New magnets available in Insiders Rewards Centre

Posted by ,

The latest non-brick-based collectables available in the Insiders rewards centre are these three magnets, which can be acquired in exchange for 2,250 points each.

I am not usually a fan of such items, but the Lion Knights' shield, Classic Space logo, and wooden duck are very well-made and appealing, and will look great stuck on a fridge door.

They each come in a small cardboard box, well wrapped in tissue paper to avoid abrasion in transit.

It's not evident from the photos in the Rewards centre that they come with a stand and a steel sheet that matches their shape, which provides a way to display them should you not wish to attach them to your fridge or magnet board.

The 4mm-thick base is cast in the same metal that has been used for collectable coins and so on in the past, so it's fairly hefty. The 1mm steel sheet that forms the vertical part of the stand adds further heft to the assembled item.

The magnets themselves are 3mm thick and enamelled, so the colours are well-defined and bright. There are one or two minor scratches on mine, but you have to look closely to see them.

A piece of plastic magnet sheet inlaid in the back provides the piece with the necessary magnetism.

Overall, they seem to be better quality than similar items that have been offered in the past and, what with them depicting popular passion points from LEGO's history, I think they will be popular.

2,250 points is the equivalent to a discount of £14 / (~$18?) so they are fairly pricey, but if you collect things like this, and have points to spare, you will not be disappointed.

Head on over to the Insiders rewards centre to acquire them.

Goat and minifig for scale:

Thanks to LEGO for providing these items for this article. All opinions expressed are my own.

You gave us dimensions on the bases and such but can you give us the sizes of the magnets themselves? LEGO doesn't provide the size info .

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

It's hard to gauge from the pictures but how big are they? I couldn't find any dimensions listed anywhere of them.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I would call them out for price gouging, but it's become the norm with all things LEGO it seems, so I won't even bother.
Wouldn't waste my points on anything that isn't bricks anyway. Easy pass.

Good point --

Lion Kinghts' shield is 43mm wide by 50mm high
Classic Space logo 70mm wide
Duck 50mm tail to beak

Thanks for that!

GOAT

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I’d say they’re worth about £4 each, but having to do multiple orders to get 1 per order is always going to be the waste of money for things like these!

Brilliant!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Maybe a touch on the pricey side, but I couldn't resist the duck.

Lego needs to put the sizes on the rewards page. I think they are bigger than most people believe.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Like these but with the Ninjago City sets and the fact you can't add more than one to an order means I have to pick which ones I can get.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These are very cool but boy are they expensive.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think these look great, and the price is OK too. All 3 grabbed!

Let's get real. They're the price of 20 cigarettes or 3 pints of beer... and far healthier!

By in Netherlands,

At least the Royal Knights emblem has not been referenced for the umpteenth time this year alone.

I don't use Lego.com to purchase directly and I probably won't get these from the aftermarket, but for a non-lego reword they could have done much worse.

By the way, the Royal Knighs were a subtheme from the mid 90s which is not to be confused with the Lion Knights, which were from the 80s and featured an entire lion... or with King Leo's faction from Knights Kingdom I (2000) which features the same lion but a different blue background.

Edit: It turns out today's RMotD is a Lion Knight! So there you can see what I was rambling on about.

I see no attraction in magnets

Gravatar
By in United States,

If I weren't saving up my points for those two Space Ideas rewards, I'd be sorely tempted; the stand is an especially nice touch. And @Huw, I'm not impressed by you flexing your PG (Original Goat), I got 7189 too.

Basics the Lion Knights have an Or lion rampant upon a field azure while the Royal Knights have an Or lion’s head guardant upon a field per pale argent and gules, and Leo’s soldiers also have an Or lion’s head guardant but upon a saltire Or field azure.

Everybody got that? XD

All three for 2250 would be a lot more reasonable. $22 for a tiny magnet is a bad deal.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm in the minority here in the comments, but I absolutely love these. I even like them more than the mini-Ninjago City sets, which are also super cool.

Yes, it'll take some time to collect them all with the annoyance of one VIP/Insider Reward per Lego online purchase, but I'll take that over the aftermarket.

By in Canada,

Doubt it but are the magnets strong enough you could hide the steel backplate inside your shirt or other and attach the magnet on the outside?

Regardless, expensive but had to jump on the classic space logo. Hope they make more, classics like Blacktron or Octan, and modern ones like Vita Rush or the new-ish city exploration logo.

If it worked, that would be particularly fun to do with the Classic Space logo; pretend it was a Star Trek: The Next Generation-era communicator. "Away team to Galaxy Explorer..."

If only that was the case here too.

I’ve long believed heraldry’s arcane and obtuse language is designed that way solely to keep people from understanding it properly, so that feeling may be the point…

Yep... about £13 - £17 per packet. Not that it would bother me if they were £100 per packet! It just makes me thankful that I've never smoked and that my brick addiction is much cheaper!

Indeed.
But if cigarettes are THAT expensive in the UK, I wonder how smokers can even afford their vice any longer.

You could use rare earth magnets inside your shirt to attach the magnets on the outside.

Yes, absolutely. I have that print too, and all of the Logo keyrings. The colour bars and split 'O' were special to me as that was Lego before my 44 year break!

They're not 'for' anything. Perfect for decoration. Some like them, some don't. Absolutely fine either way.
Some seem to get angry about them though, and that's really weird!

Yes, more interesting key chains would be good, so long as there are still plenty to buy normally as order total topper uppers!

I think they ask for too much points, plus, it's still baffle me that you can't add more than one gift to the basket, you have to do 3 separate orders if you want all of them, which is bonkers and so stupid

I think they also need to increase the size of the pictures of the rewards. It's very hard to judge certain items without doing an online search first.

Who the heck needs stands for such tiny magnets? Not even all 3 together are worth paying 15€ for considering these all come from a sweatshop in China and cost a few Cents to produce. Instead of trying to rip off their most loyal Insiders customers with cheap tin souvenirs, TLG should find a proper incentive for people to actually want to buy something at full price from their buggy website.

By in United States,

I just opened the shipment I received last week, and took the Space logo out of the box. I'm a bit disappointed that the back piece sits so loosely in the base, and the planet looks more brown vs how gold it appears in these photos (hey, at least it's not pukey pink), but otherwise it turned out really nice. I don't have any particular interest in the shield, but I may consider picking up the duck at some point. First, however, I need to secure the two Ninjago sets I got codes for.

I got mine yesterday and I was also disappointed on how loose it sits in the stand. And compared to the duck (at least in the pictures) the yellow doesn't feel nearly as vibrant as it could have been.

By in Canada,

The Tiago Catarino review answered my question: the magnets are not strong enough to hold through clothing.

He also pointed out that the color of the classic space logo is accurate to what it looks like on the classic space minifigures (closer to muted gold than vibrant yellow).
