Space-themed LEGO Insiders reward contest winners!

Posted by ,

LEGO has today announced the two winners of an Ideas contest to build space-themed models that will become gift-with-purchase sets.

The winners are Base: Micro Rail Command Centre by Falkorich and Vehicle: Moon Car by EnchantingNoodle. Both will undergo the usual design revisions and they will be released as gifts-with-purchase, presumably later this year or early in 2025.

You can also view the runners-up on the LEGO Ideas blog.

Update: It has now been confirmed that these will in fact be LEGO Insiders rewards, rather than gifts-with-purchase.

The Moon Car looks great!

I can see the nostalgic appeal of the Micro Rail Command, but between the two, I prefer the new set.

I have very little interest in Space theme, but these are both so amazing. I even spent the required amount last month to get the mini space builds GWP. Maybe it's because i grew up in the Eighties when the original space theme was out, but i was not allowed any of it... My Mum thought it was a boys toy!

By in Germany,

At first i am a Lego space dude but why it has to be classic space again!? The vehicle looks alright, still not my cup of tea.
I realy was hoping after a blacktron gwp would something like m-tron or space police set will be next. It was that classic micro build and now again!? A Monorailish microbuild. Boring! They should bring back the real thing if you ask me!

Congrats to the winners anyway!

By in Sweden,

Question: will the monorail threshold be less than buying an original monorail?

I do appreciate the monorail has references to CS, Mtron, and Spyrius.

My mom thought they were rich boys' toys!

I want it too. We did have some of the small sets.

Soooo, that's what Han's speeder looked like before he boosted and 'antiqued' it?

The Rail Command seems as though it might be at approximately the same scale as the recent GWP. That could be interesting!

By in Netherlands,

These look nice!

I'm interested in both.

About time for another Luke's Landspeeder.

Liking the Moon Car. Definite vibes of Gerry Anderson's Supercar. Mike Mercury returns!

Many of these parts are oop, therefore, the revised version will be unrecognisable. On the other hand, the space car will suffer the same fate. Still like it better.

Definitely like the micro rail command centre. Hoping at some point that we will get minifig scale space sets again like 10497 and 40580.

Gravatar
By in United States,

What I want is for Micro Rail to get "revised" into Futuron, but I'm not holding my breath.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Love the monorail. It could probably live on a top of one of the Ninjago cities quite nicely.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Both are fun retro in different ways. I like them both hopefully neither will be hugely expensive to get.

Gravatar
By in United States,

OOoh, love that Moon Car design. The base will raise the spending threshold, but can't see a way of taking this out of context.

Yeah, I do wonder what they'll do. Stickers? Still not bad for some folks who might use them in other ways.

Plus the yellow train logo is a nice touch.

"space-themed models"
Huzzah!!

"that will become gift-with-purchase sets"
Oh.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@dimc Its not just the prints, but also the finger-hinged pieces on each of the carts. They have to be replaced with contemporary parts or complex build-arounds that WILL destort the look. The station wil fare better, though. Still, I'm not a fan of the Space Babies theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why can't they just sell these direct-to-consumer?! Sigh...

Would it be too much to hope for another couple of recolours of the space babies?

By in Brazil,

Man, I love the Space theme. Like, a lot. I have most of the Classic Space sets. But I get kinda annoyed of how only the 1978-79 era of the Classic Space theme is acknowledged. I see that mini monorail is clearly a tribute to the Futuron one, but here's the thing: Futron does not use the blue-gray-trans-yellow scheme. Not even CS used exclusively this color scheme. It is a little annoying, but well, that's just me being picky about being timeline accurate and wanting Lego to remember Space lasted way beyond 1979.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That moon car is sweet. Hopefully the final design remains similar.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

In my dreams, LEGO uses some of their recently-announced ginourmous profits to say, "to hell with the cost, let's just bring back monorail".

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The Moon Car reminds me of 75209

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm liking the moon car. Reminiscent of Solo

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The car reminds me of Han Solo’s Landspeeder, albeit a sleeker and cleaner version of it. I’ll be keeping an eye out for it in the months ahead.

Oh good point, I almost exclusively build from the finger era, so yeah, it'll be different. Hmmm.

I don't do much with the spacebabies, but I'm glad this exists for people who like it!

Love the mini monorail.
Great stuff Falkorich!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe we'll get a Red baby spaceman with the micro set? Not a fan of the mixed color scheme, though. I do love the old blue/trans-yellow theme, but might make sense to push the set into a Futuron color scheme. But then Red CS wouldn't be a fit--but really I'll love it no matter what. The Year of Space continues!

Moon Car render did not like those bubble helmets…

Plus, the cost argument is total BS anyway.
LEGO makes so many complex new moulds every year, some of which only get used just for one set (or very few), monorail pieces shouldn't be a problem. I was lucky to find 6990 a while ago for a great price on ebay, and having built it I don't see what the problem of designing new versions of those track pieces should be. They are not overly complex pieces at all.

I think Falkorich just chose decorated pieces in Stud.io. I also see 2x2 round and 1x4 tiles from Star Wars and Town/City respectively.

@CapnRex101 The article information is incorrect. These are NOT GWP. These are Insider rewards sets using insider points. The Lego Ideas blog you link to also says so. Everyone now thinks these are GWP. They are not. Please ammend

In a way, they are. These are not GWP. These are going to be insider rewards. You use your points to get them, not purchases. I know it’s not the same as an actual box on store shelves. But this is closer to that than gwp

Still waiting for the opportunity to get the previous space gwp

Surely the Classic Space mini monorail will be turned into a Space Baby-sized set a la the recent one.

The LEGO Ideas blog post published today originally stated that the sets would be gifts-with-purchase, although I did find that odd because the earlier contest announcement alluded to Insiders rewards.

Anyway, the article has been updated.

OK wait, that wasn't there when I first commented. That's nice, but I'll definitely not have enough.

By in United States,

Okay, I am definitely going to at least try for that monorail; it'll go well with my 40712. Retro sci-fi buff that I am, I also really want the moon car. Time to start scanning instruction manual QR codes; I've only done a few of mine so far.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Congratulations to the 2 winners. I love both of these! So glad that I didn't spend my points on the 40703 Mini Ninjago City set.

By in Australia,

Darn so close, I voted for the portal research (like the sense of humour) and the Vehicle Moon Car. Very happy the latter won.

Congrats to the portal research for getting runner up.

It's already baby-scaled. There's a baby in the cockpit."

That explains the lack of dingos in this set.

An excellent point. It's not totally outside the realms of possibility, even with all the elektricky bits needed. We can dream...

" I was lucky to find 6990 a while ago for a great price on ebay (...) "
Nice! Enjoy it. Everyone should have at least some monorail; it's the most 3D of LEGO's train systems and very unique.

Gravatar

@bananaworld:
I’d call it tied with coaster track. Both have ramps, curves, and straights. Monorail has points, while coaster now has loops.

Gravatar
By in United States,

So instead of being a GWP, which at the very least you can obtain through a large purchase, it will require points that you can only obtain through... large purchases?

This just seems like an even worse situation as, unless we know how many points it'll require, and I'm guessing it'll be several thousand, we really don't know how much of a pain this will really be.

But if it's on the order of 2-3,000 points that means rather than a $200 GWP, you're looking at $400+!

The only reasonable outcome I can imagine is if it simply requires a nominal amount of points to purchase the set for money, as a way to ward off scalpers/bots, but I don't foresee that being the case.

Cmon Lego, just let us buy the darned thing.
Is that really too much to ask for?
