does not destroy the accuracy of the model or anything.

By in Spain,

Where's the people saying that wheelchairs don't work in space?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Around 1978, Lego introduced 'Space' but also 'Technic'. I was a big fan of both. I used to create Technic spaceships (multi-colours) and hook them up on the clothesline and operate them from a distance with a fishing line to drop missiles/bomb on unsuspecting distant cities.

I 'read' the building instructions of this set as soon as they were available online. I am so getting this set (42181) and also the smaller one (42178). Finally, a decent looking Technic spacecraft!

I guess we will get the review of 42179 very soon- the building process does not seem spectacular but we'll see how the final model 'behave' (it is apparently quite accurate).

By in France,

How does this scale with a minifig?

Its a quite nice looking set, and the wooosh factor is off the charts. I used to do that with the collector tie factor, but this one beats that.

However, this set is begging for some modding with system parts for extra detail and a crew.

Yeah, for that reason alone I'd say these are much less egregious than, say, with the BMW M1000 or the flex-Ferrari, that both really relied on the stickers and would look pretty terrible without. That doesn't seem the case here.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Thanks for the review.

It's a great set, but as others have mentioned, it would be cool to have a minifigure seating option.

After reading and watching the reviews of the Ornithopter 10327 I was hoping this set would have that option too.

This model looks amazing, this year Technic line finally have something unique and exciting apart from the usual cars and construction vehicles. And that price is just sweet !

It really looks like dropship from Aliens. Terrific design overall. I will get it when I can.

It is, but aren't these connectors supposed to be airlocks? If so then why have a connection that let's your astronaut walk right into the wall of a cargo container?

Ah but there's a door on the container, represented by a sticker :)

Ah, that would explain it. I never apply stickers. I'd rather walk into a wall ;-)

Hey now, don't be unnecessarily reductive. Technic also has licensed helicopters and motorcycles, too!

They may well fit on the seats but would fall off too easily for it to be fun to do so.

At step 327 and 328: discard the parts 4206482/43093 and instead use parts 6015356/11214. Then, after step 332 add two parts 28809 on the protruding pins. You can then attach one foot of the minifig in the cockpit and it won't slip all over the place.

By in United Kingdom,

Oh for a Thunderbirds set...we can but dream. Given excellent Thunderbirds proposals have been rejected on LEGO Ideas twice, I don't hold out too much hope though.

As for this set, I applaud LEGO Technic for returning to sci-fi/fictional subjects for sets - reminds me of sets from c.1998 - 2002, like 8450 or 8305. I won't be picking this up but a refreshing change.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

So no one is going to mention the eyes on the cargo claw...? Such an odd detail I spotted while building.

Oh for a thunderbirds set indeed..

If there had been basically any green technic in my childhood Thunderbird 2 would have been the go-to MOC material. As it was, I had to settle for Thunderbird 4 as most of my technic then was yellow, but still..

Thanks for the review! Having seen one in the brick now it is indeed much bigger than you'd expect, and the functions look great. It's also surprisingly reasonably priced. See what we can have when we're not paying licensing fees! Ultimately I'm not sure if I'll get it; it's not at the top of my list, but it's definitely a maybe!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There seems to be loads of empty space at the back so the first thing I would do is redesign it so that the container goes fully within the hold in homage to Thunderbird 2, and so that the craft can actually land with the container.
