Ideas results announced!
Posted by Huw,
It's all happening today -- in addition to all the new set reveals, LEGO has also just announced the results of the second LEGO Ideas 2023 review!
Two ideas from the 49 contenders have been selected, and a third one is still being considered. View the winning models after the break.
Minifigure prize machine by Rob Vangansewinkel (aka Goosestore)
River steamboat by Aaron Hall (aka CTDpower)
Additionally, Pixar Luxo Jr lamp by T0BY1KENOBI25150 is still being considered.
Find out more on the LEGO Ideas blog.

Finally! LEGO Ideas results that don't suck! Except I do still think Ashnflash's Shrek Swamp deserved a spot here.
And... wait, Mister Rogers and Jumanji didn't pass? Never mind, I hate this now. Though the gumball machine looks nice.
I'm excited for that steamboat.
FINALLY A GREAT IDEAS SET!!!
great sets approved. Also happy that the x5 Taylor Swift sets got rejected. I kind of wish people would stop submitting things that only appeal to a very niche market of people.
While the boat is very nice (let's see what Lego will make of it) and the Pixar lamp would be a fun desk novelty item, I am glad that nothing is of interest to me here. Have you seen the new city sets? Looks like a big chunk of my money will go there - plus certainly 2 Technic sets. And we are only in May. Maybe I should start looking for a second job...

Thinking Taylor Swift is niche?
That's pretty niche.
As always, disappointed that a Video Arcade wasn't selected, but really excited for the Steamboat. Looks like it has the potential to be a really interesting build, as well as a great display piece.
Toot! Toot!
Here comes the steamboat! I can't wait for that one!
...although I'm bit sad Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated (you know you just sang the jingle reading that!) the Krusty Krab, and Mister Rogers Neighborhood all fell by the wayside.
BUT HEY! We're finally getting a rear-wheeler to go with the side-wheeler riverboat from Steamboat Mickey! All we need now is a towboat, and a keelboat to complete the histroy of river travel, from 1810s to modern day. (make it two keelboats and maybe they can have a race like in this old Disney flick: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davy_Crockett_and_the_River_Pirates )
I like the 'Minifigure Prize Machine'.
I would have liked to see the 'Train Bookends' get approved as well.
Lego ideas? More like Lego Idiots once more. :/
So many good ideas, and they choose GATCHA MACHINE
Phineas and Ferb is still VERY Popular with kids and they once again threw away this theme.
Trojan Horse would really work with their 18+ branding
Marine Life - I really had huge hopes for that one.
Would have LOVED to see an official GBC set, but I always knew it was a long shot. I think this is a pretty good pull from this set of candidates though.
Given that there aren't Taylor Swift Funko Pop figures - which would seem an obvious market - I suspect that obtaining rights for her is very difficult - if not impossible.
This, of course, will also cover many of the licensed themes that get rejected but not stop people on here blaming Lego.
Glad the PIXAR lamp isn't fully out the running, hopefully it can finish the job and pull through
But why were there FOUR "Taylor Swift's Lovers House" ideas for review, that (at a glance) look the same? Even if Swifties are fanatical, surely LEGO could've nipped that one in the bud by the second 10k submission of the exact same thing.
they finally listened with the luxo lamp
Wait....did actually one of my favorites get picked? Still think that Minifig gumball machine is a pretty brilliant idea, and kinda exactly what Ideas should be all about: Unusual things Lego likely would never come up with themselves.
And that riverboat is pretty good too, though I don't see myself buying that (and I kinda fear Lego is gonna scale/dumb it down quite a bit). And that Luxo Jr Lamp, sure, iconic thing done well.
Sure, would have loved to see some of the other sets (particulary the Train Bookends, the Big Boy, and the Landscape Photographer), but you can't have it all. Good picks and a kinda glad some others got rejected...
I think that Prize Machine will make a good start on a The Claw! Machine.
Excellent, I voted for the gumball machine!
And the paddle steamer is great too... it's been a few years since I went on the Southern Comfort on the Norfolk Broads.
Now this is what I’m talking about!
Its pretty disapointing that they chose the prize machine, one can only assume they think it'll be really big in Japan.
The other 2 are fine though its crushing to see a Red Dwarf set and 2 Muppet sets get through and none of them be picked up.

Maybe BTS burned them that badly.
Would have cried if the taylor swift set had made it
If they put exclusive minifigs (a classic space man in teal or sand blue or lime or magenta would do!!) in the prize machine, that may work! Other suggestions welcome.
Still no Shrek set? Booo!

Excited for that generic steamboat; a unique premise never done before with no license and not a buildable object.

I don't think they meant that; just because someone likes Taylor Swift it doesn't mean they would buy a Taylor Swift Lego set
Ahh... Taylor Swift didn't make it.
Ahh... Taylor Swift didn't make it.
Ahh... Taylor Swift didn't make it.
Ahh... Taylor Swift didn't make it.
Ahh... Taylor Swift didn't make it.
(I honestly couldn't care less about ms Swift)
At least there's still hope for Luxo, easily the standout project in this round.
These are neat! Not that I remember any of these submissions from back whenever the review period started. But hey, by the time these will actually go on sale I will have forgotten them yet again :)
Love the steamboat, but I fear the final result will be changed quite dramatically, and not for the better (imho), going by past experience.

Taylor Swift isn't niche, but the overlap with AFOLs and Taylor Swift is very niche.
Apparently, Lego has run out of good Ideas. Nothing here is remotely interesting.
Gumball machine looks a little gimmick, but it certainly has potential. The Steamboat is one of those beautiful sets that I'll never buy. No thoughts on Luxo Jr.
Bit disappointing to see Asterix and Shrek be rejected though. I *might* have also brought a Lover House if that got through, but I'm honestly growing a little tired of Taylor Swift?
Good that random licenced themes didn't get through, although Pixar's and Angelpoise's Luxo is in review (which means that it will fail review and then mysteriously appear as an "original" Icons set later).

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I need to build some bookends one of these days. The idea is so good, and if you made the base right, you could easily have modular scenes to swap in and out. I can see rebrickable hosting a lot of those for various book series. Even Lego could get in on some, plenty of SW or LOTR dioramas they could do, in addition to pirates/imperials, castle factions, space explorers/aliens, etc.
Steamboat is awesome. If only it'll include a Boy George minifigure...

I'd rather prefer if a Mark Twain figure was included, because it fits the era better than a 1980's musician. (apologies to Boy George)

Of course the typical German AFOL who thinks that LEGO should only be making drab-looking MOCs thinks that LEGO ruins all Ideas that make it through the review process.
Just to annoy you I wish that LEGO makes this the most colourful, toy-like, awesome boat. Give it rainboat colours, and make it as colourful on the inside as possible. With many a blue pin and stickers. Many, many, many, many, many stickers.
Now that would be awesome.
As it stands, I have zero interest in the boat, because I do not think that LEGO should be making boring things that look like.... other boring things.
The Minifig Gumball machine shows a lot of promise. Now this is a fun, whimsical thing I can fully get behind.
Meh, not for me.
Very intrigued by just what kind of minifigure designs will end up in the prize machine.

Am I a joke to you? Anyway, there's been 5 AFOLs in this review alone (+1 project in previous review or two, and +1 in the next), who managed to get 10 thousand votes for their projects based on her art - well, can't think of ANY other musical artist, whose fans get their tribute projects to the review stage in such numbers. And that's only those fans, whose projects got to 10k club, there's been more on "getting support" stage.
So I wouldn't call AFOL-Swifties a niche. :) We were a possible market.
I think the projects being rejected got more to do with her own narrative, than TLG and Ideas. Too late for that house - it got burned on the Eras Tour. Well, the hope dies last.

Mr. Rogers in particular strikes me as a likely candidate for "the IP holder is extremely strict about licensing."
I hope that the pixar lamp gets modified to include springs to give it full motion
I really hope the Luxo Jr. Lamp gets approved!

I think everyone is severely underestimating the dedication swifties have, it would have been the best selling set Lego ever made.
Lets be clear Taylors camp almost guaranteed said no, not the other way around.

It's quite simple. LEGO will make this into a set the way they see fit. If I like the result I will buy it (because I don't find Mississippi paddle steamers boring at all). If I don't like the result I can still buy the one BlueBrixx has been selling for years.
Also, why would you call this Ideas proposal drab-looking? It's got plenty of colours and looks quite realistic. Not every LEGO set has to be a playset (and many nowadays aren't), especially with adult-oriented lines like Ideas.
But suit yourself, LEGO has offerings for everyone.

Well, for starters, as per link,
1) a new Classic Spaceman colour
2) a new Castle faction emblem
To be voted on.
(Cue the "How dare Lego force me to buy a Gumball Machine just to get a new spaceman colour" moaners!)
Thanks to all the haters, I want a Taylor Swift set even more now! Let's make it happen!
Otherwise, I don't plan on getting any of these approved sets. I'm glad others enjoy them.

Obviously Mark Twain would be more period-appropriate, and a wonderful minifigure to have, but if you've ever seen the music video to Culture Club's 1983 smash hit Karma Chameleon you'd get the reference.

The same was said about the BTS set. And honestly, as lacklustre as that set was, it wouldn't have surprised me one bit.
But the fact it's been on shelves with 40% discount right from the get-go tells me otherwise.
If they want to apeal to non-Lego fans, just make some small, cheap minifig set. All of these Taylor Swift sets look like €200-300 sets....even for dedicated fans that's a lot of money they probably rather spend on concert tickets or the usual merch.

You mean, the BB set that comes in a tan box, without instructions or building steps, and is full of scratched up parts, missing bricks or faulty molds? Sure, it will be less expensive, and it will look quite boring with the odd questionable building technique here and there. I would love buying that from a company that doesn't care about protecting people's designer rights and where you have to wait 4 to 6 weeks if a brick is missing from your set, which will happen guaranteed... multiple times... within the same set.
Oh, and I forgot that for you (and your circle of German AFOBs) any set with a wee bit of red, a sandgreen roof and two yellow flags, is almost too colourful. I call that boring as heck. And I hope the LEGO designers spice this thing up quite a bit.

I would question how many of those who voted actually own any Lego sets. It's well known that certain sets see campaigns on social media and would get Taylor Swift non-Lego fans to vote.

Yes this is true, BTS have a massive fan-base, but when asked to spend $100 on Lego they were less keen. These Taylor Swift sets look even bigger.
It was clear non-Lego BTS fans voted in the Lego Ideas, but that didn't translate into sales.
If the Pixar Luxo Jr lamp does not come with a sound brick for the squeak sound TLG shouldn't even bother.
My wallet is safe. Thank goodness.
Luxo is cute and the perfect subject matter set for an Ideas set. Not exactly for me, but I expect it'll do well. There was nothing I was too interested in this round, but these will all make fine sets. If Luxo is cheap enough I may pick that one up.
Minifigure Gacha machine looks pretty nice. It'll heavily depend on which minifigures are included for me to buy it, but I like the concept more than most things which get to the Ideas board or pass even. I expect it'll be upscaled for more stable engineered functionality, but hopefully it won't be too expensive.
I'll have to get the prize machine since they've said it will come with a NEW Classic Space color. (Also a new castle faction emblem, but whatever.)
I suspect the reason Luxo Jr needs further review is because they want to attempt to rebuild it better so that the lamp can actually bend in the middle. (It currently does not due to the "spring" pieces not being actual springs.) It's not obvious from the photos, but the lamp articulation is actually quite poor compared to an actual desk lamp of that style. If they can't fix it to make it more movable, I don't think they'll move forward.
I'm glad the "Minifigure Prize Machine" Got approved!
Thank god, some actual good choices for a change.

Where do people here get Lego’s in-depth sales figures? I wish I could speak with such knowledge and authority.
I originally didn't want to post anything but I just can't help myself, oh well.
Contrary to what AFOLs on this site thinks, the BTS Dynamite wasn't a flop. Nope. Quite the contrary actually, if you listen to what the LEGO group says, quite the contrary since it actually is in the top 10 of best-selling Ideas sets of all-time.
Probably would come as a surprise to a lot of you here but it's not really...

On the actual sets chosen, none that really interest me really, I do think they are good choices then, and the minifigure machine is kind of quirky.

The Sales and Deals page on Lego.com is a good place to start.
@MrBedhead: you're obviously stuck in the past, going by your comment about BB's products. Yes, one line of their sets still comes in neutral boxes with pdf instructions only (remind me, where do I get the printed instructions for the Bricklink designer program? Or for the last few years of Technic B-models, as long as there still even was such a thing).
But you can also have sets in colourful boxes, with printed instructions, fully licensed too, by their own designers. I know, hard to believe.

Yes, I know that, and all these sets in colourful boxes, fully licensed, are made by Xingbao, and they have what is probably one of the worst brick qualities in the industry today.
Also, just because they license some things, does not negate the fact that they just keep releasing unlicensed sets galore under the BB Specials line.
And finally, you might think that their most recent BB Pro fully licensed Snoopy sets are awesome, until you realise they are just rebranded Chinese sets made by Banbao. No matter how you spin it, you Germans really love your daily dose of Chinese knockoff crap.
I'm just scared steamboats price...

To be fair, I believe these numbers are only really valid for Korea. But, it is true that BTS is mainly popular in Korea and the USA, and it is true that the BTS set was incredibly popular in these countries at launch. Not sure if that continued after launch.
Anyway, I would not consider the typical Brickset demographic, full of slightly older, white males from European countries as a target demographic for this set. Thus, I consider their comments about this set as slightly irrelevant.
I love me some Taytay, and will see her live this summer. And I would definitely buy a Lover House, just to rave about it here and try to rile up some of the fans that think LEGO should remain stuck firmly in the 80s and 90s. Definitely would prefer that over a riverboat that is considered as slightly risque colourful because of the red rudder, the sandgreen roof and the yellow flags.

Someday, I'll be livin' in a big ole city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean? ;)

(source ; translation of the article on twitter here : https://twitter.com/shadow_twts/status/1782363707391029675

On the actual sets chosen, none that really interest me really, I do think they are good choices then, and the minifigure machine is kind of quirky."
Definitely would prefer that over a riverboat that is considered as slightly risque colourful because of the red rudder, the sandgreen roof and the yellow flags."
Could be it's only Korean numbers but I don't necessarily think so, considering the article specifically mentions selling out in North America. People tend to understimate how much BTS fans will buy but we tend to sell out a lot of stuff tbh, sometimes stuff I'm even surprised by.
(I could be wrong ofc)
Re - selling after launch, yeah, it might have petered out but honestly they released at pretty much the worst moment they could (not their fault though), what with members either leaving for the military or focusing on their solo work. There was pretty much only promotions from LEGO itself and none from the group/BHM so that would have definitely impacted long-term sales.
And I do know Brickset is a very very specific subset of AFOLs with their specific pre-conceived ideas and I usually don't say anything because it's not really worth it (as a Lego SW fan restraint is needed at all time ugh) but tbh sometimes I just have to say something, even it is not necessarily the smartest thing to do...
Not a fan of TSwift myself but she's definitely got selling power and you can't ignore that. And I think some people might be willing to buy the house not for TS but for the house if it was good enough, like it might happen with the Twilight House.
Lego sure does love their Gacha.

Thinking Taylor Swift is niche?
That's pretty niche."
Who's this Taylor Swift? "
Taylor?
All I can say is
"You maniacs. You blew it up."

Running back, Chicago Bears, Year 5

"Good that random licenced themes didn't get through, although Pixar's and Angelpoise's Luxo is in review (which means that it will fail review and then mysteriously appear as an "original" Icons set later)."
If they already had something in development, I think they’d just reject it. They’ve done it before. A few have been held back for a second, maybe third review, and ended up being approved in the end, and a few have ultimately been rejected. Licensed IP has a restriction of being not more than 50% of approved projects, so I could see a “maybe” project getting held over, only for the team to decide they just prefer other stuff more.
@r2_d2_96:
All that means is there could be 10k fans who will vote on anything with her name slapped on it, not that there are 50k fans only voting for their favorite version.
@WizardOfOss:
I mean, they have to repurchase her entire back-catalog of albums on CD+vinyl+digital, they have to get concert tickets, and tickets to the movie of the concert, and eventually buy the DVD+Blu-Ray+digital…
A $250 Lego set is a small investment for a swiftie.
Again lets not underestimate how much money fans are willing to spend.
Also in every single metric outside south Korea Taylor Swift is a bigger selling artist. She has sold far more worldwide than BTS.
Either way it’s unlikely to ever happen due to licensing imo.

TBH we do not have enough boats (big huge boats\, not city sets).... have seen car line?
I don't mind the steamboat, but it looks quite large; would like it smaller and brighter.
IDEAS is done for me, I don't think I've bought anything for at least three years. Maybe IDEAS needs to spin off TV and licensed sets into a theme, the copies of real objects could go into a theme, and all the big unlicensed modular and other unlicensed designs can go in the bricklink series. Then IDEAS can either fold, or reinvent itself into something novel again.
Not interested, now I just hope that there's not a minifigure for my collection in the gatcha machine. I won't by the whole set anyway
I adore that gumball machine! I'm mainly a minifigure collector, so I might even get some extra capsules and use it to store some guys I don't have displays for yet...

Excluding the GWPs, I have:
2019 -Central Perk, Dino Fossils
2020 - Pirates of BB, ISS, Sesame St, Ship in Bottle
2021 - Blacksmith, Seinfeld, Winnie
2022 - Globe, Van Gogh, Office, Lighthouse
2023 - Space Age, Cabin
2024 - N/A
Still considering and/or not yet:
2022 - Jazz
2023 - Insects, Orient Express, Vikings
2024 - Dungeons, Jaws
Ideas is still wonderful to me. :o)
I really feel for the SLS submission in there - imagine getting 10k votes on your model, having it go forward for selection, then seeing Lego launch* one before the Ideas review is even published. I know how this all works, but still, I’d be so disappointed…
(* pun intended)
I wonder if the hold up with the Pixar lamp has to do with the company that owns the original lamp design and hat Pixar copied.
lol not sure how a concept that gets 50,000 combined supports is niche… but what do I know
that being said, it’s got to be a rights issue
Nice sets, but not for me - most of the current crop don’t pique my interest, but that might change once I see the final product. I am possibly one of few who feels that several Ideas sets were improved by Lego - I would not have purchased the Insects set had it remained closer to the original.
Congrats to the winners and hope the folks that voted for them enjoy the sets down the track.
