By in United States,

Nice! Now we just gotta wait for the Jaws set.

Doesn't interest me, but it looks pretty cute! Kinda wish it had customizable fur colors like the original project though.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Well, personally, I kind of like Lego recreations of real-world "things," like the typewriter, the guitar, etc. But this cat does not do anything for me. It just looks very un-lifelike. Maybe I'm not a cat person...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Kitty! I love him

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

They should've done a product shot of an actual cat knocking it off the shelf. Realism!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not something I really care about, but really good size and pieces for the money.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Awesome spaceship!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hang on, what? I don't remember something like this getting through a review... I guess all these Ideas reviews are starting to blend together lol

Gravatar
By in Australia,

There's gotta be some good easter eggs inside this one.

Please don't spoil them in the review!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll keep saying it: some things are better left as MOCs people build rather than sets people can buy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I dunno about this one, owning LEGO and owning a cat tend to be pretty orthogonal enterprises...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wish we'd have gotten the cat clock instead.

The good thing is: It's building bricks and you can modify a shark to have a so-called "LASER" on its head.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I don't like cats - which is exactly why I will get this one eventually.
Because every time our younger daughter pesters us to get a cat I can then say, we've already got one.

And when she says she wants a different one, I swap out the eyes and mouth and say, here you go.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think it’s ugly but it would be cool to have some sort of motion sensor that follows movement causing the head to swivel. Could cause some scares in guests.

Why? Just don't buy it if it doesn't appeal to you.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Does it come with a Schrödinger minifig as a GWP? Or does not?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Two thoughts:
1. I'm wondering if, like the Creator Tiger set, whether this will be anatomically correct.
2. A real cat would knock this off a shelf in five minutes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awwww, I love him. Such a simple yet ingenious building technique for his nose!

He even costs exactly how much I paid for my real cat 18 years ago!

If the LEGO cat is in the box, it's built and unbuilt at the same time.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Honestly, I completely forgot about this project. I'm a dog person anyway.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

very cute pink nose and tongue :3

Gravatar
By in United States,

Uh oh, there is an appreciable chance that my wife, a great lover of all things feline, will gift this to me for Christmas instead of say, the Viking Village :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I absolutely detest real cats, but rather like this one. Brick built is certainly the only sort that will ever cross my threshold!

Gravatar

sorry this is absolutely horrible. Original submission was much better

Then you’ll like the lego video for this set.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

This is awesome. Is it too late to get a pair of green eyes added to the set as well? I need them to make my cat!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is AMAZING! They captured a real-life animal in Lego exceptionally well. I have a cat that looks exactly like this, this set was made for me :)
AND $99.99 for 1,710 pcs YES PLEASE

Gravatar

This looks just like one of my cats. I may get this if it goes on sale

Gravatar
By in United States,

As the owner of a tuxedo cat, I have to say this looks pretty great ... EXCEPT for the lack of whiskers. What a weird omission. My tuxedo cat has long white whiskers, and this model just looks very strange without whiskers.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Capturing real life... anything, but mostly animals is really hard to do in Lego, (I've tried :P) but this is basically perfect.
Massive kudos to the designers

Why does everyone hate cats now?

Shouldn’t be too hard to add some whiskers. I’m thinking part 4604304 around the nose would work as a connection point for some bars or maybe flex tubes.

There you go. I was wondering what was off with it. That was it, no whiskers.

Still very nice and as much as I may have some interest in getting it for the novelty of it, it is so far down the wish list that I won't even bother putting it on said list.

Incidentally, adding a Schroedinger minifig to this set would have made it a must buy.

Gravatar

Wasnt that suppose to be a Siamese cat? Which i would have loved because my own cat is a Siamese.

I hope the other Color variation still will be made...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Seems like they changed quite a bit once again, but honestly, I think this time it's for the better. The original fan design looked rather specific, and dare I say a bit creepy?

That said, I think they should still have included the side builds that came with the Ideas submission. And couldn't they have created a moving jaw instead of offering two options?

But I'm most surprised by the price: €100 for over 1700 pieces, including several pretty big ones, that seems like a very decent deal. Makes you wonder why the Chess game is three-quarters the price while having far less than half the pieces, mostly small ones.

So seems like pretty good set. Which I have no interest in whatsoever. Now if they had made a calico cat looking like Tama-chan....

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wouldn't get this, but I have to say, the design is spot-on here.

Gravatar

I preferred the original colours, although it looks good, it would have been better if this had the movement Simba does.

This is weird to me. I love cats but this feels akin to having a taxidermied cat on display. I think I would've liked it a lot more if they'd made it more cartoony and less realistic.

"This LEGO Ideas model is created by a fan designer"

No, it is inspired by a fan design but completely redone by the Lego designers. Like I mentioned before I think they did a pretty good job here, but that doesn't change that there's very little left of the fan design.

"...and produced by the LEGO Group"

Oh wait, are there any Lego sets not produced by the Lego Group?

"a carefully curated collection"

Translation: "Throw it all against the wall and see what sticks."

"top-quality"

When did Lego start caring about quality?

"(each sold separately)"

No s***, Sherlock....though it would obviously be quite cool if this set would have included that entire carefully curated collection of top-quality sets. Now that would have been something worth mentioning....

I am fully aware it's all just marketing BS not to be taken seriously, but this really is the worst kind.

I'm not seeing any significant adjustments for some of these. It looks like the tip of the tail might be able to raise? Perhaps the paws swivel?

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

The absence of whiskers is disappointing and the shape / curve of the back doesn’t look right.

Also they could have included more eye colours plus spares for a black nose would be good.

(I had a tuxedo cat with green eyes and black nose.)

I can already see the cat lady collection coming to life in early 2025, followed by the dog groomer encyclopedia for 2026. I already replaced all flowers and plants with LEGO, threw my PC out for the typewriter and changed from digital to Polaroid. Next up will be the radio, toaster, fridge... the Ideas toilet was unfortunately rejected.

Indeed. You first need to get them stuffed though, which will probably set you back more than this one.

Unless you use your trusted back-alley stuffing service of course, the no-questions-asked / offer-you-can't-refuse kind of business... ;-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

did my post get deleted because I included a starred out swear word?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I... dunno. Lego cat as a concept is pretty cool, but something about this feels off. Maybe it's the fact that it has 0% attempt at fur texture, or the hind legs looking more like a blob than legs, or the lack of whiskers, but eh. It's okay. But not for me, especially since it's a tuxedo cat and not a grey cat, the best kind (yes I'm biased).

Gravatar
By in United States,

What is the side build? The white, pink, and brown structure? Does the cat have customizable ”parts”?

Edit: It’s an open mouth

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Poll needs an option for “Probably buy this but for someone else.” Can think of at least one person in my life who might enjoy this as a present

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Yeah, without the wiskers the head looks a bit odd, but otherwise, model is quite pleasent for my eyes. I think I'm gonna need two copies. One in original form and one for replacing the white parts with black ones 'cause I have two real cats with theese kind of color combinations. My tuxedo cat looks exatly the same, he has even the same white fur patch at the tip of his tail.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My late grandmother once had a cat like this over nearly fifteen years ago (~1999 to ~2010). He was named Cole, and I'm sad both of them aren't around to see a Lego model that looks like the spitting image of Cole.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I loved the "LEGO Cats" by Legotruman in the 2022 2nd review but that was rejected. Which made the announcement that The Yellow Brick's "Cat" in the very next review had been chosen very puzzling. After all, the actual "idea", a brick built cat, is identical, so why should the first be rejected? That favouritism aside, I had hoped LEGO would improve the actual design, and possibly offer multiple colour schemes. Instead we end up with this. I was expecting to buy this one but now it really isn't for me, and I'm very much a cat person.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

From the last six releases in the Ideas theme, I was very much looking forward to and intending to buy three of the: The Orient Express, Dungeons & Dragons, and the Cat. All three are so far removed from the original winning design, the one people voted for and wanted, that I've passed on them all. Now that is clearly just my view, but I don't recall seeing any comments from people saying they preferred the released D&D set to the original. I understand it was the Orient Express company themselves who dictated the model and colour be changed, but the reasons for the significant colour changes made to D&D and the Cat are unknown to me.

Yeah, everyone knows you can only play with Lego if there's minifigs and trap doors. Everything else needs to be glued together, and glued to the shelf. There's just no other option! No possible play at all!

I prefer the official D&D set to the original submission. It was a Day One purchase. I also bought the Orient Express on Day One but would have been just as happy with the original submission. I would presume so given that we (UK) don't generally use that term (which I believe originates from a location in NY) for the formal attire.

Plus you know how much TLG likes to use US English :-o

Absolutely. The word tuxedo is American English. We simply call it a diner jacket. I imagine it would just be called a black and white cat here, or possibly a Jellicle cat but I'm not sure how widespread that term is either.

This looks identical to one of our cats called Sooty; I would have to modify him to have a smart red collar to match but looks good to me. The obvious bonus is that he won't smell bad sometimes and won't attempt tear up the carpet but I think he would have to be displayed in a different room to our real cats though...

I had never previously heard this term.

I love this!
I have a tuxedo cat that looks just like this - though I’ve never heard the term “tuxedo” for a cat before: being Australian, she’s just a domestic short-hair cat (who happens to be black & white)!
Our Lilly is beautifully natured and loves people.

We have two cats, and they’ve NEVER knocked any of our LEGO sets (of which there are hundreds) on the floor!!
They used to walk amongst them occasionally (before they became outdoor cats), but they both carefully walked AROUND the LEGO!
I’m surprised to hear how much damage others’ cats do!….

Well, you did say that one of them was "beautifully natured."

"That fact that so many people’s initial reaction to this was to talk about how much they hate cats is really depressing to me. They’re such wonderful little fluff balls with so much personality… almost makes my wonder why I would get a plastic version…"

I don't hate cats but if I wanted one I'd have to go with plastic as I'm allergic to the real ones :/

I don't really like this one though, no cat for me yet

I absolutely love this! Despite the minor issues, I think this is a fantastic model and I can't wait to get my hands on it! Although I prefer Lego Ideas sets to be as close as possible to the original fan submissions, I personally prefer tuxdeo cats over Siamese cats.

Looking forward to putting this one together!

Hmm, I wonder how long until someone MOCs this into the Tower of Barad-Dur with the yellow eye in the middle?

I think you mean the tower of Barad-Purr.

Like Studless, I'm too allergic to cat dander to ever own a cat, but I find this sculpture a very attractive alternative (and one that won't pick fights with my dog). Intriguing how many people have said they preferred the original Siamese-colored version, but I think these colors are very accurate. Too bad about there not being a green-eyed version, but I do like the alternate mouth and changeable poses. Also, the price seems quite reasonable, or even rather generous. Goes on my list....

@sklamb I'm unfortunately also allergic to dogs, hamsters.... you name it. Dogs, the ones I love the most, is what I'm the most allergic to:\

There's some reptiles I like but I would have to feed them mamals (to which I'm allergic) and I can't afford a tank large enough to not feel like I'm imprisoning a fish so.. pet rock?

I do however have a lot of lego dogs haha

Any idea what the width and length are? I can find the height but no mention of the other two dimensions.

Even though you left this comment fairly early on not one person yet has Liked it. Good.
