And now, waiting for LEGO to release a UCS Nautilus!

Great little tribute set :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What is that trans light blue piece on the side of the Nautilus?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm a huge fan of the tribute sets like this.

As a bonus, they seem to be the only Lego Gifts with Purchase (GWPs) that Brickset commenters seem to like without getting weirdly angry about.

Someday I'd love to see GWPs like these cross into licensed theme territory, with a George Lucas tribute set and a JRR Tolkien tribute set, with minifigs of the creators next to microbuilds of the worlds they created.

My guess is it's the viewport.

I was going to say this, but you beat me to it.

By in United States,

Looks cool! But I still can't help but feel sour that the minifigure-scale Nautilus was rejected on LEGO Ideas.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Jules Verne books were my childhood! My gateway into the world of sci-fi :-) I'm definitely getting this, but perhaps from resellers as there's nothing big I'd want to buy at the moment.

Lego, next please do Karl May tribute. Another part of my childhood :-)

By in Netherlands,

Monsieur Verne could use a longer beard :)

Great little set though. I've just read Around the World in 80 days for the tenth time. Must have set.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was one of my favourite books when I was growing up.

And I've enjoyed many adaptions of Around the World in 80 days. Kind of wondering now if it inspired the Daft Punk song. Any other fans here of Around the World with Willy Fog?

A must have for me. Could become available for VIPs by the end of the week, but I guess that's not official (yet)?

By in United States,

I…have never heard of Five Weeks in a Balloon. I’ve heard of Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Mysterious Island, both of which have been adapted into big budget Hollywood films in the 21st century.

@BJNemeth:
If comments start getting weirdly angry, it’s your fault for jinxing it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Probably the nicest micro-scale train that they've ever done.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Pretty cool set! Though imagine how amazing it would have been had this been an actual popup book....

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Are those four quarter dome pieces which make up the balloon? I don't think I've ever noticed those before, I like them!

If you limit yourself just to the movies you're loosing a lot. You should dive into books, you're in for a treat! Not sure how widely available they are in the US, you can normally find them easily in various European languages. I had lots them when growing in Slovakia, with majority of them actually given to me by my dad who enjoyed them in his childhood :)

Five weeks in a Balloon, Mysterious Island, and 20,000 Leagues were all adapted in the mid-20th century by various studios and are very good. I've never seen a 80 Days adaptation from then, but I don't doubt it had been done back then. (You should really watch the 20,000 Leagues film from the mid-fifties by Disney. It's very good!)

Also adapted: In Search of the Castaways (also by Disney), and from the Earth to the Moon, the latter of which is a classic silent film!

I sure hope the threshold is no more than 100€, I'd love to gift such GWPs to someone who is not into LEGO but likes the source material

Gravatar
By in United States,

@myth:
I vaguely remember reading 80 Days when I was young and largely limited to various books that had ended up in my family’s hands through one means of another, but my tastes leaned in other directions.

@Murdoch17:
And I know I’ve both watched Disney’s 20,000 Leagues, and ridden the ride that was inspired by it. I’m less certain if I watched the Fraser/Johnson “duo”.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Conceptually, I love these tribute GWPs. I’m still kicking myself for missing the last one. That being said, I’m not sure how I feel about this one. I’ll probably get at least one, though, in order to prepare for LEGO cancelling @StyleCounselor ‘s order.

Finally a very nice looking GWP. Got a long list of purchases waiting, due to GWPs for the last 3 months being absolute dross!

A 'tribute' to Gerry Anderson next please Lego!

I think Mary Shelley should happen at some point. She is the mother of Sci-fi after all with her work 'Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus'

I thought the balloon was from 80 Days around the World with Jackie Chan starring.

Granted I haven't watched or read any of them so who knows.

There are so many 80 Days adaptations. By a chance we caught 1989 version on TV during the Christmas - with Pierce Brosman, Peter Ustinov, Christopher Lee...

By in France,

Disappointing. A rocket is missing, for those who have read De la Terre a la Lune.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I hope the period of availability for this isn't before 10338 releases, or I may get it on the secondary market. But there's no way I'm *not* getting this; I love "Tribute" sets and sci-fi too much to let this one pass me by.

@Murdoch17: A Mary Shelly tribute set would be awesome! Just don't build it during a thunderstorm...

Very kind.

I'm still on the case. Plan on making my fourth call to Lego CS today to see if they plan on telling me anything about their "investigation."

Ooh, good point! 20,000 Leagues covers water, 80 Days is land, 5 Weeks for air, and the rocket would round it out with space.

Or _do_ build it during a thunderstorm! How much trouble could a sentient, living minifig get into, after all?

Gravatar
By in United States,

A Mark Twain tribute next would be fantastic!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'd also love a Mary Shelley set, though I'd want it to come with a non-Universal minifigure adaptation of the Creature from the book as well.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Five weeks in a balloon. A story about shooting everything on African soil. Animals and human beings included. Not a nice story to read in this day and age.

Nice that they included George Lucas

As someone from the state where Mark Twain was born and raised, I concur!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Jules has apparently learned to harness flames with his hands. Perhaps he comes from Krull?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think there would be quite a few authors worthy of a GWP but I presume whomsoever is chosen would have to fit in with TLG's stance.

Those chosen thus far have been pretty uncontroversial so I presume they would follow that pattern and avoid controversy.

While that would be great, I doubt the Tolkien estate would allow LEGO to make a toy version of him.

I don't know...Galileo was always fighting with the Pope, Dickens empowered latchkey children, Amelia pretty much obliterated spousal navigation, Gustave ruined the Parisian skyline, and Jane was always just monkeying around.

I wish this included a reference to The Time Machine. Doc Brown would have loved it!

So *just* before 10338 comes out. Guess it'll be to Bricklink for me then, if those allegations are true.

@PDelahanty: The Time Machine was H.G. Wells., not Verne.

Is Willy Fog the name used in the translation of the novel to your language? In Spain that name was used for a character in a TV animation series from the 1980's. I really loved that when I was a child. They changed all the names, and actually introduced several major differences from the novel, but it was a great approach for children.

It is always a bit of problem to judge the past. The novel is in many senses a clear reflection of the ideas at that time, many of them unacceptable in today's terms. There are for sure a lot of novels from that time which suffer the same problems, but I think it is clear that we all have to keep this in mind when reading such books.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@Javi36
In the Netherlands they kept the name Philleas Fogg. At least in the translated book that I read.

I was also talking about the Spanish-Japanese animation series that you mentioned. We watched that in English on The Children's Channel. Good times!

I found out about the second series only a few years ago. I think I might finally watch it to celebrate this set being released.
